Poor Quality, Inferior Product

We purchased this television in January 2006 and the lamp went out within the first 3 months. Now the $2000 set, at 2 1/2 years old, has a problem with the light engine and color wheel. I have no picture sometimes with off an on screen with distorted colors and a loud grinding noise from the set. I am told it will cost around $700 to fix. I did not expect television like this to only last a couple of years. When I contacted Toshiba their customer service basically says too bad for consumers with the bad luck of purchasing their poor quality, unreliable product. I do not plan to give Toshiba another dime. I understand there may be a class action for some models on the lamp issue.

Great TV.......at first

I ordered the 52HM95 in 2005 and at first, I thought it was the best. The picture on it was the best I have seen. However, in the first year, the lamp burned out, fortunately, it was still under warranty and was replaced without cost to us. The remote has a distinct hum to in whenever it is lit(whenever a button is pushed). We recently noticed discolorization on the left hand of the screen, which looks distinctly like a magnet is too close to the screen. Since It is a freestanding television with no magnets or speakers anywhere near it, I can only assume it is due to the internal speakers of the television. Toshiba will do nothing about it since it is out of warranty. I would warn anyone to stay away from Toshiba televisions and look elsewhere.

Absolutely love it!!!

2 years old, and still going strong! No issues at all. Fantastic picture, and with the integrated stand, really looks nice. It had the nicest picture of all the DLP sets in the store when I bought it.

No problem at all!!

We bought this TV in June 2006. It was the display model at Sears. After finally getting the remote and manual (always a problem when buying a demo) we were in business.
First we had Dish Network, and a fantastic picture! (Install guy was a bit jealous.) About a year ago we went to cable (Broadstripe - Michigan) and continue to get a great picture.
We have had NO bulb issues, amazing seeing how it was a demo. (Having said that, I just bet that bulb is going to blow now!)
Sound is excellent. Picture is to die for.
Maybe we just got lucky with our model. I mean sure, we'll have to replace the bulb sometime, but it beats replacing the whole tv, e.g., like when the plasma tv wears out.
I'd buy one again, and recommend it to a friend.

59HM95 Very Poor Lamp Life and Customer Support

After purchasing this television in late 2005, we've had to replace the lamp (bulb) three times! The second lamp (bulb) we purchased in December 2007 lasted for less than 90 days after it was installed! At $250 - $300 a each, this is adding a lot to the cost of ownership. March 6, 2008, when I went to the Toshiba website I found Toshiba added a two year extended warranty to the lamp; however, when I called Toshiba customer service I was told that the exteneded warranty was only for the ORIGINAL lamp. Since I am on my THIRD lamp it doesn't apply to me. Please don't take my word for it, read other reviews from Toshiba DLP owners who are having the same or similar problems BEFORE you buy! Buyer beware.

Great picture, Easy setup

I have had this set for almost 3 years and a house move without a single problem. Yes, there is a light spot in the center of the screen that is visible when it's not on.. It has not impacted the picture quality that I can decern. Recently, the bulb went. I remembered buying an extend bulb replacement policy. I was told when I purchased the set that the bulbs would need to be replaced. What I did not figure was it would take 3 years for the first bulb to expire and my policy expired in two years.. We have watch at least three hours a day for three years = 3000 hours. not bad.. the extended warrentees was a waste as they tend to be... great technology.. better than my 42" Panasonic the LCD

Love the TV but buy the extended warranty

Well we love this TV bought in 04 but have gone thru 4 bulbs. 2 bulbs the repairman confessed the last was an off brand 'generic' bulb and didn't hold up so insist on the Toshibas. THANK THE LORD we bought the extended 4 year warranty giving us 5 years and they said after the 3rd replacement they would now replace the entire TV. Our friends have the same Tv bought before we bought ours and have only had to replace one bulb and their TV is on 9am to midnight daily. Go figure.
I will check this "low" setting aka read the manual. We did buy some $300+ surge protector thing which they said would be murder on the bulbs if we didn't. So happy with Best Buys' warranty and service anyways, they really are excellent with customer service.
BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. This one is totally worth it.

