Best TV Ever

We bought this tv in 1999 at Best Buy on sale for $749. It still has the same sharp picture it had ten years ago. I love this tv but I'm afraid at this rate I will never get an LCD tv. I wish all electronics were made this well.

Reliability

We purchased the Toshiba TV, Model CV36V51, because of the quality of the picture in the retail area. However after about 18 months, the picture went blank. The sound was present and menus items showed up as good as usual. I discovered that if the the brightness was adjusted to maximum, I would get a temporary picture as good as ever. After a time the picture would become hazy and substancial darker for a period of time but would then revert back to an excellent picture. The picture would operate in the temporary status only when the menus items Color Temperature was adjusted to COOL and the Picture Perference was in the (Memory) status. In addition to the above, the set would become blank and the red on light indicator would begin to flash and the remote and other functions would not function. One would think a TV set costing this much would last longer than 18 months (have had TV's that have lasted over 13 years.

Conclusion: I must pay a service fee or carry a 200 pound TV to the repair shop.

Recommendation: If you elect to purchase this TV, you best entertain the purchase the $200 extended warranty plan.

Great Clarity - Poor Color

I bought this unit recently (actually the V61 model, which is the same tube) and returned it because of the poor color. I'm not going to go into details here, but if you're interested, read my review on audioreview.com under the V61 unit.

Basically, the tube is incapable of producing a white color - it's pink instead. If you watch a hockey game, you'll see what I mean. The ice is pink. Look at the unit in a store and compare it to, say a nearby Sony or JVC - you'll see the pink tone in the Toshiba. What's worse - you can't adjust the pink out of the picture. Adjusting the tint control just makes everything green.

I like Toshiba as a brand, but their large direct-view TV tubes are poor (32" & 36"). However, the clarity is EXCELLENT. The clarity impresses you in the store enough to buy the set, until you get it home and all the flesh tones are pink. I adjusted the controls to no avail and even bought a DVD disc specifically for setting the sharpness, brightness, color and tint, but it didn't help.

I thought I had a bad set until I looked at all the other sets at the store. Again, if you're interested, read my review on audioreview.com ... COMPARE THE COLOR BEFORE YOU BUY THIS SET!

Had this TV for over 4 years now...Excellent

We bought this TV in December of 1999 and have never been sorry. We wanted a 36" set with component video inputs and over 800 lines of resolution, and this one fit the bill. (When we bought it, only the Sony WEGA at $1600 had component inputs.) This is an excellent set which has served us beautifully for over 4 years. If only I could say the same thing about the DVD player we bought at the same time....

The picture is stunning, sharp with accurate color, the sound is quite good (I always use the stereo for movies), and as I said, the quality is top notch. My degree is video production and I'm very picky about picture quality. I've never been disappointed.

It is a big beast, but on an entertainment center with wheels its not a problem for us (except when we moved.) The Amazon red carpet service delivery was absolutely worth it.

my first amazon purchase

I couldn't believe how easy it was to shop at home, you can shop and compair all of the high-def sets. The Toshiba 37" was perfect for the space I had, most other brands offered 32" or 40" screens, one too small the other too big. The picture is amazing, you have to see it to believe it. It was easy to set up, my cable was high-def ready. Every step of the order was as promised, the set was delivered on time in perfect condition. I would recommend Toshiba high-def to anyone who wants to be blown away by the new age of television, you won't believe your eyes.

Everything we expected!

We researched at length prior to purchasing. And this was the first time we had purchased anything this dollar value online or at Amazon. I must say we are very pleased with both Amazon (One Call) and this Toshiba product. The TV arrived via standard shipping slightly ahead of schedule and was packaged quite securely. Hook up and start were a breeze. We're very pleased to date!

Pretty nice, BUT...

