Great Balance of Features vs. Price

I've owned my Sharp LC52E77U for six months now. Paid $1507 and received it early June 2009. I shopped lots of sets and felt that this was a great set of features for the price in this size screen. It's my 1st HD LCD and the picture quality is superb. I have not had any problems with the set and would recommend others purchase the set at the current lower price. There will always be new bells and whistles, but I am very happy with this set and don't feel that I would need (or use) a set with more features.

Calibration Settings + Tips/Tricks

Since I have owned this TV for a few months now, I thought it would be helpful to share a few tips and tricks I have learned:

PROBLEM: INCOMPATIBLE AUDIO SIGNAL

All my A/V devices (360, PS3, Wii, Samsung DTB-H260F) were connected to my Onkyo TX-SR607 receiver with HDMI, which was set to output to my Sharp Aquos LC-52E77U. And, although the receiver was set to "Audio TV Out" off (and even with it on), the TV kept popping up this error:

"Incompatible audio signal has been received, please check the output signal."

It only pops up for a few seconds, and only when I would switch devices or resolution or whatever. Still, pretty annoying. Connecting the devices directly to the TV via HDMI caused the same error - the only time it didn't happen is when there was 2ch 44.1/48Khz PCM involved.

Unfortunately, unlike every other TV I have ever owned, the Sharp doesn't have a menu option to disable audio. Muting didn't help, either.

The solution? Set the audio volume to 0. No more error!

PROBLEM: NO DEVICE DETECTED (DVI -> HDMI)

When I first got this TV, I plugged in my Mac Mini, using a DVI -> HDMI cable. After using it for a bit, the TV would stop recognizing that the Mac Mini was connected. It turns out that, whenever the Mac Mini would be rebooted or would go to sleep, the Sharp would refuse to recognize that it was connected anymore.

The solution? Physically unplugging and plugging in the TV (not just pressing the power button), and disabling sleep on the Mac. I still have to do this unplugging dance occasionally - like for system updates - but not as often as when sleep was enabled. I guess that's the price you pay for a beautiful 1080p HDMI signal, as opposed to a letterboxed 1600x1200 VGA signal - the max this TV supports.

CALIBRATION SETTINGS

This TV has some definite problems with blues in areas of high contrast. Here are the best settings I have found, in order of their appearance in the menus:

OPC: Off
Backlight: +6 (you can adjust up or down a smidge if need be)
Contrast: +36
Brightness: -6
Color: +1
Tint: +1
Sharpness: -1

CMS Hue/Saturation/Value: 0
Color Temp.: Low (leave at Mid for color managed devices like Macs, or OTA TV)
R Gain: +11
G Gain: 0
B Gain: -10
Fine Motion Enhanced: Off (leave on for sports if you prefer)
Active Contrast: Off
Gamma Adjustment: 0
Film Mode: Off (I used Advanced(Low) for sports)
Digital Noise Reduction: Off
Monochrome: Off
Range of OPC: +16 Max, -16 Min (it is off, anyways)

Awesome LCD TV!!

I bought this LCD TV from an Air Force BX on "Black Saturday" for $1199 and it came with a free sound bar. Amazing deal since the lowest other price I found that weekend was $1399 w/o the free sound bar. The only negative thing about the TV is the sound but most LCD TVs really need either a sound bar or home theater system. Picture is awesome and I actually like the OPC function b/c my kids don't need to watch Dora etc. and raise my electric bill....I'll save the best picture for when my wife and I are watching it:)

Great TV for Blu Ray, HD TV and Gaming!

Wow. I had been looking at 1080p 120hz TVs for at least 6 months. I lost track of how many reviews, articles and forums I visited during that time frame during my search for information on the best buys and TVs to avoid.

I had my heart set on a Samsung, but one look at this Sharp on the floor at my local costco and I was hooked.

The picture is great. I would rate it equal to the high dollar Samsung red line TV my folks have. Blu Rays look awesome, my FIOS HD service is phenomenal and gaming with my PS3 is an exciting experience.

The TV has everything you need, a ton of HDMI hookups, easy to use remote and on screen menus to name a few.

The only negative aspect of the TV is the sound. It is adequate for normal use, but if you are used to any type of surround sound you will be wanting more than the built in speakers. I did have a Sony surround sound system, but it was of an older variety and didn't have the HDMI or optical outputs. I ended up hooking up my Bose Ipod dock to the TV....sounds great!!

In my opinion this is a ton of TV for the bucks! Costco had it for $1300....

Great

Like it a whole lot. Arrived in perfect condition with no dead pixels. Only complaints would be:
1. 120hz might not be as big a deal as advertisers are trying to make us think.
2. I think I remember seeing something about "backlighting" which I thought was something else... but of course that was my fault.

For those who own this TV, get the firmware update at sharpusa.com

I had this TV since last november. I just decided to check out the website for any info and I found that this TV has a new firmware update since October of 2009. You're gonna have to download it to a USB drive that is formated as "FAT."

Go here and search for this TV model:

Great TV. Very pleased so far.

