Philips Makes It Difficult

Who would've thought speaker wire could be difficult to use? But that's exactly what Philps (practically the inventor of "all things stereo for the home") has done with this product.
I've used all types of speaker wire for many years (for many different applications). All wire I have seen is in someway marked - so that the user can determine which of the two wires will be used for negative and positive on the speaker end and the receiver/power amp end. Usually the wires are recognizable as being two different colors - one is silver and one is red for example. Or sometimes the plastic casing around the wires help the user determine which wire is which - sometimes one has text printed on it.
In the case with the Philips Spooled Wire - they have done neither. You may think this is not a big deal - and it isn't if you are running a foot or two of wire - but if you are running 50 plus feet of wire - this becomes an annoyance. Both wires (and the casing they are in) look exactly alike. There is no way to visually tell them apart.
I dealt with it by choosing one wire, peeling back the casing to expose the bare wire, and then meticulously tracing that particular wire to its end - and then marking it. It would have been easier to just choose silver or red, make the connection - find the other end and do the same.
Had I known this is what the product was like - I would have never purchased it. It's the same as if Philips came out with a DVD player ... and none of the buttons were marked for their functions!

loved it

was perfect to use in finishing our basement and providing quality sound to the home theatre system.

No color coding

While there are some reviewers who could make out some sort of line indicating the difference between the ground and hot wires I sure couldn't. Thinking that perhaps I was getting too long in the tooth and starting to suffer from eye failure, I called several friends. We looked and looked and looked under several different lights and could not find any difference between the two wires. So, while this does the trick sound wise, you get what you pay for. It was a huge pain to have to track and mark almost 100 feet of wire using a black magic marker.

Great inexpensive speaker wire

Not much to say here. This stuff is a decent gauge, decent price, and as usual, Amazon's shipping is excellent.
I used two rolls of this to hook up 7 speakers for surround sound.
As others have noted, it is difficult to see the marking on the one wire, but not a big deal.

Good wire, bad marking

I bought 5 spools of this wire in 3 separate purchases, so obviously I think it's worth the cost. The wire is braided and both are copper (as noted in other reviews here).

My main complaint is that the markings that should show which line is which (the white stripe that should go along one of sheaths) is either very hard to see, or non-existant. 4/5 of mine had a very light white line, the other one had no marking whatsoever.

Yeah, seemed weird to me too.

A suggestion: If you're running several of these lines alongside one another (in a conduit/wall/raceway etc), look into buying some IDEAL Yellow 77 Plus Wire Pulling Lubricant - Wire pulling lubricant. It makes things go a _whole_ lot smoother. (Pun intended. ;))

In all, very happy with this wire.

Editorial Review :

Onkyo, which means 'audio' or 'sound' in Japanese, has been producing precision audio components for over a half-century. This Onkyo HT-S7100 is a serious home-theater surround sound system so your home entertainment won't be compromised in any way. with up to 7.1 channels, you've got all the audio and video processing needed to take full advantage of the audio and video capabilities of Blu-Ray disc players and modern HD video displays, without the complexities of an individual component system. With one-cable HDMI connectivity, Audyssey automatic room setup and calibration, and Onkyo's signature audio performance this sound system is the perfect complement to your HDTV. The front L/R and horizontal center channel speakers each feature a pair of 3-1/8 inch cone woofers and a high quality 1-inch balanced tweeter. For a coherent and timbre-matched surround field, the included surround speakers each use the same drivers as the front speakers, but employ only a single woofer. It also includes a high-power downfiring subwoofer with a 10-inch cone driver with an internal 290 watt amplification module. All crossover points in can be set to any of eight possible settings for ideal integration with the environment and listener preferences. The HT-S7100 featurs Audyssey's Dynamic EQ algorithm, which refines the system's frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment to compensate for deteriorations in the listening experience at different volume levels. When used in combination with the Audyssey 2EQ system, this feature tailors the receiver's output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level distortions, delivering an overall experience that is a much closer match to what the audio production engineers originally intended. The HT-S7100 is home-theater system ready. It includes a full-function RI (Remote Interactive) remote control and Onkyo's RIHD

Good Value

I'll start by saying that this is my first surround sound system.
I'm kind of a techie so I found this system easy to set up. All of the connections are labeled and color coded. Also the speakers calibrate themselves with the included microphone.
I was looking for a surround system in a box without a DVD player - I have my players - and with plenty of inputs. This one has four HDMI inputs plus lots of composite and component inputs.
I'm 98% happy with the remote, it operates the receiver, TV, Satelite DVR, Blu-Ray, and DVD recorder. Can't ask for much more than that.
I really like surround, and this one does it well. I am pleased with the sound considering I spent so little. I have had stereos that cost more, and this surround system sounds better.
I have played some of my favorite CDs and they never sounded better.

I give it four out of five just because better sound is available, but for a lot more money.

Great HTIB with room to grow!

I've had the Onkyo S7100 for quite some time maybe for 9 months now and really enjoying it. To me this is the perfect HTIB (home theater in a box) that comes with a 'real' receiver, the SR606. (note: don't know any new models that came out for Onkyo now since i was really satisfied with S7100 that didn't even care for newer models if there are any.) This was perfect for me since, i was looking for a simple easy set-up home theater system that already comes with speakers and subs and and will give me room in the future to upgrade the speakers if i wanted to (Polk). This HT system gives me that flexibility. I have my PS3, 52A550 Samsung and a PC connected to the receiver using HDMI and everything works perfectly. This to me allowed me to step over completely into the HD world enjoying both 1080p HD video and the HD audio coming from blurays. I liked the simple set-up using the included mic, front speaker stands, bought gauge 14" wires, wall speaker mounts and banana plugs from Monoprice and i was all set. I only have it set-up right now as a 5.1 (room layout constraints in new home) and I am enjoying the sound coming out it. I really enjoy watching movies and playing games with it filling my room with nice crisp sounds and full rich bass. Now i even re-watch movies just to listen and enjoy the sound (ie. Dark Night, Iron Man, 300, Cars, Wolverine). I even tried using Magic Mic (videoke console) connected to it and it is a blast singing with it, feels like singing in a concert hall or karaoke suite if you ever been into one, anyway just wanted to share that bit of info. I got the unit from [...] as a refurbed unit for a little over $[...] and the package came like it's brand new and is perfect. The price as it is makes it a great buy already and for the price i paid made it a better buy. I'm a very practical person that really looks for the best value for performance (did a lot of research) and for the home theater stuff, S7100 gets it done for me.

