Children of Huang Shi
I was very impressed with this DVD since I hadn't heard much about it. Johnathan Rhys-Meyers really showed his acting talent with his character. I also like movies based on actual events.

Brilliant movie
The Children of the Silk Road (Huang Shi) is an absolutely brilliant movie. I like movies that are based on fact. The scenery is excellent visually and the characters are well played.

Buy it. Watch it every year.
This is a very special film. It belongs in the category of great films that include, "Empire of the Sun", "Saving Private Ryan", and "Band of Brothers". Along with the growing collection of films detailing the lives of people who seemingly lose control of their life and then find the greatest rewards that life can give. This story is powerful and meaningful. Based on the true life experience of an amazing man. I recommend that you buy this film and watch it every year. China's civil war and humanity
I was attracted to see this movie because it is set in late 1930s in China. I personally knew very little about the internal civil war that was going on there between the imperial army and emerging communist force. It finally helepd me understand how Japanese had audacity to invade that country many times their size and keep it occupied throughtout the World War II.
Main chracter of the movie is a young British reporter George Hogg, an Oxford educated journalist. His job took him initially to US, then Japan and finally to China. Seeking to report in Europe what is truly happening in the far east, he finds his way to Shanghai in desire to reach Nanjing where Japanese occupying army is killing civilians. However, fate has other plans in store for George.
George ends up in a countryside in an orphanage full of boys of all ages who know only of starvation and horrific loss of their families. Slowly, George accepts his role of becoming their surrogate father, teacher and caretaker, until it becomes obcvious that Japanese army is closing in and Chinese army wishes to use boys for their own purposes as soldiers.
For fans who saw Michelle Yeoh in her former films, there is a surprise. This agile, martial arts actress has transformed herself in a dignified, beautiful local merchant full of grace, quiet determination and wisdom. Her presence in this film is absolutely stunning.

A Classic in Modern Filmaking
I saw this movie years ago and never forgot it. I was delighted to find it on DVD. The DVD is clear, the stereo sound track excellent. The movie itself? Timeless and awe inspiring. This is a "thinking person's" movie and tells us a lot about ourselves. The music by Philip Glass is just wonderful. 5 STARS!

unforgettable images from a past that is still present, notes for a future to be avoided, great soundtrack

A Unique Experience
I've had the VCR tape of this movie for many years and finally had to toss it and replace it with the DVD. Koyaanisqatsi is a unique and mystical journey for mythological man. It bogs down in a couple of places, but what DVD does not? The story is exciting and depressing, thrilling and melancholy, inspiring and introspective.

DVD aspect ratio
I know this discussion and these comments are years old, but since I just discovered this ...
While I do not doubt that Mr. Beirne is correct that the theatrical version is what the director intended, I found this site's comparison of the DVDs to be very enlightening:[...]
The most disheartening part is the clearly inferior sampling rate of the MGM DVD release compared to the original IRE DVD. The clarity in the IRE images, compared to the MGM images, is startling. Also, seeing both aspect ratios directly compared, it seems obvious to me that the images were very much composed with 1:1.33 in mind, if not exclusively for it.
Personally, I think the composition of the images in that ratio are superior, but the poor sampling rate of the widescreen version makes it hard to make a fair comparison.

Full of Visualizations and Music!
I remember this film when it first came out. It was quite a visual experience in the theatre. It is reduced on DVD but still it is an opportunity to see a fascinating movie. I really enjoyed it.

Crappy movie
Was dissapointed with this one. I let the movie play but couldn't take watching alot of it.
Rating :
Good, not 5 stars though
Overall I think this is an excellent movie! It is interesting, the acting is good, and I really like the movie.
I have only two complaints:
1- The movie could be longer. This is more of a good thing, because it means that I would like to see more of it. It really was interesting.
2- It sort of seems that the budget wasn't very big for the movie. If this movie was ever remade, the only thing I think they should do differently is make it even more futuristic. The cars look like regular cars, in fact even older, but they just make a humming noise to sound like they are advanced. Didn't like that detail. Other aspects of the movie are a little low budget.
I know I should be looking into the meaning of the movie instead of the flashiness (or lack there off) but I'm just saying it would have been 5 out of 5 stars if they followed those two points.
Bottom line; BUY IT! or at least rent it, because it is an excellent movie.

A beautiful film
This has to be one of the most pleasing, thought provoking and beautifully made science fiction films of the decade. The movie is briliantly acted out, well crafted and will leave the viewer affected by its charm and dignity.

To defeat genetic fate you have to cheat
A little masterpiece of science-fiction from and about the time when everything will be governed by the genome of every individual. You will be identified through it, you will be followed from birth to grave by it. Good morning Vietnam, good morning genome-drome, genoism. You will be nothing but a complex DNA identity. Too complex to memorize, but any machine can memorize even more complex things and recognize them. But here we have several couples of interest and rivalry. A child born naturally and whose fate is doomed to be deemed bad and it is supposed to be bad, and life expectancy is as low as some odd 30 years. On the other side his brother was genetically correct and perfect. Unluckily the former has a dream and the latter has none. The former is motivated to do what only the genetic elite can do, and he is not. The latter is motivated to do nothing except be a bureaucrat that will trace out all the "fakes", the non-genetically perfect who are trying to go through nevertheless, frauds in other words, like his own brother. The latter will find a way to go through the genetic selection by assuming the identity of a genetically perfect man who suffered a severe accident and cannot be anything any more. That is hard work, but that is possible because they are only dealing with machines, as long as they are dealing with machines. But there comes a time, and it is a lot earlier in the story than you may think, that one will trace the fraud but will say nothing because he has a personal reason to see if the fraud will go through and that the fraud will go through. Remember: it is a Mark Twain trick: a right handed man normally holds his [...] with his right hand when he urinates, and a left handed man does the reverse. The details of the end are not interesting here. One thing is interesting though. If the future world decides to become genetically correct we are going to cheat a lot because success anywhere depends on only one thing: motivation, first and foremost, and intellectual and even physical qualifications are only second to that motivation. A small prodigious marvel to be seen by anyone who believes man is better and more important than science which is only an extension of man's mental and nervous system, not a replacement, a prosthesis.

Gattica: the DVD
This great science fiction story is both thought-provoking and entertaining. It is an update of the themes from earlier science fiction stories: "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley and "Player Piano" by Kurt Vonnegut. Genetic engineering leads to societal engineering which brings about alienation for those of us who are unfortunate mishaps. The musical score is haunting, the acting hits the mark, the dialogue is clever and the sets are convicing. The events in the story are frighteningly plausible with credible characters. i am happy to have this as part of my DVD collection so I can view it again and share it with friends.

Question : How do I turn off the SAP on my Sony Bravia
Hi there. I have a Sony Bravia and cannot figure out how to turn off the SAP. I have tried going into the settings and the language is set to English. I have tried searching online and cannont find anything. I remember on my parent's old Sony TV there was a SAP button. But not on this remote. Shows that automatically offer it start broadcasting in Spanish. Does anyone know how to turn it off Where do I go (in the settings) to change the option
Answer:
Find out where the "audio settings" menu is. Make sure the audio settings is set to "Stereo", instead of SAP.

Question : How does the sony bravia power light work
I was just wondering how the power light on the sony bravia works....it is the one with the glass panel that has the light
Answer:
The light source for the power light is above the plexiglas in the TV. The light from this bulb is focused downward through the plexiglas to an indentation that is machined into the plexiglas at a 45 degree angle. The projected power light is then reflected off this area of the plexiglas, giving you the illusion that the light is suspended in the plexiglas with no visible electrical connections.
