Excellent picture and okay sound.

This is a great TV.The set has 3 HDMI inputs which is nice though many in this price range seem to have 4. It is the ease in set-up. You literally plug it in, turn it on, answer a few easy questions, and you're done.
The set also features advances picture controls many of which I have not had time adjust but should provide enough control to satisfy any one who considers themselves a video god. Also this TV features basic audio controls (treble bass & balance) as well as features like stable sound, voice enhancing, and bass boost so the control over audio is pleasing.

In short, if you are on a budget but you really want a good lcd tv at least 40 inches then this is a fantastic buy.

Good price, but you might want to look elsewhere

I bought this TV after much research of models in the under $1000 range. This TV has a good price and, when it works correctly, is a nice TV. However, mine has some problem with its sound, where the sound starts echoing after a little while of watching. I can easily solve the problem by turning the TV off and on, but it's still unacceptable for a brand-new TV. I haven't called Toshiba's tech support yet to see about a solution.

An all around contender, a steal for the price!

I was looking for a replacement for a 32 inch Toshiba LCD which has served me well over the years. Deterred by mixed reviews I was looking at everything but Toshiba. I purchased a 37" Vizio XVT series which is an excellent all around television...except for very muddy black levels. It just wouldn't make it as my primary display. I came back to Toshiba and could not avoid the value. A 40 inch LCD with 120 hz processing for less than $700.00...how could I not at least give it a try? I will say that out of the box I thought the picture was just o.k. It took me quite a bit of tweaking to get a satisfactory picture but now I would put the set up against anything else out there. Here is my detailed review:

Design: Nothing fancy here. Glossy black frame with the highly touted deep lagoon design along the bottom. It adds a nice touch but still a very basic nice looking lcd tv. The base does not swivel but damn is it a sturdy platform for this tv. You can also choose to turn off the lit Toshiba logo on the bottom of the screen.

Blacks/Whites: WOW! This is the strong point for this tv. The black level is easily equal to anything else out there and better than most. Letterbox frames are as dark as the bezel! Whites are equally bright and impressive. This being considered it was a nightmare to get the tv to produce satisfactory shadow detail. Finally, I adjusted the static gamma to level 10, and along with my other adjustments have found great detail.

Color: Another setting that I had to mess around with quite a bit. Now I have reds that pop without becoming orange as the Samsungs tend to do and I have an all around natural color palette.

Motion: I have found no problems with motion on this set. Actually, I would rate the smooth motion feature far ahead of the competition. Unlike other lcd's there is no soap opera effect, it is very subtle. Watching blu-ray discs you really get a true film like presentation.

Viewing effects: I would say that the off angle performance of this tv is very good. The matte screen deflects all but direct light. I have read poor reviews for viewing angle but I have to disagree.

Sound: When I first turned this tv on I was horrified. I had read that the sound was terrible but didn't expect it to be this bad. Thankfully after turning off the extend feature, which is virtual surround, the echo was gone. The sound quality is fine! It is not like listening to a hi-fi system but it is clear and fine for normal viewing.

Remote: I have always liked this remote and the Toshiba menu system has gotten even better over the years.

Conclusion: With a little tweaking this is a very good television at an incredibly low price. In addition to sterling high definition performance, standard definition looks better than on most of the competition. If your budget is tight you can have a truly high end television with the Toshiba 40xv645u. I highly recommend this set.

Manufacturer Defect, Beware!

My husband and I bought this television at at retail store and not at Amazon. Since we have had the tv hooked up there has been a reoccurring problem: the sound of whatever is on will suddenly sound as though it is underwater! I instantly called up Toshiba and they told me that they are aware of the problem but have not found a solution as of yet. They advised me to buy a deep color hdmi cord and make sure that the deep color is turned on in the settings. I had done all of this and nothing has changed. In order to make the sound go back to normal I must turn the tv off and then on again. I have continued to call them every time that this issue happens and they tell me that they are logging my complaints. They said they are not going to come to my house to check this out because they say that they can not do anything for me. I say that this is a manufacturer recall and they should not continue to sell an item that they know is a problem. Just thought that I would warn anyone interested.

Very good TV

This TV has both an excellent picture and excellent sound. Consumer Reports rated this TV very highly, and I believe they were right. I have a very good sound system which can be used in conjunction with this TV, but most of the time I leave it off and just use the TV's internal sound because it is so good. My previous TV was a Toshiba, and it lasted about 12 years. That experience and the Consumer Reports' recommendation of Toshiba leads me to expect a long life from this unit.

4.5 stars anyway - better than the current Sonys

I had bought a Sony KV-32FS100 which got returned. This is the set that replaced it. It has none of the convergence problems the Sony had, and other than a slight trapezoid image (narrower on the right side - the Sony had this also) the geometry is quite good. Both the Sony I returned, and the Sony display model where I bought this set, had serious geometry problems ....

... I ended up getting the Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD (also highly recommended), and using that to adjust the picture settings - now the color looks great (hue is set to +20 - that's how far into red the standard setting is). My wife and I both prefer the (bluish) red phosphor that Toshiba uses to the (orangish) one Sony uses (we were both fans of Mitsubishis when they still made direct views). There is a downside to all of this - it shows how variable the quality of our cable signal is.

This set also doesn't make the huge "WHUNG..." sound the Sony made when you turned it on. And while the bezel around the screen is still too wide for my tastes (and silver to boot), it looks downright small next to the Sony, which was too wide AND too tall AND silver.

The only thing I wish this set had is the multiple user adjustable video settings that the Sony and other brands have. This set has only one user adjustable setting - the others (Standard, Movie, Sports) are locked in presets. In fact, if you make the mistake of trying to adjust one of the presets, it will automatically replace your user adjustable settings with the ones you are adjusting, so it's not a bad idea to write your settings down somewhere so you can recover them.

