Got it, Love it, Go get yourself one.

After reading reviews about this tv before purchase,
and even though I wasnt sure about going with Philips,
(I'm partial to Toshiba/Samsung)
I got this HDTV, and after owning it for 1 week.
I AM HAPPY AND ITS SUPER CLEAR, COLORS ARE GREAT, HD Content Looks amazing.
I upgraded to this from a 34inch Toshiba CRT HDTV so I'm not new to the HDTV world. I also have my Xbox360 connected to this over component, and its putting out 1080p to the tv, and my cable tv is connected over HDMI.
Everything looks great. I watched Prison Break, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Lots of HD on HDNet, and I can say without to much settings tweaking that everything looks great.
No motion blur, no ghosting, just visual pleasure. There is a built in setup wizard with some HD pictures to help adjust your picture settings when you first setup the tv, and they help alot. I noticed though I did need to set the contrast down to about 60%
and that was fine.

I'm happy, I love it, I would totally recommend it.
For the price you cant beat it.

Also this week its on sale at Target for roughly 850$ so I am going to wal mart during my lunch break to tell them to credit me back 50$ for price matching. (week of 11/16/08 to 11/22/08)

The only one that fit on our mantel with the stand - excellent!

I picked this one because the specs are excellent for the low price range and it has 4 HDMI inputs with plenty of other kinds too. The spec that sold it was the depth on stand. It fits nicely on our 11" mantel and allowed us to put off mounting it. The picture is better than I expected for SD from a sat. box. Off the air HD is awesome with regular rabbit ears and I never imagined the local PBS stations would each have 3 or 4 different channels. Incredible! Watched penguins diving in the Antactic tonight and it was crystal-freaking-clear. I can't wait to switch to HD programming through the sat. company. Will need an upgrade of the DVR to an HD one too.

Bottom line. Love it - love it - love it!

Lots for little

Bought this Philips TV as we were looking for a LCD 42" set without breaking the bank. There are those who would want more in a TV I am sure. These are the same folks who want more in anything they buy. But for the cost of this set, we are very happy with the easy of setup, the quality of the picture and the many options of connecting external devices.
We studied for weeks about the different TV's and what they had to offer. Studied so much that we became more confused. Doing some research on this model, we felt very comfortable buying it. It now has been in the house for a couple of weeks with out any problems or disappointments. The only thing we did do was to make some of our own adjustments after using the quick set up guide.

For the price, it is very hard to beat.

Philips, the Chevy of electronics.

Philips 42PFL3603D/F7 42-Inch 1920 x 1080p LCD HDTV (Black)
Ive been partial to Philips video products for years. I guess since their Magnavox partnership over 10 years ago. I'm no audio/videophile so this is a real world layman's terms review. The tv is a good size for a living room or large bedroom. I'd like to think of these as the widescreen version of a 32"-35" TV. The picture is crisp and the colors are rich. Veiwing angles are really not a prob w LCDs and this unit is no exception. It was a 20 min. put together from box to movie night. The quick setup option on the TV is nicde but i suggest taking the time and personalizing for a much nicer picture quality. Speakers are ok, but not for movie night(my opinion), surround sound fixes this. There's plenty of inputst(4 HDMI,1 S-Video, 4 sets of RCA inputs for DVD, Blue-Ray, Cable Satalite , VHS, and gamming systems.. *** Biggest problem is that there's only (1) audio output which is digital coax (RCA Jack) so if you've got an older home theater surround system you'll have to run your audio direct from players/game systems instead of through the TV. The bottom line for me was the under $1,000 price. I was able to get my 42" LCD at Target w/1 HDMI cable, 3 DVD and 1 Blue Ray for $965 with openning a Target credit acct.. You can't beat Philips value-to-quality. And because Philips is a division of LG their technology is up to par. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their larger tube sets or looking for a 'utility' television in the living room.

