Breaks way too soon - designed to break?

I bought 2 of these TVs in July 2007. Both have a gorgeous picture, but the 52 inch failed in Nov. 2009. Turns out the capacitors are under-powered and inferior quality. Shame on Samsung for trying to save a few pennies! Because it was out of warranty, the rip off repair shop charged over [...] to replace 5 capacitors. Now I'm having the same problem with the 40 inch. I tried removing the circuit board and replacing 3 obviously blown capacitors, but that didn't fix the problem. Now I'm toying with ordering a new power supply board.

Help may be available through this law firm: [...]. I suggest everyone having this problem contact this firm.

While Samsung can design a fantastic product, they ruin it by using inferior parts. Buyer beware.

Power supply problem : Don't buy samsung again

On Powering ON, it keeps clicking for 3 mins and then turns on. Has verical lines on Screen.
Turning off and On solves the issue. This started happening after 2 years when warranty is over.
Everyone is reporting the problem.

Great TV and outstanding response when repair was necessary

I purchased this TV because of the many reviews noting excellent picture quality and competitive price. I was not disappointed. Additionally Amazon's delivery service was excellent. After 2 years and well beyond the expiration of the warranty period the TV began to show signs of failure. Before it was 3 years old it did fail. Under these circumstances a five star rating may be overly generous but Samsung's response was very impressive. I used an email link from their web site to describe my problem and simply ask if they ever covered the cost of repairs for out of warranty problems. That was a Saturday night. By Sunday morning there was a response - Samsung was arranging for a local repair service to contact me and by Wednesday in-home service was completed at no cost to me. I can't imagine a better response and I particularly appreciated Samsung's honesty in the reply to my email: "We are getting many complaints from customers that their LCD TV just keeps clicking and won't turn on, OR it is taking more time to turn on." I would have expected a much slicker response that didn't so openly admit to a problem. Bravo Samsung - such honesty is rare.

After two years...disaster....and now an update...

CANNOT BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF CONSUMERS WHO HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER TWO YEARS.
COULD NOT POWER ON, TRIED EVERYTHING!
IF WE COULD GET IT ON, WE COULDN'T TURN IT OFF FOR FEAR IT WOULD NOT WORK.
THEN, THE WORST OF IT, WON'T POWER ON AT ALL AND WE CANNOT TURN IT OFF!

FOLLOW UP:
CALLED SAMSUNG A NUMBER OF TIMES WITHIN A FEW DAYS...ON HOLD, DISCONNECTED, COULD NOT FIND A SUPERVIOSR, NO TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS. KEPT AT IT, AND THE ANSWER...THE TV FALLS OUT OF THE PRODUCTION RANGE THAT SAMSUNG WILL ADDRESS. YES, THEY UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A CAPACITOR PROBLEM. A SERVICE TECH WILL CONTACT US WITHIN A FEW DAYS TO SET UP AN APPT...WITH NO REDUCTION IN FEE OR REPAIR SERVICE!
TRIED TO APPEAL THEIR POLICY IN A STRONG BUT NICE WAY, CITING BACKUP FACTS....SO SORRY...CORPORATE POLICY...THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR US!

NOW FOR THE UPDATE....WE WERE PREPARING TO PURCHASE A NEW TV, THEN STUMBLED UPON A SITE ON YOU TUBE THAT TEACHES YOU HOW TO REPLACE THE CAPCITORS. THEN SEARCHED FOR AND FOUND A SITE ON LINE THAT SOLD THE CAPICTORS AS ADVISED. IF YOU ARE REASONABLY HANDY, YOU CAN REPLACE THEM TOO. THE JOB COST US APPROXIMATELY $22, SHIPPING BEING THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART OF THE DEAL! THE TV WORKS LIKE BRAND NEW!

Complete Failure

Just do a search for problems with these LCD's. Its obvious that Samsung knows/should know that there is a major problem with this TV that culminates in complete failure. Don't Buy.

Good TV - WHEN IT WORKS

This unit is great, but expect to replace capacitors within a few months. A common problem (Just Google "LN-T4061F clicking") in which the TV will not turn on and will emit clicking sounds, sometimes for hours. Unless your unit is under warranty, Samsung will not remedy this widely-known issue. Fix it yourself for about $10, or a few hundred for a technician.