All in all, I'm very happy with the set. It's not perfect - as I mentioned in the review title, I'd give it a 4.5 if I could. But as the deficiencies have to do with features and configuration rather than performance, giving it a 4 would be damning it with faint praise, so 5 it is.

Closest to an HDTV you'll find

It's simple. The latest Consumer Reports review on TV's (spring 2003) gave this TV a rating close to the ones reserved for the HDTV group. Not even the Sony had a picture as good as this one. If you go to the electronic stores, take a good look at this tv and compare it to others. But there's a trick you need to watch out for!

The big stores have all of the HDTV's & projection tv's in a darkend area, with the units at eye level and with a direct digital feed. They do this so that the projection and LCD units have a good picture as they tend to wash out under harsher lighting. They also give you plenty of room to step back and observe the picture form a distance (who ever watches a tv from 2-3 feet away!).
The standard tv's will be in their normal area, under harsh lights, on metal shelves and very little room between the isles. They also will usually have a standard, non-amplified feed. They get all the glare, may or may not be at eye level, have a feed that has been split 30 times (reducing the resolution) and you are looking at them from 3 feet away. The net result is that the HDTV's and others look lightyears ahead of all the others (with a price to match!!!). The regular tv's sometimes look worse than the 15 year old set you want to replace.

Take my (and Consumer Reports) word for it and you will be glad that you bought this set. The picture is unbelievable and at this price it is a huge value. You'll save between $100 - $200 over the electronic chains.

Gerat set - fantastic price. We got ours delivered from Amazon yesterday and we stayed up late just admiring the picture.

Oh - and it has great sound to - you'll love it!

Overrated

I am disappointed with the picture setting menu and the factory automatic reset feature, in particular. Why would contrast be set at 100% in stead of mid range. I find it necessary to continually adjust color, tint etc.as I move through channels. I have three other tv sets and none of them ever require fussing with the picture controls. Once I finaly get a combination that seems to provide consistant quality among channels, the set automatically goes back to factory reset if I try to change color temperature or picture preference, (sports, standard, etc.)

After some research

The set had the best picture in every store I looked at (still the best way to SEE the quality). The picture and sound quality are great and the input/output jacks service all kinds from the back of the set, plus a set of inputs on the front for a camera. Also, the speakers are in the front, not sides, for better sound in a wall unit. And it does weigh a ton!

Toshiba 26DF56 Widescreen ?

Yep sure is a widescreen crt ! What they do not tell you is on wide screen you loose about 3/4" top and bottom blacked out! Also remote can't be used in a dry house condition as it has to be reprogammed very often something to do with capicitors in remote! Was better off zooming my dvd player on my 27' JVC ! Picture is good on this model though !

Questions & Answers Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Question : Aspect ratio help with HDTV
We just got a new widescreen HDTV to replace our 20-year-old CRT. We have a standard definition dvr through DirecTV. When we set up the new TV, I chose to use an S-Video cable to connect it because its the highest-quality output on the dvr except for HDMI, which I have no desire to spend $40 on a new cable. I went into the dvr's settings and set it to 16:9 aspect ratio, and the TV's settings are set to automatically adjust the aspect ratio depending on what signal it's receiving (Btw it's a Toshiba 40RV525R, and it does work when I have my Wii in 16:9 format, connected using RGB component). But even after I set the aspect ratio on the dvr and checked to make sure the change was saved, the picture still had vertical bars on the sides, even when I was in the guide or a menu (so I know it wasn't just the program on at the moment). I even went to a channel that had programming on in widescreen, and it just gave me bars on all four sides. How do I fix this, and is it possible that I WILL need an HDMI cable to fix the problem

Answer:
Without an HD box (just watching SD) everything coming out of the DVR is in a 4:3 (1:1.33) format. Widescreen shows on non-HD programming are done in letterbox - this means black bars are added to the top and bottom of the 4:3 frame to show the widescreen material (this is when you are seeing black bars on all sides).Ideally you should have black bars on the side of regular programs (this is the original aspect ratio) if you don't want things to be stretched out of shape ('Natural' mode). But if you want it to be stretched out to fill the whole screen, push the 'PIC SIZE' button on your remote, till the mode says 'Full'. This will stretch the picture out horizontally to fill the screen.Whenever you see black bars on the top & bottom of a program, that is your clue that you are watching a program that is in letterbox. Push the 'PIC SIZE' button on the remote, till the mode says 'TheaterWide 2'. This is the mode for letterbox programs and will zoom in the picture, cutting off the black bars on the sides, top & bottom. Everything will be in the correct aspect (no stretching).Just don't forget to go back to 'Full' (if using stretching) or 'Natural' if you want the bars on the side, when you're done watching the letterbox program with 'TheaterWide 2' (other wise your picture will be cut off on the top & bottom). Also: It is normal to still see small bars on the top & bottom when watching a letterbox show in 'TheaterWide 2'. This is because some movies are wider than HD (cinemascope - 1:2.35, etc...).TheaterWide 1 & 3 are gimmicks and don't recommend using them. TheaterWide 1 stretches the picture out horizontally like 'Full' does but it does it unevenly (center less stretched than outer - fish bowl effect).TheaterWide 3 zooms in off-center for subtitles.

Question : Toshiba 40RV525R, or Samsung LN40B500- which is the better TV
They are both about the same price. What are the differences or features that would make one better than the other Also, if you have either of these, please comment on what you like or don't. Thanks

Answer:
I am not sure, but i deeply wouldn't suggest toshiba due to lack of support and quality..comment: do not buy insignia, weslinghouse, vizio, dynex, and toshiba.
