Great TV & setup

When the tv came, the delivery man not only delivered it, he unpacked it and set it up for me.
The tv is great! I especially like the fact that the commercials are not louder than the tv shows!

Dead in less than 24 hours!!!

Bought this TV, set it up without many problems and watched for 1 hour. Turned it on the next morning and watched for 1 hour, then tried to turn it on for a third time and there was NO PICTURE OR SOUND!! There were only whitish/gray lines on the screen... absolutely no picture no matter what we tried. It's hard to believe a TV like this would die in less than one day. Will return it and will NEVER BUY ANOTHER PHILIPS AGAIN!!! Back to Sony, where we know we're getting a quality television.

No Sound.

The picture sucks so bad and the sound goes out. This TV irritates me so much. Philips will be hearing from me tomorrow, I've called twice.

Issues but apparently resolved by Firmware Update

I've been looking for LCD TV's all of February, purchased a Sanyo from Walmar on 2/6 which lost sound and video after 15 days. Returned easily, thanks to Walmart's 90 day return policy. I'm leary of anything from HHGregg since they only have 14 day return policy or an extended warranty for $199.00! Best buy is 30 days return. I decided to stick with Walmart / Sam's club / Target for 90 day return. Found this at Target for $649.00. Got it home, powered it on, and ..... no signal on HDMI1,2,3, Video 1,2 or Cable. Mucked with settings finally rebooted and presto.... picture and sound. Turned off for the night, next morning... no sound on any. Muched with settings, reset etc. Nothing. I finally downloaded the firmware update from Phillips and that fixed the issue. I'm going to give it 30 days but will return it if I have any problems and go with a different brand.

Features are good, picture and sound are great. No problem if they keep working.

Works for 2 years then black screen

"If you purchase Philips tv's, you'll be sorry. They last 2 years then you get a black screen. Philips will claim that there's no issues with their tv's but if you google "problems with Philips tv's", you'll see all the problems with them after 2 years. I spent $1100. on a 42" LCD and it lasted 2 years. They won't help me and to have a repair service look at it, it's $350.00 and they state that it will happen again. Wasted money that I can't afford. Don't say you haven't been warned."

A Few Useful Observations...

This is my first lcd TV as I was pulled kicking and screaming into the digital age...

I cannot compare it to anything else, therefore, so I picked a 3 star rating.

I like the picture, sound is okay. Menus are quite easy to use and intuitive.

Now the bad: I am amazed that the remote gives you like one second to put in maybe a two or more digit number. If you don't do it exactly right, and fast, the wrong number will appear and the wrong station is what you will get. This is not adjustable and is annoying.

The remote, in general, is not friendly. Buttons are too small to read. For that matter, the channels on the TV are also VERY small to read, much smaller than on my 19 inch analog.

One small criticism... why does the TV always start on with "Philips" blazing across it? I think I know the brand name by now. And, no, it is not in "demo" mode, no options to get rid of this.

It goes go away in a few seconds so no problem. But since I was listing the negatives...

Again, do like the picture, the price, and sound mostly is good.

Not a good image for an HD TV

I have the same problem an earlier poster had, bad video coloring in HD. It's especially notable on faces. I have 2 other HD tv's, Vizio 720p and Sony 1080p, and get my video from DishNetwork in HD. Neither of these other tv's have this problem and they all share the same video feed (HDMI connection from DishNetwork ViP722).

I'm fairly versed in TV tech so I went thru the video settings and tried to tweak them to get rid of the 'cartoonish' look, but I couldn't find an acceptable setting. I reset everything to the default settings and it was still there.

I did a lot of research before finally buying this set at Walmart for $400 (price match against a sale unit at Target) and almost all reviewers praised its picture quality. I was very surprised and disappointed to find the image quality so poor. I will return it to Walmart and pick up a Vizio instead.

A LCD that Will not disappoint

I purchased this TV from Wal-Mart for the low price of $425. This TV looks and sounds awesome. I have it hooked into my PS3 with the HDMI and the games look crisp and beautiful my only complaint is in brighter scenes with lots of motion just on games you can see some fuzzy edges but with some adjustment this goes away.