I've owned this set for several months, and some things are really beginning to annoy me. For one, it takes entirely too long to change channels by selecting the channel number on the remote. Also, the volume change slider graphics and most of the other, very clumsy to operate, menu stuff stays on the screen for at least 5 seconds, and covers a fair amount of the bottom of the screen. Believe me, this becomes too long after a while. The remote control sensitivity is the poorest of any TV I have ever owned, it needs to be pointed EXACTLY at the receiver spot on the TV in order to function. The sound is pretty weak, but it can be connected to an external amp and speakers. Only one RF cable connection provided, so on-air programming via rabbit ears must utilize external A-B switch. Picture seems good quality, but the set overall is lacking in anything but the cheapest consumer interface and conveniences. Finally, worst of all, my analog cable system does not broadcast ANY HD programming. HD programming, I later found out, costs an additional $25/month, a total of $75/month without any movie channels. My rabbit ear reception, with 3 different rabbit ear units, was very poor, very snowy, requiring me to install a roof antenna. The on-air tuner seems very insensitive. I live about 15 miles from the on-air TV antennas.
DVD viewing, on the other hand is very good. But, be aware of what you are getting. Even better, of what you are NOT getting with this set. If you are buying an HDTV to watch HD on your cable system, you may be just wasting your money.

Excellent Analog TV

2004 model of last year's 27A33 which received rave reviews. Quality TV with high end features at an outstanding price ($229.00 at Best Buy)-bought to replace 27" Sony 2 months ago while waiting for the 2006 HDTV situation to evolve. Picture quality and clarity are excellent; colorstream component video produces HDTV quality DVD's and highly recommend purchasing component video cables; sound/stereo quality is adequate/good but a non-issue as this TV is running through Onkyo/Polk stereo system for theater quality sound. Highly recommend.

For those needing a mid-sized CRT...

needed a 32" CRT in 2009, found this at a yard sale - 5 year old CRT with a proprietary high contrast picture.

My Nintendo Wii, PS2, Pioneer laserdisc player (for the ORIGINAL Star Wars in glorious anamorphic digital widescreen), PS2 for DVD playback - all of these just do not look good on an HDtv, even with the Wii 420p cable. So we need a decent-sized CRT TV in a digital age...

i highly recommend this TV (gotten at a yard sale after sitting for 5 years). the high contrast picture is more than fine for my DVD movies that are not worth it on blu-ray due to bad transfers: Butch Cassidy, We Were Soldiers, the Firefly set. Plus - I have a lot of Johnny To, John Woo, and other Chinese films that haven't made it to blu-ray yet - not to mention Saving Private Ryan and the LOTR trilogy.

the menu is bare bones, and you definitely need the manual AND REMOTE in case you accidentally lock out channels or video inputs. don't worry, toshiba sells the remote off of its website.

the picture is great (will use the Avia home theater disc to calibrate it eventually), and the twin speakers are fine - this would've been a decent TV back in the day.

Excellent picture and great price

I bought this TV to replace a 25 inch Magnavox in my bedroom. Space was a critical issue as my stand would only accept a certain footprint.

I put the Toshiba in and attached my satellite receiver to it by the S-video cable and away we went. Great, bright picture that is very clear and sharp. I am not using the speakers as I have a JVC receiver and small 3-way speaker system in the room.

In any event, an excellent buy. I paid $229 at Best Buy. The Toshiba brand is known for durability. I own four now and have had problems with none of them...

Questions & Answers Powered by Yahoo! Answers
Question : The order of the component cables on the back of my TV (Toshiba 37" HDTV)
Hi, I have a unique problem here. I want to plug in a component cable into the back of my Toshiba, but it is permanently affixed to the wall. I dont feel like going through 25 possible combinations so could someone tell me the order that the cables would go into the TV in order from top to bottom (I assume it's standardised.) Thank you.

Answer:
Try this:Plug the green wire into a source and fire it up. This carries the actual video signal in black and white.Try all 3 inputs on the TV with the other end of the green wire. Stop when you get a picture.Plug the other 2 wires into your source and now you have only 2 other wires to plug in. One way will be perfect, the other way will look funny.
