Gave good service but picture gave out after 2 years
This TV gave good service for two years during which we had no problem with it. But, after 2 years, the backlight for the LCD gave out. Now, when the TV is turned on, the picture appears very briefly and then fades to black. One can still hear the sound, however. For a $750 TV, I expected a lot more than 2 years of service.

You have to be kidding me
Bought this TV for a good price but had issues with the slow powerup and slight bluriness. HOWEVER, after owning it for 20 monts (1yr 8 mos) the picture (video) went dark. Googled the problem for this model number and got crazy number of reviews that all had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Called Toshiba and took the unit to one of their authorized servicers. They called back and said the "panel" has to be replaced (that's the WHOLE TV). The quote was $1,600.00 for the repair - WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOSHIBA regardless of the quality of the picture or the features. Of course this problem occurs ONLY AFTER WARRANTY has expired
Feature are absolutely useless if the TV is dead!!!

Another unfortunate customer
Bought the Toshiba Regza 32" HDTV in January of '08 and it worked just fine until yesterday when it suddenly lost its picture. Audio works fine and I can change channels, but no picture, just a blank screen. After reading the reviews here I guess I have joined the ranks of the poor souls who paid alot of money for a TV only to have it last less than 2 years. I liked this TV until yesterday. Toshiba can kiss my you know what......I'll never buy one of their products again. Unfortunately I have another Toshiba flat screen in the bedroom.....guess I'll wait and see how long it lasts. I'm buying a new TV tonight and I'll see what can be done with the Toshiba.....maybe I'll take it back to the store and leave it in front of their door. They can use it for a door stop. Buyers.....I would consider what we are saying here.....think about it.

Failed just after warranty expired;customer service was rude and condescending
I had this television for just over a year when the picture failed. The sound was fine, the channels changed, but there was no picture. (After some research, I discovered that many people have had the same problem with Toshibas.) The warranty period had just elapsed so I contacted Toshiba customer service to see what could be done. Not only were they rude and insulting but they indicated that failure of the television happened and said that that was just something that should be accepted with Toshibas. They suggested that I should have gotten an extended warranty.
Repair of the television is approximately $600. The television cost just over $800 new. Due to this experience, I can confidently say I will not be purchasing a new Toshiba again. Samsung and Sony definitely make a better, more reliable product, plus their customer service is much more professional, helpful, and courteous.

Love It
I have had this for a while now & have had NO PROBLEMS whatsoever, even with the built-in DVD player. Can't go back, my next TV will be a REGZA 1080p. When I have a room for a TV, it'll be there! HIGHLY recommend!

Customer Review :
Wonderful set, but
You can get it for less at a retail store. I paid $799 for this in Spring 2007 at my local Costco.. Circuit City and Best Buy wanted $1300!
While researching the set, I compared it (at Circuit City) to a Sony Bravia sitting next to it. Picture settings were the same and they were running the same feed.. the 37HL67 blew the Bravia away. And the fact that I could get it for almost $600 less, coupled with 3 HDMI when most sets this size only had 2 made it an easy purchase.
Standard def is as good as it can be. HD varies by channel and program, something you'll notice once you start watching programming.
Hockey and Basketball look GREAT, football and baseball.. look better on a plasma. PS3/XBOX 360/Wii all look amazing, as do Blu-ray movies.
Def. a worthwhile buy, but shop around and try to get a better price!

A bargain - Great with HD signal, only so-so with non-HD
I bought this TV back in Dec. 2007 as a gift for my older parents. They've used it daily ever since.
Before purchasing this model I found a professional review that stated that the HD quality was more than acceptable for this model (keep in mind it's 720p), but that non-HD digital and analog signals were some of the worst you'll find in this price range. I know, you buy a TV like this for watching HD. Problem is, you don't always receive HD.
Before I bought my parents an upcoverting DVD player they used the regular player for this TV and it was just horrible. The picture was worse than what they had with the older analog set. Rushed out and bought the new DVD player. That problem was fixed.
They receive their digital TV over antenna. Keep in mind that on antenna you can get three signals - analog (which disappears in 2009), digital (regular signal for lack of another term) and HD. Since analog is going the way of the dodo there's no need to address that. However, there are plenty of times that the digital signal is not in HD. When that happens, this TV's picture is kind of disappointing. Not horrible, no, but if you're stuck without an HD signal long enough it will make you wonder why you spent so much money.
Keep in mind that there are digital TVs that do handle non-HD signals quite well - but you have to find the professional technical reviews out there to find out which ones they are.
This might sound like I'm bashing this TV, but I don't intend to. It was worth the money. Just buyer beware. Buy this if you know you're going to receive an HD signal on a regular basis. If not, you might want to look for a different model.

Best TV ever
Great picture. Excellent white glove delivery. It was so good that I bought a 2nd one exactly like it for our 2nd bedroom.

Great quality for the price.
I have had this TV for about 5 months (yes, I used my tax rebate). I was lucky and found it on sale as an end of line since the new ones were coming out. I had gone to the store planning to buy the newest Toshiba 37" (not Regza) but got this one instead as it was exactly the same for less money. I love it! I had upgraded from a 21" CRT so it was a huge improvement. I find the picture quality, sound and menus to be very good. My only complaint is when I watch DVDs I have to turn the sound way up, but this is probably not really an issue with the TV itself. I researched the LCD market heavily before I bought and I believe I made the best choice for me. I highly recommend this TV (and Toshiba in general) as a great choice for a great price.