Planned Obsolescence

I bought this just when it came out and the TV was pretty good while it was under its warranty. There were some issues with the sound where the speakers muffled and the volume on different channels would sometimes be astoundingly higher than others. But none of that really bothered me too much, if you want a nice HDTV you should probably pony up for surround sound anyways. The thing that really irks me is the cheap capacitors that Samsung used, which all blew out one month after the warranty expired. Now when I try to turn the TV on, it clicks for a few minutes with the red light blinking and when it finally powers on, I get a picture filled with blue and purple pixels. This is the same issue that has been documented by thousands of other owners of this TV online. Just do a quick Google search.

WARNING DO NOT BUY SAMSUNG TVs :designed to breakdown after using it for 1 year

I purchased this TV for my office and never used it for one year because no one at the office had time to watch TV. We started using it occasionally during lunch time/ breaks for 1 year, it started making clicking sounds when we tried to turn it on. I called samsung and they asked for model number and when I told them they immediately responded by offering to repair one time for free. They took my information and told me service tech will contact me to schedule a repair. No one called for one month. I called again and they said they assumed I had fixed the problem myself. When I told them I had this problem with TV, they were very familiar with it and again took down my information. Do I think they will fix my TV by next month?
Well all I can say is SAMSUCK!

Still a great Picture!

This TV has given me nothing but enjoyment. I got it for a great price 2 years ago and it's still going strong. So far I've only noticed 2 dead pixels after 2 years of mass usage. The only semi-bad thing I can say is the audio quality while playing DVDs or Blu-Rays isn't the best. The sharpness and brightness of the screen is still going strong. Great TV.

happy again

With some trepidation, we ordered this tv from Amazon in January 2008. We received it quickly and with no problems whatsoever. Great service from Amazon and we fell in love with the television. It was easy to install and set up, looked fantastic and had a great picture. Our love affair continued until January 2010 when it started clicking on and off several times before staying on. I checked the internet and sure enough, there appeared to be a common problem with the capacitors. We were very unhappy to have a problem with a 2year old tv. We called Samsung customer service and they issued a repair order for a local service person to come check the tv. They said if the problem was capacitors, they would handle the cost. The repair personnel came on the 3rd day, put in a new board and left. Problem solved. We are extremely happy with the support we received from Samsung and it makes us feel better about the Samsung refrigerator that we purchased in November 2009.

Editorial Review :

For people looking to step up to full 1080p resolution in a 46-inch flat-panel LCD, Samsung's 2007 model LNT4661FF is a good choice. Besides offering full 1080p resolution the LNT4661F also features a 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for rich blacks and subltle texture display, an 8ms response time panel for smooth motion, hidden side speakers, an NTSC tuner, and 3 HDMI ports.

Compared to other Samsung Models
The primary differences between Samsung's LNT4661F and the step-up LNT4665F LCD HDTV is in the contrast ratio and video processing power. The pricier LNT4665F offers a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio compared to this model's 10,000:1 ratio, and also offers full 10bit video processing over this model's 8 bit system. The more expensive model should display finer gradients of shading making for more detail in darker scenes. The video processing difference should ensure smoother motion in fast moving scenes for the LNT4065F.

Video Processing
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

Connections

  • HDMI (version 1.3): 3 (1 CEC cabaple)
  • Component video: 2 (Y, Pb, Pr)
  • S-Video input: 1 side/1 rear
  • A/V inputs: 1 side/1 rear
  • PC inout: 1
  • Headphone Jack: 1
  • USB 2.0: 1

Audio Features
High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass through hidden side speakers. TruSurround XT audio adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

What's in the box: Samsung LNT4661F 46-inch 1080P LCD TV, remote control, 2 AAA batteries, Power Cord, cleaning cloth, owners manual, warranty card.

Don't buy this t.v.!