Great mid-range system for a small to medium sized room

I purchased this system a little over a year ago and it's been running great ever since. I was primarily looking for a mid-range system which included the newer HD audio formats for use with Blu-ray movies. I'm currently using the system in a somewhat small room and the sound from the speakers and sub are reasonable. I had to do some tweaking on the "Setup" screen, but the included microphone which detects where the speakers are located and automatically sets options is pretty reasonable.

The included speakers and subwoofer are decent, especially for a HTIB setup. I plan on buying better speakers and a sub in the future when the system is moved to a larger room, but the included items perform quite well in a smaller environment. The only upgrade I've done in regards to the current setup is better speaker wire. I went ahead and bought some 16 gauge wire from Monoprice before setting everything up. The four HDMI inputs act great as an HDMI switcher. I only have one HDMI cable running to my TV, while my Xbox 360 Elite, Playstation 3, WDTV and standalone Sony BDP-S560 Blu-ray player are connected to the Onkyo receiver. Switches from source-to-source quickly and haven't experienced any issues whatsoever. I have never heard any hissing noises, as I've noticed a few other reviewers have mentioned. However, as others have said, the receiver does get very hot. Be sure to give the receiver ample breathing space, especially around the top where the vents are located.

Overall, a great HTIB for the price. Can be purchased much cheaper than it was a year ago, but newer models are also available now. The receiver can easily be upgraded with better speakers, subwoofers, speaker wire and banana plugs if it's required. Definitely buy better speaker wire beforehand, though. I can't say if this is a great buy for a large room, but I highly recommend it to non-audiophiles in a small to medium sized room.

Good HTiB

I purchased this unit a few weeks ago. Install was simple and I was up and running with in a few hours.

Pros- 4 HDMI inputs, True- HD, DTS all the decoding you could need. Once setup you'll notice noises you never heard before in your favorite movies, TV, Games.

Cons- Speaker wire replacement. The subwoofer is muddy to say the least spent about a week tweaking it. Dark Knight really showed me the faults in the sub. It was unable to keep up with the action scenes and to me was distracting. The sub also distracted from music as well. So after about week of tweaking it I was forced to replace it after I played a track called "bass cooker" and I think I actually cooked my bass. My living room smelled of an electrical fire and being a former Navy electrician it was a smell I was all too familiar with thanks to the USS JFK.

Went to BB and the guy suggested a vescodyn impact 10.

Mostly Great, Poor Remote

These are excellent speakers for the price, and work well wirelessly, just as I would have expected. However, the remote that comes with them does not seem to be of the best design, as it refuses to actually turn the speakers on or off, I always have to do it manually. Volume control works fine, however. A great buy for when you don't want to run speaker wire everywhere!

Ray of Danielsville

Was looking at Amazon's deals and spotted these speakers, after reading a number of reviews decided to try them and made the purchase. When they arrived I wanted to check them to see how they played. Set them up in two different rooms of the house and they played great, well worth the money. Will see how they play outside as soon as weather permits. Was also looking at pool speaker, but will wait until it goes on sale.

Decent

I mainly use these to listen to talk radio, so stereo audio and audiophile-approved sound quality aren't concerns for me. With that in mind, I have one speaker in the basement and one in a detached garage which sits about 20' from the house (total distance from transmitter to speaker is about 40' and through 3 walls).

To clarify, yes they can work in stereo, I just don't use them that way. Additionally, the sound quality is pretty much on par with the price.

Reception has always been great for me.

I do wish the units would remember the last volume setting instead of resetting to the lowest volume upon power-up, but other than that, they have been perfect for my use.

Questions & Answers Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Question : Convert wired home theatre speakers into wireless speakers
Trying to set up home theatre but don't want wires for my rear two speakers running across my den. Is it possible to convert wired speakers into wireless

Answer:
Unfortunately, the process of 'converting' a wired speaker to a wireless is more than likely more hassle than its worth. The reason is simple: the wire provides both the source information (ie, the sound effects or music) and the power information (ie, how loud it is). While we hear everyday about wireless products, speakers require far more *amplification* than your average cell phone, wireless headset (which oftentimes use batteries that run out very quickly), or remote control.Your best bet, as the previous respondent mentioned, is to determine a way to conceal your wiring. There are a lot of choices available, ranging from something as simple as white speaker wire carefully attached to the bottom of your baseboard, all the way to fishing wires through walls and in-wall rear speakers. Most likely that would be a whole new question.Best of luck, hope this helps.

Question : Does anyone have the Direct TV remote code for a Scenium Home Theatre system (model: RTD101)
I just purchased Direct TV and our sound runs through a Scenium Home Theatre system. I want to be able to control the volume through the Direct TV remote but cannot find a code for the Scenium. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:
If your owners manual for the receiver remote you are trying to use does not have the brand listed you may be out. Unless you have a learning remote. But you gave no model number for teh receiver. You may want to try DirecTVs web site to see if there is a better option.