The Good:
Easy to use menus and set up.
Great Picture quality for 720p (looks just as good as my friends Sony if not better)
The sound is loud and well balanced.
It looks nice and sleek
Comes with a stand

The bad:
The remote is ugly and the buttons are too small. (Buy a universal and this is fixed)
Depending on the channel you have to adjust the screen colors sometimes. (No auto adjust)

Games:
This TV looks great when I play My PS3 Modern Warfare 2 looks amazing as well as Fallout 3.

Wii also looks very nice up on the screen in wide screen mode.

Summary and last thought:

This TV is not the Top of the line by any means and should not be rated and compared as such. It's like comparing Apples to Cell Phones it can't be done.
But as for what this TV is it is a great deal and for those of us on a budget it cannot be beat

9/10

Cheap, but solid.

This television is wonderful for those who do not wish to spend a large amount on a decent size television. Even though it was only $400, this Philips 32 inch is very solid. I love the picture quality and I consider it better than most Vizio's. Colors are great and its very crisp and sharp. The only downside to the TV is the audio. They could have done a way better job with that. Luckily, I use my home theater system so it's of no bother to me.

Happy with this TV

I bought this TV because it was the biggest that would fit in
my Dad's entertainment center. I had already bought a Samsung that only
worked for an hour.
My only complaint is that this TV has such a realistic picture
that you have to get used to how much different it looks, it is almost
as if you were there filming. My dad only has standard definition cable, but
I could tell a huge difference in quality of picture, and have not had any of the complaints of other people buying this TV. As far as I have seen this TV has had the best picture of any I have used, being enclosed in the TV cabinet the volume is usually needed to be higher than normal to hear as the speakers are behind the TV, but no problems. My dad loves this new TV and I wish my phillips 32" (720p) would have fit in his cabinet, so that I could have keep it for myself, oh well, sadly I paid the same thing for my 720p Phillips two years ago, As I turned them on side by side, and the 120 hz 1080p blew it away even with standard cable. Wow, 120hz is AWESOME!!!
I shopped around, and amazon had the lowest price, and shipping was as expected. Thanks Amazon, you did me good on this one!

An excellent 32-inch HDTV...

As a satisfied 12-month-owner of a Philips 42-inch HDTV (the Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV), I purchased the Philips 32PFL6704D/F7 to replace an old tube TV in the bedroom. I'm very pleased with the styling, picture and sound of this set - it fits the room just right.

I had noticed a few customer reviews of this model complaining about difficulty in getting proper color settings for flesh-tones, but based upon a greater number of exemplary reviews and my own experience with this Philips product line, I bought it unseen via Amazon. Sure enough, when the TV was setup, I wasn't pleased with the tint of people's faces... I tweaked the color settings for a bit, and figured I could get it right eventually before deciding to call Philips.

Before calling, I went online to Philips' support site and found that a firmware update, v1.08, had just been released about two weeks earlier. The TV came from Amazon with v1.06 loaded, so I updated the firmware and found the default picture color much improved (although the release notes didn't refer to any such issue being fixed). Could be I was imagining the color issues, could be some screwed-up factory settings were nicely reset by the firmware upgrade process, but as of now I'm quite happy with this product.

A Good Philips model for the price.

I just purchased this Philips Model 32PFL6704D this week. Fits in my entertainment cabinet with no problems. I found this to be the only 32 inch LCD to be 30 inches wide and was able to fit it into my hutch which was designed for a 27 inch tube set.
I researched a lot of brands of HDTV lcd's and this Philips model had very good spec's for the price! I found this set with some minor drawbacks as the other owners who reviewed here did. The sound wasn't the best from the rear firing speakers but it was ok in the hutch. I also noticed the same "shiney face" type color on both the HD and SD formats. I hope that Philips will come out with a software update that may solve this issue or at least allowing us to adjust it better. The color adjustments and the automatic assistant does not solve this issue.
Over all this set does work well and compares very well to my $800.00 Sony XBR LCD which it replaced due to failure!(only 2 years use out of the Sony). In my case it was better for me to purchase this Philips model new then to spend aprox $400.00 to fix my Sony out of warranty! Easy set up and an excellent HD picture through a Comcast HD set top box using an HDMI cable except for the shiney face issue. I'm happy with my purchase of this model and recommend it if your looking for a 1080P 120 HZ LCD tv!

Amazing picture quality.