Toshiba 52HM84 - One of the most frustrating purchases

The TV is good until the lamp breaks. For me this has happened three times so far, every 14 months in average. The worst is now I just bought the third lamp, paid $200, and the thing (I can't call it a TV) doesn't work. So I ended up with a $3000 purchase (this was 2004 and it came with stand) + what I paid for the lamps, and after 4 years and all this money spent I have a non functional TV and a stand. Cheating on your customers? I promised to myself: no Toshiba product ever again for me!

Beware of the lifespan of the lamp

I bought Toshiba 62HM84 in May 2005 and already replaced 4 lamps. I really like the picture quality however the cost to replace the lamp is too expensive. Luckily I bought the extended warranty which covered the lamp replacements. We set it low light and turned on about 6 hour/day. This is the most expensive DLP HDTV unit. I will avoid buying Toshiba brand in the future.Toshiba 62HM84 62-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection DLP TV

DO NOT BUY Panasonic DLP TV

I bought Panasonic PT52DL on October 10, 2003. It worked fine for a while then all of sudden, on January 10, 2004, there was no picture. I called the company and they directed me to a local facility. They came and picked up the TV. First they told me the light bulb was out and it was backordered. After three weeks they got the light bulb and now they are telling me it is not the bulb, it is some other part that is still backordered. As of March 2, 2004 they have no idea when they will get my TV fixed. DO NOT BUY till Panasonic has fixed its problems with service.

Looks good but stay away!!

I loved the technical features of this TV when I bought it in 2001. But it was bad news from the start. It took 4 months to get from FL (I'm in CA) and I think I got a floor model. The picture wouldn't come on half the time. It was in for service twice for the same symptoms before it was finally returned in working order. Warranty service replaced the color wheel and lamp.

Here's a really stupid design flaw that's bound to cost you money: The TV can be turned off from set as well as from the remote. But the cooling fan only runs when the remote-off is used. This fan must run or damage will occur to the bulb and color wheel. So we have been told by the factory service shop to NEVER shut it off from the set. Although we didn't do this, what do you suppose happens with demo models? Of course, customers and sales guys likely power-down at the set.

I bought four expensive lamps ($500+ each) since I had the TV. One lasted only a week, last year. So I sent the unit back for service thinking something else may be causing these million dollar bulbs to blow. For good measure we replaced the ballasts and the bulb. If this fifth bulb fails soon I'm tossing this $10,000 pile of junk out the window.

If, by now, you're still considering this TV keep in mind that it doesn't have HDMI ports. I suppose they weren't around back in 2001. But they're kind of important today.

Do Not Buy

I purchased this TV in Dec 2001 for $9,000 (+or-). They gave me the floor model for the upcoming Olympic Games until mine arrived. I paid over $20,000 for an entire system from Tweeter in Dallas. Nothing but problems- receivers, Direct TV and other issues. This TV has been turned on no more than 50 times in 5 years. Every time the system was used there was a problem, but until two weeks ago I had at least a picture. I too, was promised this was simple and time tested- the lamp might have to be replaced in a few years with heavy use. Since I do not watch much TV, I was not concerned. From one expert it is the Color Wheel. I am waiting for two more reports and Tweeter will be out this week to give me their opinion. I have contacted five high end customer service oriented stores in Dallas and they all had horror stories about the problems even the floor models in the showroom. I was informed that this product had been on the market for awhile when I purchased it-not so. Contact me through e-mail if you want more details. I may end up in Small Claims Court (recovery under $10,000). The positive review must have come from Panasonic's public relations Dept.

Questions & Answers Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Question : how high should you set a 52 inch LCD TV
i just bought a 52 inch Samsung LCD TV (1080p). How high off the floor should I be mounting it I'll be sitting about 10-12 feet away from it

Answer:
It depends just exactly how you are mounting it and what you mount is capable of. If the mount can, I would suggest angling it downward about 10 degrees and then mounting the TV about 4 to 4.5 ft high would be just about right.

Question : can i use any screen to replace the screen in my toshiba 52 inch tv
my boyfriend picked up a tv given to us and the screen blew out and broke the outer one broke but i may need both . ive looked all over the internet and called a few places we played ring around the roses for awhile but it sounds like itll be hard to find a toshiba one ..

Answer:
