Love It

After already owning (and being quite satisfied) with a previous Toshiba Regza (42hl67) - when I decided to get a larger lcd, I certainly put Toshiba at the top of my list. I did some research on LG, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba and weighed the cons of each television that suited my preferences. The LG televisions I was comparing to this Toshiba have been known to have lip synch issues, while this particular Toshiba line has audio distortion problems over hdmi. I chose the Toshiba over the LG because I felt the lip synch problems with the LG would be more of a nuisance for me.

Sony and Samsung had good sets, but at a higher price, and they certainly didn't seem anymore immune to failure than Toshiba or LG. I'm sure some brands are more susceptible to breaking down, but just paying more for a television doesn't mean that it's going to last longer. I've owned my previous Toshiba for a little over 2 years without any major issues, so this of course had a big impact on my decision.

I purchased my TV from a local BB on sale. I purchased the insurance and my total with taxes was just over 1K. Reading some peoples' experiences who paid up to $2000 on other televisions and then have them break down in 3-6 months was a scary thought, so I paid a bit more for peace of mind.

On the 46xv645 itself:
The user interface is a mixed bag, very easy to change inputs, picture size, mostly due to the functionality of the remote. Digging through the menus is a different story, I have a lot patience with settings and will usually keep at it until I find what settings are useful to me. There is an abundance of color adjustments that I'd rather not deal with unless I have a proper calibration disc or other aid.
The picture quality after some rather basic adjustments is fantastic, at least compared to my previous Toshiba. Some settings such as noise reduction seem to work poorly with HD satellite channels, I turned both of the settings off. The Resolution+ setting also doesn't seem fit for HD channels, but I did use it at a low setting for gaming. At first it seemed that the extra 4 inches for this tv seemed like a bad thing for HD stations - I couldn't quite get as natural a picture as I was getting with my 42". After some more adjustments, this TV really does look a lot better than my first lcd.
The second day of owning the TV we experienced the dreaded audio issue over hdmi. Since I was aware of the issue and I based my purchase on many combined factors, I was disappointed but willing to put up with it. I can just use my surround system if the speakers get intolerable.
Gaming is fantastic on this TV, this (and I'm sure blu-ray as well) is where the TV really shines. I never experienced delayed reaction with my other Toshiba, and this one is no different.

Once this series (xv645) is unavailable, Toshiba will be stepping up to LED back-lit models. Many stores are already out of the 46xv645 and those that have them are probably low in stock. If the audio issue is not deal breaker for you, then this is really good tv to keep in mind if you are looking to getting a good sized lcd in the very near future.

VERY NICE HDTV

I purchased this from Buydig, great deal at about $790.
This TV is very light for the size, has a nice case design, great picture
and sound, lots of useful connectors in the back including 3 HDMI, one PC
input (the PC works great). The remote is simple but practical.
DVDs look sharp with my upscaling Teac system using the HDMI connection.
I decided for this model because it looked great in the store compared to the Samsungs,
LGs and other brands and because it is a BEST BUY according to Consumer Reports magazine.
I still have to try it with Netflix when I get my Roku box.

Excellent TV and Shipping

The TV performs equal to or better than the comments noted in other 5 star ratings. We have used the set with both Dish and DirecTV over the past few months and are impressed with the picture clarity in all formats from 480i to 1080i. We have not yet used it in the 1080p format.

Setup was easy since it was a replacement for a 32 inch Toshiba set. Amazon scheduled shipment originally for after Christmas, but the set became available much earlier and was received in early December. White Glove delivery was made exactly as scheduled, the set was installed, the deliverer made sure it was operating to our satisfaction, he gathered the boxes, cleaned up, and was attentive to our requests throughout.

We did learn in the setup process that the HDMI cable used on our 32 inch, 60hz set was inadequate for the 120hz set. Upon replacement with a category 2 cable, picture quality became flawless. Picture quality to the edge of the screen is uniform and there are no errant pixels anywhere on the screen.

Good Picture, Limited Options for Connecting through VGA

The TV looks nice and crisp. My xbox 360 was plug and play with no tweaking. DVDs and video games look great. The menus are mostly easy to use, though I hardly changed anything out of the box. I like the ability to label inputs or even have the TV skip unused inputs. Viewing photos off a USB drive is very intuitive and easy. There are tons of connection options, even one (seemingly rare) s-video port.

My only disapointment is the VGA port. For some reason, it does not allow resolutions higher than 1280x1080 to be viewed (as listed in the manual), leaving garish black bars on the side of the screen. Worse, the normal zoom function that can be used when watching TV or HDMI sources doesn't work as well with the VGA port. It only lets you stretch the image horizontally instead of "zooming" in, so even if you change your computer to output a widescreen format, you can't get it to fill the screen. A bargin basement Insigna I've used takes full 1080 inputs just fine. If you plan on connecting a computer to a VGA port, look somewhere else or plan on upgrading your video card to output DVI andusing a DVI-HDMI cable (something I cannot do with my laptop).

This is not related to the product, but I got my TV shipped by CEVA Logistics and it was the worst delivery experience I've had. Delivery took more than a week longer than estimated and was not white glove. Once I hooked everything up myself, I noticed that the box was taped together and the manual and remote were missing (thanks to Toshiba for providing free replacements), leading me to believe CEVA destroyed the packaging, lost the contents, and took a week covering up their mistake before getting it to me. I would have rathered paid the sales tax and bought from a brick and mortar store instead of dealing with them. My rating doesn't reflect my shipping experience.

Not sure where the smell comes from

The picture quality is pretty good.
The sound is acceptable without any sound system.
But it has a plastic/electronic smell that I am always a little worried some circuits got shorted and burning. First I thought it was because of the new-set smell thing. But after a month, the smell is still there. So I am not sure.

Great TV!!!

This is one fantastic TV! I have had it for about a month now and have enjoyed every minute. The picture is sharp (really deep blacks) and the 120Hz technology really does make a difference. I was amazed at the lack of pixelation, especially when watching sports and blu-rays. I bought this and a sony bdp 350 from Amazon Warehouse Deals (both open box units) and each has performed beautifully. They shipped free and INCREDIBLY fast. I cannot recommend this product enough.

As good for less, Toshiba has out done itself again!!

2nd Toshiba tv, have never been as happy as I was with this purchase....saved $400 instead of Sony or Samsung and got a 120hz hdtv that rivals the performance of the biggest brands!! I researched tv's for months and you can't go wrong with this one.....

Excellent Value

This set is performing well. The white glove delivery set it up and all I had to do was set back and enjoy. Wasn't sure about ordering a television of this size online, but I would have no hesitation about ordering anything of this size again. My sister had bought a 42 inch Toshiba Regza from a store and I bought this 46 inch unit at less cost than her purchase. The set has excellent picture and the sound is better than I expected. The menu is simple to navigate and make any changes you may want to tweak.....I would recommend this set to anyone looking for a good price verses performance.

Toshiba 46XV540U is great!!