I have this TV connected to a PS3 (HDMI), DirecTV R22 with HD (HDMI), Dreamcast (S-VIDEO), Creative Zen Vision M(Composite), and media on USB FLash Drives. The picture quality is on par with reality. It is just that good. As far as setup goes, the TV will show you a series of pictures split down the middle and ask you which looks better. This results in a picture that looks best to you.

The one and only thing that I do not like of this TV is that full digital audio cannot be forwarded from HDMI though the coax digital out. Due to 'copyright' nonsense the audio from HDMI is down mixed to stereo. So for the PS3 and DTV I have to run a separate cable directly to the audio receiver for full digital audio. Which defeats the purpose of HDMI. However the TV will put all analog sources though the coax out so you can limit the number of wires that way.

Pros
* Plenty of Inputs
* Forwards all analog audio though a single output . Digital or analog
* Amazing picture quality
* Improves picture quality of non HD feeds
* Standard VESA mount for wall or stand mounting

Cons
* Does not forward full Digital Audio From HDMI through COAX out
* Picture looks almost too real

Firmware flaws...

First, I'm not much of a TV guy, so I can't really rate the picture quality. To me it looks great, but I don't have much to compare it to.

I am however, an engineer who does embedded software development for a living. And that means that I recognize a firmware bug when I see one. And I've seen three after only about two weeks of usage. And that's with the latest available firmware as of 02/2010, version 1.08

We use this TV for two purposes:

1.) To connect our family computer to it (via HDMI) and enjoy the nice 1920x1080 resolution
2.) To watch some HDTV content which we receive via an outdoor antenna - using the built-in ATSC tuner.

Here are the problems so far:

1.) Whenever we switch to the PC (via HDMI) we can still hear sound from the TV channel. It's very faint, but it's audible - especially since we sit directly in front of the TV when using the PC. This is reproducable - not just a one-time event.

2.) Once, when watching ATSC TV, reception was poor and the TV went into a "loop" always repeating the last 3-5 seconds of video and sound - similar to an old vinyl record that skips... This stopped only when we changed the channel and then went back to the original channel. So far this only happened once, but it looks like the internal error handling for ATSC TV is not foolproof.

3.) When switching from HDMI (PC mode) to TV, we had no sound. Volume was turned on, but we heard nothing. Eventually we increased the volume to what would have been quite loud, and finally the sound came back - suddenly and loudly. We were than able to decrease the sound back to the regular range without it disappearing.

None of these are real serious problems, but they leave the impression that the firmware is still a bit immature...

I would have still rated it 4 stars, had it not been for Philips customer support who so far has sent me nothing but meaningless pre-canned replies when I alerted them to these problems....

At the end of the day though - we don't regret the purchase.

It's okay but seems to have HDMI handshake problems

I bought this back in August on impulse at a store when the old CRT TV in my kitchen quit working one day. I've seen better picture quality, but it's certainly not bad for a TV this size and price. As for sound, I think for it's pretty decent for a smallish TV. Better than expected actually. I also like the ability to upgrade the firmware using a USB flash drive. Very handy, and I wish all non-internet enabled TVs were like this. My slightly older Toshiba requires a memory card to upgrade the firmware. No big deal but the USB option is quicker and easier in my opinion.

My problem with this TV is that it doesn't always perform the HDMI handshake correctly with my DirecTV HD receiver (HR2x-700) and the result when this happens is a screen with a pink/purple hue and no sound. This wouldn't be an issue if you plan to only use the TV's built-in digital tuner or use component connections instead of HDMI, but I don't.

I'm no stranger to electronic gadgets and technology, so I can assure you that this isn't a case of user error. I have two DirecTV HD receivers (HR20-700 & HR23-700) and while my other larger LCD TV (a Toshiba) has *zero* HDMI handshake problems, this one does. I tried all the different HDMI inputs and it's not an HDMI cable problem either, as I have tried several including the one I use for the Toshiba. While it is possible that part of the issue lies in the DirecTV receiver, the bottom line is that this problem does NOT occur with the Toshiba using the same cable and DirecTV receivers so there is clearly something different about this Philips model and how it handles HDMI.