Good TV, good price

I recently purchased this Philips 32" TV, and I am very pleased with my purchase. After looking at different models of 32" televisions available, the different brands and specs had me a little worried about making the right decision. However this TV has great picture, looks modern and stylish, has plenty of imputs, and is easy to use and program. It looks great for movies, games, and hd and regular TV programing, it even cleans up analog channels somewhat. I have also used a 32 inch samsung and I certainly could not say that it was is any better than this, in fact i think i prefer the philips. Also, as far as looking at specs when buying a tv, do not be worried if you are considering this television: considering its size and price range it is very competitive. I was a little worried about its 8ms response time considering samsung and some others have 6ms or even 4ms, but i cannot tell the difference and from what I have read there are differences between manufacturers when it comes to measuring such things; it also has a 26000 dynamic contrast ratio which is impressive i guess, but who really knows. The bottom line is this: picture looks great, movies look great, and video games look great, everything I needed from an HDTV; and it was easy to set up, just letting you select from different picutres to determine what type of settings you want. hope this was helpfull.

I am very happy with this tv!

Hi,
This is the 3rd hdtv lcd I have purchased this year but the 1st one I am happy with. I purchased a Samsung earlier this year after reading all the amazing reviews, maybe I was expecting too much but I felt disappointed when I had it at home. I then purchased the HP Media Smart 42" with the wifi, it is a nice lcd but it is way overpriced because of the useless wifi which is impossible to setup anyway. Took that right back to bestbuy the next day. Now for the Philips. I was debating whether to get the Sony Bravia L or this Philips. Even though this is more expensive I went with the Philips because of that gut feeling I had everytime I was disappointed with an lcd I told myself I should have got the Philips. Well I finally did and I am very happy with my purchase. I got it for $691 at Sams Club. As soon as it became available I ordered it. I have had it for 3 days now. As soon as I opened the box I liked the glass stand. The lcd itself has a very nice elegant minimalist design which I love. The remote is very simple I like it as well, one thing that would truly make it better would be some sort of backlight, but after a while I will memorize the location of the buttons anyway. When I plugged in all my equipment, just the cable box and the Cambridge Soundworks i765 which I use as my dvd player and external speakers for the lcd, I powered it on and it walked me thru the setup which is very simple. Instead of the usual numbers to calibrate the settings, it walks you thru sets of pictures, half of the screen one setting the other half the screen the other, you select which half you prefer, then the lcd knows what you prefer and it is all setup. It does the best job of analog of any of these newer hdtvs I have seen or had, that makes me very happy. It is also great for dvds and hdtv. All around and for the money it has me very happy. The reason I did not get the 42" is because for my room the 42" is just too big that is a big reason I returned the HP Mediasmart lcd besides that I realized that I overpaid for useless and complicated to setup wifi. So for anybody looking for a well priced lcd hdtv that is great for both analog and digital video this is a must buy television.

... BUT needs backlight controls

I purchased this from a club store for 600 shipped and we are satisfied with the picture quality, multiple input connections and attractive frame (edges has clear plastic surround).
I think the one thing that this unit needs is backlight controls, since
too much of backlight affected some images that contrast and brightness
cant fix. I have to use light sensor to fix the issue.

Very Disappointing

My wife and I have had an old Philips TV in our bedroom for some time. When we decided to go HD, we actually bought a Philips 47" for the family room--and loved it. So it seemed a good idea to buy another Philips to replace the one in the bedroom. Bad move.

I was really happy with the specs on this TV. No, it's not 1080, but for our bedroom, that's really OK. There are generous inputs for DVDs, satellite, Playstation, etc. It also looks nice, the stand swivels, which is great for the location we chose. And the picture is quite nice. DVDs look great, and HD looks even better.

The trouble with this set is the audio. It sounds *horrible*. No, beyond horrible. The speakers are located in the back, and are supposed to be "Incredible Surround" more like incredible Tin Can. Seriously, they have absolutely no low end, the mid-range is muddled. I played around with moving it to different locations--thinking maybe it was a reflection problem, since the speakers are in the back. No dice. It still sounds like the speakers are coffee cans with string. Seriously, I've heard better quality of sound on pay phones. The sound on this TV sucks so hard I was ready to return it. The only saving grace is that it does have outputs (Dolby Digital and a headphone jack). I've actually used the headphone jack to hook up a pair of $20 Altec Lansing PC speakers that sound *much* better than the built in speakers on this t*rd of a TV.

Seriously, save your money. There are other TVs in the Philips line that don't feature the rear speakers, and I'm sure they are great. This one is a total dog. Stay away.

Excellent picture & styling...

After a good deal of online research and close looks at competing HDTV models, I concluded that the 42PFL7403D compares favorably to competing models costing 50-75% more and purchased one.

The Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 gets 5 stars because the picture is truly superb. When up-close and viewing Blu-ray content at 1080p/24, the picture on this 120Hz LCD is about as good as HDTV gets at any price range.

Furthermore, when viewing standard (480i/p) TV sources, this set's video processing engine does a respectable job of smoothly interpolating the standard 480 lines of source to fill the 1080 lines of HD picture screen (for those who don't realize it, this takes some serious mathematics and processing power to cleanly scale the viewing area of a video stream by 500% :-). Since most 1080p HDTVs do a respectable job of simply displaying a clean 1080i/p signal as seen in electronics stores, I view this capability as a key differentiator between high-end and low-end HDTVs (although perhaps of diminishing value as HD broadcasts are becoming the norm). In fact, the upsampled 480p picture on this set is comparable if not superior to the picture on my old trusty 32" Sony Trinitron XBR tube TV.

Other positives for me include the 42PFL7403's construction, styling, and audio. The clear Plexiglas around the perimeter directs rather substantial sound to the front to complement two rear-facing woofers. Thus, the 42PFL7403's 30W audio, when properly-adjusted, should be strong and clear enough to satisfy those who haven't decked out their viewing area with a home theater setup and positioned speakers all about the place...

In the US we don't often see Philips' better HDTVs next to the more expensive Sonys, Samsungs and Panasonics outside of Costco or Sam's Club. This "7000 series" model is Philips' top-of-the-line 42-inch TV sans their "Ambilight" feature (I couldn't find a 42PFL7603D in the US other than direct from Philips).

Summary: an excellent TV with top picture quality and styling at a surprisingly good price point.

The remainder of this review gets still more geeky and also lists some gripes about the 42PFL7403D/F7 for those who care...

First, this class of larger 1080p TVs make the quality - or lack of quality - of digital content very clear to the viewer. It's important to know whether you're judging the quality of the HDTV set or the content being viewed. I've read many user reviews of HDTVs that slam the subject HDTV for what amounts to poor-quality content - their "older conventional TV looked better". These claims aren't surprising, because their old sets didn't magnify content encoding flaws by spreading them over five times the original viewing area. The old adage of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) certainly applies to modern home entertainment.

I get DirecTV and have their HD DVR (HR22-700) plugged into the Philips 42PFL7403D via HDMI. Like all digital satellite and cable providers, DirecTV compresses the digital signals they deliver to conserve bandwidth. The results of their overly-aggressive compression are clearly visible up close, but the Philips' "digital noise reduction" function appears to do a pretty good job of compensating at all resolutions - things really look pretty good from a comfortable viewing distance.

I do have a few arguably minor gripes about the 42PFL7403...

Gripe one: I currently use only two HDMI inputs to the TV, but there is no way to remove the numerous unused inputs from the rotation of a remote control. So, my DirecTV remote has a "TV Input" button that normally selects the next TV input in a rotation. The first press of this button pops up the Philips TV's list of all 10 inputs, while subsequent presses selects the next input. Unfortunately, the TV takes time with each press to switch to the temporarily-selected input and conclude that there's no signal coming in... With the TV's own remote, one can use the up/down arrows before selecting the desired input. The DirecTV remote can control the TV pretty well, but it's a pain to switch it into full TV mode to change sources, then switch back to controlling the DVR...

Gripe two: The standard setting options like "Movie", "Sports" etc, combine BOTH picture and audio settings, so the relative volume and audio processing emphasis is quite different in each mode. The set maintains a single "personal" settings memory that one can switch back to, but only if there's been no attempt to modify the audio or video settings in "Sports" or "Movie" or whatever... Any such mode modification immediately becomes your new "Personal" settings config. That said, after growing bored with trying out these options, one can certainly adjust the audio to sound good and stay that way. Of course, those with a home theater receiver for audio control won't notice...

Overall, so-far-so good. I cheerfully recommend this TV to my friends.

Great TV, but ...

I got this TV a week ago. It's a very good looking TV with 4 HDMI ports, an 'as-a-dark-as-it-gets' matte LCD screen to give you a nice, crisp, contrasty image - and not too many image controls, but what you need, plus a few nice proprietary image and sound enhancing technologies. And the 47"+ screen is visibly larger than a 46" screen. I love this TV, but unfortunately I already had to exchange it because the speakers broke down after three days. If the replacement turns out to be reliable, I'll call it "a lot of bang for your bucks".