I purchased the Toshiba 46XV540U at my favorite volume wherehouse store for $1199 one week ago. I originally planned on buying a Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma, but after discussing Plasma panels with some video engineers at work, I was NOT convinced that it would be free from image retention (burn-in), especially since I watch a lot of 4:3 programming and I didn't want to lay awake at night worrying about having left-right bars burned into the screen. Then I set my mind on either a Sony W4100 or Z4100, but my local wherehouse only had a 40" Sony. The 46" cost too much. I settled on a Sony because I own a Sony 55" SXRD, which I find stunning, and as good as any Plasma or LCD, and it's 120Hz and 1080p/24 display. Then I saw the Toshiba, which stated that it had similar specs as my SXRD. After obsessing and doing extensive research, I decided to buy the Toshiba. I was hesitant since I really liked what I saw on the Sony LCDs. Out of the box, the Toshiba looked good, but the levels needed to be toned down. I initially used a THX DVD (any DVD that is THX certified, like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc), and the disc has a THX setup menu that will help you adjust any TV to look pretty darn good. Later I used the Video Essentials DVD for further adjusting. After setting the color, tint, brightness and contrast, I couldn't be happier. One of my biggest necessities of any HDTV is that it displays SD (standard def) channels well, and I'm happy to say that this Toshiba does a great job. HD on my Charter cable looks stunning in 1080i. Blu-Ray is jaw-dropping. I also watch a lot of sports and the 120Hz option looks great, and from what I've read in test reports, the Toshiba handles this better than Sony, and I condider the Sony better than Samsung for this. Anyways, the Toshiba colors are excellent, it gives deep blacks, I don't see any pixel blurring or lag and fast motion on sports looks rock-solid. AND, this 46" Toshiba cost about $500 less than a similar-sized Sony. The speakers in the Toshiba give satisfactory audio, especially for my bedroom, where I have this set. The image looks pretty good even at extreme angles. The screen is matte-finish, which is essential in my opinion to control reflections. The bezel of the Toshiba is gloss black. I would have preferred a satin-black bezel, but no problem. The Toshiba remote is well laid out. I recently owned a Toshiba 50" CRT rear projection set and I loved the remote on that set because of two things: 1) Mute does a half-mute first, then a full mute with a second press. Half-mute allows you to turn down the TV if answering a phone but you can still hear the sound. 2) The Channel Return will actually return you to a previous Input. So, if you are watching a DVD then switch to a cable channel to check out a football score, you can immediately return to the DVD by pressing the RTN button without the need of it bringing up the numerical menu or cycling through the Input options to get back to the DVD. This new Toshiba remote keeps these two great functions!! The 46RV540U is a terrific TV!

Worth the price!

I've purchased refurbished items in the past and have always had good luck with them. Though with this item I was a bit worried since it is my most expensive refurbed! Let me say that I wasn't disappointed at all! Item was totally brand new and it had tons of features.

I'm still playing around with the settings but even the defaults look nice!

Audio and video display are crystal clear! Especially watching last Sundays SuperBowl!

Cinema Series Regza 1080p Full HD LCD

Customer Review :

No problems, excellent value for the money.

Like many of the other reviewers I did some research, and for the technology, this tv is an excellent value. Setup and use is easy, and the picture quality is excellent for all types of input(relative to the type of input)and good sound also. Been using it for just short of 2 months, with no problems. We we are happy with it so far.

If you hook up a blu ray player to it, or any 120hz tv, be sure to check that the blu ray player is configured to send the correct signal to the tv for the fast refresh. The blu ray player we bought was set to default to the lower refresh rate.

Best Bang for Buck vs Sony/Samsung

Pros -
Picture is outstanding, easily on of the the best 46" out there. Premium LCD screen at a budget price. Color is off out of the box. Factory settings for green are oversaturated, skintones have a green shade to them. You have to adjust the green in (-13,-11,+7)COLOR MASTER, Color Temp (Medium),(-10)G DRIVE to get it under control, took me some effort but I got them just right without paying for professional calibration.(Don't get Best Buy to do it, they have no clue what they are doing). SRT works pretty good, it won't turn SD into HD but it improves the picture. I left my SRT on Mode 3 Level 1(it has 5 levels of SRT processing in 3 modes-15 deifferent settings), most of the people complaining probably have no clue. Too much SRT will make the picture terrible. SRT will be disabled if you have a 1080p/1080i video source. If you have an upconverting DVD player you need to disable it to get SRT to work. Have not observed artifacts in the 120Hz smooth mode like can be seen on the Samsungs.

Cons -
Don't like the menus on the screen. Don't like the remote. A power outage caused my HDMI settings to be messed up(orange screen - really weird). Sent an e-mail to Tech Support and got the problem resolved, unplug TV and video source from the wall for 5-10 min to reset it. Color controls in Color Master allow for +/- 30, but using anything more +/- 15 will introduce artifacts into the picture, at 30 the picture will be unwatchable. Other then that not much problems.

Excellent LCD HDTV

We bought this [46"] TV from a big box store in June. We were looking at plasmas, but the reflection problem was a show-stopper for our family room. The Toshiba has no reflection problem day or night. The picture is beautiful. You'll wonder how you lived with your CRT. No jaggies from the usual sources, though some from some 24p movies. Color balance was perfect on delivery; we haven't played with it. We watch from 10-15 feet away, but the picture is clear and bright from 20 feet. Watching from the side.. 45 degrees, there is no distortion. The images are very good in the daytime and awesome at night with the lights turned down. We ultimately bought the 46" size, but in hindsight, I think the larger version (52"?) would have been better, tho more expensive.