Side by Side vs Aquos 1080P and Regza Won!!!
My husband does the research and was going top buy a 37" Sharp Aquos 1080P until he and I compared the two pictures with the same input (even alternated the connectors) and the Toshiba beat it every time for sharpness (no pun intended), color, clarity and the capture and display of movement, (pucks, etc during a game that was also viewed during the demo).
It was only a little bit less than the Sharp Aquos and 1080P seemed the better investment prior to the side by side comparison where the Regza never had any fuzziness and the Aquos did. After to approximately two years, we have never had a problem and our Toshiba Regza picture is still as clear and sharp as when we brought it home. There are several Toshiba TVs out there and I can only speak to the Regza models which I am of the impression have a superior engine to their other Toshiba models.
Would we buy another one again, darn straight we would.

The Green Monster!
I saw this LCD at Costco for $[...] and it looked much better than the Vizio's and Panasonic plasmas lined up next to it so I bought it along with a Panny Blu Ray player. I also auditioned the Samsung's and Sony's at Sears and decided that the Toshiba was at the right price with all the features of a Samsung or Sony (which cost $[...] more than the Regza at the same screen size).
I then realized that the Regza has a serious green over saturation problem that CANNOT be fixed by adjusting the green color controls in the Color Master settings. The greens are especially amplified when you look at blonde hair or certain light skin tones - like faces - and they all look green!!! Even on Blu Ray this is happening!
I then found that other people noticed this as well on AVS forum as well as a professional review of 46" version of this LCD - CNET - I believe. Once I knew this, the greens became EXTREMELY apparent and annoying to the point it was distracting me from my movie watching. So, I returned the Toshiba to Costco for a full refund. Thank goodness I didn't order this online from some e-tailer.
So, point of the story is : even though the 42xv540u is a great tv and has all these wonderful features like 120hz and 10bits at a great price with a bright screen, the fundamental picture i.e. color of things will always be skewed - FOREVER. So, if your gonna spend a GRAND or so on a TV that you want to last you at least a few years, DON'T CHEAP OUT AND GET THIS TV, spend the extra dough and get a Sony or Samsung or something else.

Excellent TV, even better when you figure in the low price!
I purchased this television locally, and I absolutely love it! The picture is incredible, especially on my Playstation 3 (games and movies). I haven't even tweaked the settings much yet, and it is a beautiful picture. I can't believe the number of features crammed into this television for the price (I paid $1099). This set had many more features than similarly priced Sony, Samsung, or Sharp models. The setup was incredibly easy, also. I just plugged everything right in! I have a DVR, digital cable box, PS3, and home theater system, so I was surprised how well it went. One nice thing is that this set has both analog and digital audio inputs. A friend bought a Philips 47 inch LCD and had problems because it only had digital audio. He had to use the headphone jack to use his home theater (I only add this to show the number of features). The user interface on this set is great, as well, I found it easy to move between inputs, adjust settings, etc. All in all, a wonderful set, and an excellent value at this price!!
Don't look solely at the rating on this, as there are several idiotic reviews that have nothing to do with the television itself!! Read for yourself and you will see that nearly all of the real ratings for this set are 5 star.

An OK HDTV
This Toshiba HDTV has reasonably decent picture quality, though not equal to the best I've seen. Set up wasn't too difficult, though I can't use the remote that came with it; I have to use the cable remote to access all the features. Sound quality is adequate, though not inspiring. The biggest drawback is that there is no headphone jack, incredible as that sounds. I can't watch this TV with headphones to avoid annoying my wife. I ordered this TV online and it never occurred to me to make sure it had a headphone jack. I've had probably 30 televisions in my life and I think this is the first without a headphone jack.
Except for that (serious) drawback, this is an ok television for the price.

Love my t.v.
I have had this TV for about 2 months and I love it! The high def is fantastic. We have yet to see any of those digital squares to come up during football games or action movies. I can't wait to see what the pictue will be like with a BlueRay player.Everything is supper crisp! The sound is great I don't even need to hook it in to my stereo. Our other TV is a 32 in. Regza also. Not as good as this it a 720i but it has lasted well and is now in the bedroom. It was in the living room and had been banged on by little children and sippy cups. That TV is still in great condition and have no problems with it. I believe the Toshiba to be a great long lasting sturdy product. It seems to be a great value. I would recommend the Toshiba to anyone.

Great TV, but HD service is required
I saw this TV in a big electronics store in February while visiting friends in San Diego and was really impressed with the quality of the picture. I had researched TVs in Consumer Reports a year ago and had decided that a 720 p was all I needed because of the limited number of programs being transmitted in HD and the increase in monthly service from Direct TV for the HD signal. But I put off the purchase and now a year later I had a hard time finding a 42" TV that wasn't 1080. I was also impressed with the 120 Hz vs the 60 Hz. The TV arrived and as soon as I hooked it up to my Standard Def Direct TV DVR I was very dissatified with the fuzzy pictures. All the SD programs that I was paying for looked aweful because the screen was so much larger than what we had before. So I called Direct TV and upgraded to HD service. After installation of a new oval dish and a new HD DVR, the picture quality is fantastic, even for programs that don't appear on the Direct TV program guide as coming in HD. The only problem I'm having is that I can't get the TV remote to recognize the brand new Direct TV DVR. Instead we programmed the DVR remote to recognize the TV but the DVR remote can't do all the functions that are on the TV, so we still need both remotes.

Question : Which make of LCD HD ready 40" tv is better trying to decide between a Samsung, Toshiba & Panasonic
Only want to spend upto £500, been to Comet so far seen an Samsung LE40B530P7WXXU but review say poor sound quality, I 've never had a samsung only had an Panasonic LCD in the past. Can anyone help
Answer:
All HD tvs have poor sound quality, so your best bet is to hook any one you get to an external sound system. Even a small, stereo bookshelf system will sound much better. As for the LCD tvs. Samsung would be the best with Sony second best. The others are not as good pic quality.