I have the same problem with the horizontal lines going across the screen and the blurry picture that I keep reading about all over the internet. The tv is not even 2 years old. It is out of warranty. Samsung doesn't care that it is an obvious defect. They said they don't pay attention to what people on the internet say about their products. I was going to pay to have it fixed but after reading reviews from people that have done this it sounds like a bad idea. So I am going to buy either the Sony LED t.v. or the sony LCD XBR t.v. and just accept the fact that I threw away [...] on a piece of junk t.v. that lasted less than 2 years

Do NOT buy this TV!!

This TV started giving us trouble a few months out of warranty. We tried to get it fixed with no luck. It shows 4 horizontal lines on the screen and ghosting of images on the right side. After 30 minutes it warms up and reverts to normal. And I find multiple accounts of this exact problem listed on the web. (in addition to others) What a waste of money, this cost too much month to be trouble free for not even two years. I personally am rethinking Samsungs in general.

DO NOT BUY THIS TV

I purchased this TV 18 months ago thru Amazon, it is now broken (picture failed) and out of warranty. This TV got rave reviews from many sites in the beginning but if you do your research you will find hundreds of complaints that this TV fails about 1 year to 18 months in - which is naturally outside of warranty and Samsung refuses to acknowledge the problem! Unless you always pruchase an extended warranty with Samsung I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS COMPANY AGAIN as I just threw away $1700.00!!!

Will never buy SAMSUNG again!

We purchased this tv just a little over two years ago and just like EVERYONE else had a problem with the tv cycling to turn itself on. After two weeks of this getting increasingly worse, it just would not turn on at all. THANKS to some message boards I found we saved ourselves 500+ dollars by going to radio shack and for under 10.00 got replacement parts and fixed it ourselves.
However, due to Samsungs lack of acknowledgement of this issue that encompasses so many of their models and the companies unwillingness to offer any assistance, I can assure you we will never buy another SAMSUNG.
I will add a link to the message boards where we found the fix.

Bad power supply after 2 years of use

I purchased the Samsung LN-T4661F from Amazon in September 2007. Delivery and setup were fine. The picture (once it is running) is still great. I bought the unit because it is supposed to be best at up converting standard DVDs (I have lots of DVD movies). About six months ago, the unit began to have a delayed start. First about 30 seconds, now about 90 seconds. Sometimes with a slight rose tinted background. Turning the set off and back on clears the rose background. Searching on-line I have found this model has numerous bad power supplies (hence causing slow turn on and many times for others sudden turn offs or no power at all). I got on Samsung's site last night and did troubleshooting and a request for a service call (out of warranty) but the lengthy request was rejected at the end and I was taken to the trouble shooting screen as a response. Bad response to a bad problem. one star is too high for durability. I had a ten year old Hitachi projection TV I gave to my step son when we got the Samsung. The Hitachi is still running with no service calls ever.

Question : Power Supply
I am very interested in updating my power supply from abour 250 watts to 350 or 400 watts .. I would like to know what companies are good for power supplies and if Dynex is a good companny to trust ....i would also like to know if life when upgrading the video card the power supply has slot that have to fit into your computer .....I will upgrade the power supply for a video card ..

Answer:
I personally like Enermax power supplies, but Antec also makes very good power supplies. One way to tell if it is a good power supply is how much it weighs. Generally the cheap ones are really light. I have never heard of Dynex and a power supply is one thing you never want to cheap out on because, they have the potential to take out your motherboard, ram, processor etc. if they go out. Also you will get instabilities, because some of the cheap ones might say 450 watt max, but what that means is that is the most the power supply will push out and it may only be pushing out 380 watts 95% of the time.

Question : How can I modify a computer power supply to use for powering a solderless breadboard for projects
I'm trying to use a surplus computer power supply to use on my breadboard for projects but I can't figure out how to get it to sense an action to power up. I'm trying to not go out and buy a regulated power supply from Fry's for $30-50. I probably have like 4 power supplies laying around, so I'm just trying to put them to use instead of throwing them out. Or, Where do I go on-line to talk to someone find that kind of information

Answer:
You would have to set up some kind of switch for the power supply to get it to turn on when you wanted it to.Generally, it is the 3rd pin on one row of pins and the 4th pin on the other row. This would be a green colored wire and a black colored wire.Just do a google search for what you are looking to do, there are plenty of people who use computer power supplies for just such a thing.Try http://www.hackaday.com