The Toshiba has half a dozen aspect ratio options, all available on the remote. We found to our dismay, that a lot of cable/broadcast TV, while digital, is still in the conventional 4:3 format; essentially a square picture with black bars on the side. Forcing it into a wide screen display distorted the images, so we mostly watch channels that broadcast in HD widescreen.

The multi-function remote is complex, but once you get used to it, the necessary controls are easy to manipulate via an on-screen display. It's also lit, which is very helpful at night, when the lights are off. There is also a limited set of controls on the TV itself in case the remote conks out. We weren't looking for that, but it was nice to find.

It has more connections than you'll likely need including multiple HDMI, component, composite, PC, even a USB slot. We have cable coming into the component (Y, Pb, Pr) connection, DVD/Blu-ray through S-video, and PS3 through conventional composite connections. The Toshiba has its own digital audio out connection (Dolby), but there are lots of ways to hook up an external audio source. It sits pretty low on its own stand, so you don't see the cables coming out of the back.

The Toshiba has its own sort of 3d/stero sound system, so audio sounds like it's coming from the side, even though the speakers are just on the bottom. A nice touch -- hard to appreciate looking at the specs.

Some of the reviews mentioned that the shiny frame was a drawback. We found no problem from the frame. It's pretty narrow, anyway. Reviews also warned that store displays would have the brightness turned up, but we didn't find the image much different when we got it home. The Toshiba name on the bottom is lit, but it dims depending on the light in the room.

It's an excellent unit. It seemed when we were looking, that each brand/model TV had some sort of limitation in one of the specs, usually in the number or type of connections; or it was too expensive. There are no limitations on the Toshiba and it's a great price.

Signicantly improved from 2 years ago

I will list the improvements I noted from a 47" Toshiba LCD TV I purchased a little over 2 years ago. My existing components (Sony DVD/VHS Recorder, an analog VHS/DVD player & a Blu Ray DVD player (brand new) were moved over to the new TV.
1. Sound levels are now the same when I move from different input sources, including outside anteena. Previously, it was a mess (all different) and for the standard DVD player I had to increase the volume by 50-70% to nearly the maximum sound level. Previously, I blamed the components. Nothing worst than watching a DVD and switching to check sports scores and being blasted away by sound.
2. Location of the HDMI connections on the back are much improved. The older TV had the inputs in the hardest to reach, worst possible location.
3. In the older TV, picture quality from an extreme side angle was blurry and unwatchable, now the picture quality is great from any angle.
4. The oversized remote control is a tad smaller by doing away the mode select buttons. I used them, but won't miss them. It's thinner, weighs less, but the buttons are the same size and same number. It is just better designed.
5. Trust me that the stand is better.
6. Picture quality is better and fast action scenes are flawless.
It seems like Toshiba did a really good job with these major improvements as well as some minor improvements I didn't mention.
My only complaint is that I wished there was a "CC" closed caption button on the remote like there was on my really old analog TV set. Instead, you have to pull out the manual to figure it out. Usually, I say the heck with it and hence I never learn.
If you are a first time buyer, be happy that you waited until now to buy. You are getting a better TV for less.

Toshiba 46XV545U Regza 46" LCD TV

I researched 46" LCD TV's for six months before buying. My first choice was a Samsung but I couldn't overlook the price difference. My purchase of the Toshiba was the best choice I could have made. This is one of the best TV's I have ever seen. Shipping was free and arrived in less than 5 days. The UPS driver even helped me carry it into the house. Setup was easy. I was watching HD TV in less than 30 minutes. If I were to buy again, this seller would be my first choice.

Answer:
For the price No.For $700, you can get a computer that is much much MUCH better. The specs in that computer should end up costing you about $400 max. I actually think that same laptop is $400 on Best Buy's website, and if not it's a much better model. In short, it's not a good deal. For $700 you can find a much better laptop.