I love this TV. I have had it for over 6 months now and is just as good, if not better than the more expensive brands. It has a great color and looks amazing in HD! Don't waste $500 extra dollars on some other TV because of the name at the bottom of the screen. Trust me, this TV is the best!

Question : Do i have a gaurentee? I have a philips ambilight lcd 42 inch tv and the sound has gone.?
Its 2 years old this christmas and cost €3900 new. Nothing but trouble since i got it. First pixels went now this. Never buy Philips folks.

Answer:
You need to check your rights with the office of fair trading or trading standards/consumer direct. As you have had a number of problems you could argue that the item is not fit for the purpose as sold. For example I had a washing machine that broke down three times in 1 year, I demanded a refund for it as I could not wash clothes in it, this made it not fit for the purpose as sold.It is not up to the consumer to prove it is unfit but for the supplier (not manufacturer) the prove that it is fit. If the store where you bought says you have to take the complaint to the manufacturer they are in breach of the trading standards code of practice as the supplier is responsible. The quicker you make the complaint the better.Oh... I almost forgot to mention it, but you can make a claim on electrical items up to six years after the purchase date (little known fact).

I have been offered a Philips 30" LCD Tv, About 3 years old. Is it likely to be Digital?

Answer:
YES, most likely....it's going to be HD inputs for sure.It Certainly won't have an ATSC Hi Def tuner, but who really uses them...most of us have Cable or Satellite anyways, and HD inputs will get HD from Cable or Sat....

Question : When will the new Philips AUREA 2 LCD TV be launched?
I've heard Philips is going to launch a new AUREA LCD TV, named AUREA 2. It is going to get new features and more advanced technology. I plan buying a new TV later this year and I'm completely seduced by this TV. Does somebody know when it will be on sale? Any other information about its specs? The actual model has just a 8,000:1 contrast ratio, which is really poor compared to Philips Design Collection which features a 29,000:1 ratio. Maybe AUREA 2 will get better about this detail.

Answer:
The new 42in model delivers Full HD 1080p playback and features the technology present in Philips recently launched 9000 Series of TVs. Namely, the Pixel Perfect HD Engine with 2ms response rate at 100Hz and 2.25 trillion colour palette. Styling has had a revamp too with a new glass frame holding the lights, invisible speakers and a set of newly rounded corners to soften the visual impact. Due on sale in October, it'll cost a scorching £2,500 (£500 less than the first-gen model), which puts it deep in the high-end Pioneer and Lower price bracket.

ok just got a 32PF7331 lcd tv.When I went to connect the tv to my amp via rca leads I am getting no sound into my amp/speakers.tried different leads...nothing...Tried plugging into differrent connection ie vcr connection/aux connection on amp....nothing.Do I need to switch off HDMI sockets on the tv to activate standard rca sockets.(I plan to use 1 of the hdmi connections for my dvd player).Any ideas anyone??

Answer:
Make sure the RCA jacks on the TV you're hooking into are labled "OUTPUT" and not "INPUT"...Also you might need to go into your TV's menu and turn those output jacks "ON".Here's a link that might assist you in your hook-up: http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/allhookup.htmlHere's a link that explains why HDMI isn't always the best: http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/hdmi.html

Question : Road traffic interferes with my 32 Philips LCD TV , certain cars cause the picture to flicker?
Is there anything I can do to stop road traffic interfering with my Philips Lcd tv ?, its not a cheap set and gives a great picture apart from the flicker when certain cars pass by ,No funny answers please - I've had them already,UK residant

Answer:
This is an old problem reappeared.Way back,it was discovered that certain vehicles caused "snow" on the old black and white TV's.A regulation was passed for suppressors to be fitted and eliminate this. It's called "pixilating"now and apparently caused by the digital TV service only putting out a signal at less than half strength,so traffic is interfering with digital sets once more.It seems it's a choice of upgrading the TV aerial or purchasing a booster.Hope this helps!

Bummer....you're looking at the Low Definition TV signals on a HI Definition TV set....There is nothing you can do to get to look like it did at the store, short of buying the HD Skybox....