I've had this TV for about 3 weeks now and I am very pleased thus far. I did an agonizing amount of research and this seemed like the best deal for a 52" TV. I went with the 120HZ as I heard it enhanced viewing sports and was a definate plus with Blu Ray (which I do not yet have). I cant really judge this feature as I have no point of reference. HD programming looks outstanding as do DVD's. I expected bad sound and this was the case. But a few days ago we switched from Direct TV to Comcast and my wife and I were stunned at how much better the TV sounded. Night and day. Why this is I do not know....
The blacks on this screen are very dark and look outstanding. Just watched "The Descent" which is an extremely dark movie and it looked just great.
Anyway I recommend this TV if you are looking for an affordable 52" from a reputable manufacturer.

Great TV for the price

I was looking for a 52 inch TV to upgrade from my 32 inch and ended up going with Sharp Aquos. I was always a fan of Samsung and love my 32 inch A450 but I was worried about the reflection that the Samsung's have, due to the glossy screen, as I have a family room with a lot of windows. The Sharp has a matte finish with no reflection so I have been very happy in that regard. The picture quality on this TV is very good when adjusted. It took me a little while to get the right settings for my room but now that I have it set the picture quality is great. After setting up the TV I had to upgrade the cables on my cable box as they caused the TV to be fuzzy (standard vga cables). Once I upgraded to component cables the picture quality of HD and regular was very noticeable. I have a PS3 and Apple TV and both look fantastic when running at 1080p. Even the Wii looks good but I will probably upgrade to component on the Wii in order to get higher quality. The 120hz works well even though I'm sure newer models are probably even better but I've been happy with the quality of football etc on this TV. The only area this TV could use help with is the sound. The sound is kind of empty but not bad for general watching. If you are big into sound quality you might want to check out other TV's but many LCD's are not great so external sources may be needed.

I was able to get a great deal on this TV at another vendor, under Eleven Hundred dollars so for that price this Tv is fantastic as many Samsung and Sony 42 inch TV's with 1080p and 120hz are that price right now with. If you are looking for a TV take a look at Sharp, for the price and features they are very good. They don't have the extra features such as hooking up to your internet but who wants that and why would you want to pay for those features. I just want a great picture at a great price, not to receive RSS feeds over my broadband connection.

incredible

unbelievable picture. you can find calibration settings on cnet. I agree...contrast ratios are overrated....amazing picture and clarity. I also purchased the cheetah mount and had this tv on the wall in less than an hour. saved a lot of money compared to buying at bestbuy etc.

no negatives about this TV at all. I was comparing this to the Samsung and Sony V series....just got a heck of deal on this and I am not looking back.

Stopped working after 6 mths

This seemed like the best deal for the size tv I wanted. I first had a problem with the delivery. I was told the tv would be set up for me as long as I had the tv stand, but the delivery men said they were not authorized to do that and just brought the box inside. After having the tv for 6 mths, the picture went out. I called the customer service # and the rep said to hold down 2 buttons at the same time. When I did this, smoke started coming out of the back of the tv. They said they would send someone out to fix it in a wk, but no one showed up. When they finally did come they said they had to order a part and would be back in a wk. It has been over a week and still have not heard from them.

Great TV

I bought this television after looking at all the other options out there and I am really happy with it. The screen is great and the pictures are incredible. I use this with my PS3 and the games look good and the screen works great with all the fast action of the PS3.

The best 52 inch out there

After returning a defective Samsung LN-52A550, I decided to give this a try. Bhoy I made the right decision! Ignore any contrast ratio rating by so called experts. This is the one to own. Aquos picture is the best in the business. Clarity of pictures is so amazing. So crisp on HDTV, that we can't help on watching more blu-ray on it. I also use this as an awesome monitor while I type this review. Never again will I stray on another Korean brand like Samsung. Their quality and customer service is pathetic. I was also considering the SONY KDL-52V4100. Picture is not close to this Aquos. You have to get their XBR series to land a crisp picture compared to this Aquos.

Pros: 5Hdmi, 4ms response time . Slimmest of the bunch,3.0 Energy Certified. Amazing picture with correct setting, great design, Japanese quality, exceptional customer serice. This is Acura, Lexus of televisions

Question : How should I set up a treasure hunt for a large group of young children in a library and parking lot
I'll be setting up a treasure hunt to start off a party at my local library. In past years, around 50 or more children have come to the party so I should expect the same number (maybe even more). The children range in age from 5 up to 10 (although I was planning that the really young children would get help from their parents). The hunt will be set up in the library parking lot (which is pretty big) and in the children's section of the library. The only problem is, I'm not really sure how to set it up Should the children work in groups or should they work alone Should they have to carry a sheet and maybe pick up a sticker at each clue to make sure they go to each clue Should a library volunteer be at each clue to read the clue to the children or should the children read the clues themselvesAny ideas or help would be amazing :)

Answer:
I am a volunteer at a Children's Science Museum. (Great Explorations) We conducted a Treasure Hunt at the Museum as an orientation for volunteers. It was really fun. Your ideas are great. Since you are working with younger children, parents and library volunteers will be a big help. Kids should attempt to read the clues but be allowed to ask for help. Yes, they should each carry a sheet and collect stickers. They will love that. Don't make a rule about working in groups or alone....they will naturally select which option is more comfortable. I know your treasure hunt will be a huge success