Will you have HDMI handshake problems with this TV? You might, you might not, but at a minimum I would not recommend this TV if you plan to use it with a DirecTV HD receiver via HDMI. I don't have a need for anything else connected via HDMI to this TV, so I can't tell you if this happens with other HDMI hardware (such as a Blu-Ray player). This problem primarily pops up if the TV is turned on when the DirecTV receiver is already on, such as if I am watching DirecTV in the bedroom on a CRT and my wife turn this LCD on in the kitchen. (This receiver resides in the bedroom but is shared between the bedroom and kitchen). Recent changes to DirecTV firmware has in some ways helped the problem and in other ways made it worse. You may say that the problem is with the DirecTV receiver then, but I will remind you that my Toshiba *never* has this problem. Draw your own conclusions from that. There are other DirecTV users with similar HDMI problems on certain specific TVs and I am not alone with this problem on a Philips LCD TV. At least DirecTV listens to their customers and attempts to correct problems that only some people report (there is an online forum that allows for indirect contact with DirecTV developers and allows customers the option of testing beta versions of their firmware). I tried contacting Philips about this problem and while they initially responded pretty quickly, they never followed up with it after they asked for more details and I provided them. I even tried a more recent firmware update from Philips but it made no difference.

I'm currently shopping for another 22" LCD TV for the kitchen, about the biggest we have room for, and hopefully one that will work better with an HDMI connection. At that time I will move this TV to the master bedroom (where the DirecTV receiver is) and connect it using component cables. I will still have a comparable HD picture but this will stop the HDMI problem. If it weren't for having the HDMI cable running inside walls to get from the bedroom to the kitchen I'd just hook it up that way now but I shouldn't have to do that anyway in my opinion.

I usually save the box for months for things like this, but for some strange reason I decided to throw it out after only two days before we noticed this problem around a week later. If I hadn't thrown out the box, I would have exchanged it for a different brand. I guess I could have tried to exchange it for another of the same model but I'm not sure that would have helped as I think it's just a quirk in the TV's hardware and/or firmware.

This review isn't so much to put Philips down, but just to warn others of some potential issues that may arise. If you decide to purchase this TV for exclusive use with an HDMI connection, I hope it works well for you.

Excellent 22" HDTV. Nice for kitchen, bedroom, office or small rec-room. GREAT picture!!!

Includes 2 HDMI ports (1 back and 1 side), Component connections, S-Video and etc.

When you program the channels on setup it picks up both analog and digital channels.

You don't need a set-top cable box to get a great picture just hook the cable from the wall to the TV rf in.

Hooked to an antenna the digital channels look fantastic.

The sound is what you expect from a small TV...good but not great.

The remote color including the buttons is very dark and hard to read in dim lighting but works great.

Great little TV!!!

Question : What about Philips LCD TV 32PFL5609 at Rs. 31, 000?
Can you suggest any better 32" LCD TV Models in the above price range?

Answer:
That model is full 1080p and has pixel plus technology built in so that non native resolution HD is automatically upconverted to 480p and sometimes 1080i. I would buy the Philips in a heartbeat.Good luck

Question : I have a Philips LCd TV model-32PFL5322D/37. I wanted a tv that can support true hi def on 1080i.?
On this site it says the tv has a Display format of 720p and input video formats of 1080i. Does this mean i can get high definition in 1080i? ?? http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-and-plasma/philips-32pfl5322d-32-lcd/4507-6482_7-32402687.html?ta g=nav

Answer:
It will accept 1080i but cannot display it as 1080i. It will convert 1080i to 720p before being displayed. If an LCD can display 1080i, it can also display 1080p and will be advertised as such. Look at the resolution of the LCD tv. If it is less than 1920 x 1080, then it is not a 1080p display. On a different note "true HD" is a rather good market tactic. Most consumers would have trouble telling the difference between 720p, 1080i and 1080p TVs, especially in the 37" size you are looking at.

How do I connect my Toshiba Satellite SP10-304 to my Philips LCD tv (42")?

There are a few options here, depending on what connections are on your TV and what connections are on your PC.The best option would be HDMI, which carries both audio and video. If no HDMI, you can use VGA, however this carries only video. You will need a separate audio cable for sound (1/8", or 3.5mm).As well, you can use S-Video, but again, you would need a separate cable for audio (1/8", or 3.5mm).
