Quality you can trust at a great value!
I've owned a number of Philips products over the years, my first was their flagship A/V 5.1 Receiver and a matching CD player, purchased through a friend whose dad worked for Philips, back in about 1991. I used those two pieces until 2001, and sold them on Ebay for a pretty good price for me and the buyer. I wish I still had them for a separate room, even if just used for music, and I bet they'd still be working quite well today. My point is that I gained a lot of trust in the Philips brand over that period of time. I'm a big Sony fan when it comes to video products. But I decided to give Philips a try again and in the two months I've owned this TV I've been quite pleased. No, it's not a Sony XBR, and Philips will likely never compare, but for what you get with the this Philips for the price, you won't be disappointed. I'm not using this for a top notch home theatre room. If you're building on that, then you're likely looking at the wrong TV here. This makes a great family room TV. It's easy to use for the whole family, and the quality of the picture is for sure good enough to stand up to the middle of the road Sony models that are at least $300 more.
As for my technical review here. I don't give it very high marks for appearance, not because the overall look isn't nice, because it's bezel and stand are completely black plastic and that static material attracts dust like no other. It's too bad TV manufacturers don't frame their displays in aluminum like Apple's 30 inch cinema display, but powder-coated black. Of course that would likely boost the price way out of this price point. The picture quality of this TV is wonderful! Like I said no complaints yet. I don't have a Blu-ray hooked into this, but my 1080p upscaling DVD player looks quite awesome, and HD programming via cable looks flawless. The World Series was awesome to watch on this TV, due to it's 120Hz Clear LCD, 2ms performance for superb motion sharpness. Also, the 50000:1 contrast ratio does produce very nice deep blacks. As for the sound on this TV, well the "invisible speakers with incredible surround" are pretty much worthless. This is now a trend to put the speakers on the back of flat panel TVs so that the bezel can be thinner all the way around the screen. Nice idea, but this means ideal TV placement is necessary. In fact, I would guess just setting the TV on a stand with it about 6" from a wall with no other cabinet walls or obstructions would be best. Placing it inside an entertainment center reduces the sound clarity to an unacceptable low! So, I'd recommend also buying a soundbar or some form of 5.1± speaker system. Lastly, the swivel stand is a huge bonus that I don't believe any other brand offers!

Great TV, Great Price
I got this TV on sale at a competitor owned by a man named Sam - a "club" if you will - for less than $700. For the price it's phenomenal. The picture quality is on par with any TV out there - I'm looking at you, Sony. The speakers are in the back of the TV, but I prefer that because I have my audio running through my stereo, and so should you.
I turned off the motion enhancement/trumotion/whatever it's called, because it is distracting.

Super UPgrade
First off let me start by saying, I am VERY happy with this Philips LCD HDTV 42inch (6000 series). It was a definite upgade from my 32inch Sharp, with that said let me start my review.
Appearence: When i first saw the delivery men with my TV, I was in total AWW. Just the box alone was stunning, then when i finally started the unwrapping and got it mounted to the TV stand and on my dresser I took about 5 minutes just analyzing this beautiful TV. It has a nice glossy THIN border around the TV(which i found perfect)so I have more TV to watch lol. The TV stand is great it swivels left/right for optimal viewing angle. The Screen has a nice matte finish so there is hardly any glare if TV is facing a window, even with no picture the screen size is just simply overwhelming.
Ease of Use: Philps 42inch LCD HDTV is very user friendly. As soon as you turn on the TV it prompts you to start the TV setup with detailed and very easy on-screen instructions to help you find the right settings for your viewing pleasure. In the case you are having trouble you can always refer to the handy instruction booklet or call philips great customer service.
Picture Quality: The picture quality on this TV is extraordinary, one those factors being the 50000:1 contrast ratio. It makes the black look super rich and not faded as you would notice on other TV's, another feature on this TV is the 2ms response time.. let me warn you if you currently do not own a TV with a response time of 3ms or lower it will take some time getting used to this, because it makes the movies look like they are being played in fast forward. Don't get me wrong when you get used to the picture it looks AMAZING, it makes the image look almost 3D.. I literally watched 3 movies one after another because i couldn't keep my eyes off the damn thing lol. (Of course for the picture perfect quality you will need to have HD service from your local Cable/satellite provider and HDMI cables help out a lot)
Sound Quality: I have done my research and I always see other reviewers writing bad things about the sound quality of the philips TV's. Now, from personal viewing and listening I can respond by saying that it is absolutely not true.. I would assume that if you have furniture, that is going to be obstructing the left, top, and or right side of the TV you are going to have difficulties hearing unless you up the volume to about 80-85. Now, the notion that the TV has poor sound you can dismiss that BS.. I can watch my TV from about 9 feet away, have the volume on 20 and still hear perfect. Remember, I have my TV on the stand about 3 inches from the wall.
As you can see I have rated this product with 5 stars, and trust me it deserves more. This TV is outstanding and honestly it is a TV that will last a lifetime, I plan on never getting rid of this great product.. I am extremely happy with my purchase and I would recommend this TV to everyone in my family so that goes the same for my Amazon.com family!! "SENSE AND SIMPLICITY"

Great picture watching hockey
Compared this model to last years, both sitting side by side at big box store and about $100.00 difference. New model well worth the extra dough. Both have 120hz, but this model has 50,000 contrast ratio vs.20,000, speaker system was better but still not the best. 4 HDMI (3 in back one on side),nice remote but I linked to my dish one. The base will swivel about 30-40 degrees either way. The onscreen set up was very easy and designed for your own taste in picture and sound. My one gripe is that it only has 1 anolog and 1 composite audio out,no fiber optic to hook to my reciever. The composite sounds good, but a audiophile might notice a difference. Still. a great set for the money.

First LCD
This is my first LCD TV and I am in love. I actually made this purchase at a discount club for about 700 bucks. Setup was really easy and only took about 10 minutes. The picture is not as great as some of the higher end TVs such as Samsung or Sony, but I definitely think it's worth way more than the actual cost. You won't be disappointed!

Customer Review :
Excellent image for it's price
After owning this set for over a month, and spending a lot of time researching the best bang for the buck in the 50 inch and larger category, here are my impressions:
The only real compromise you will make in purchasing this TV versus the more expensive models is the contrast ratio, it just doesn't get as truly black as other far more expensive models. There are a few occasions when you will notice this: on letterboxed super wide screen Bluray content, and on some graphics on broadcasts and playing some parts of video games. But that's it...the dynamic contrast of this 52" Philips/Funai is certainly adequate for 98.3% of all other content.
Also note that the picture right out of the box is in no way representative of what this set can achieve. Out of the box settings are way too bright, the color is hyped, and the resolution was set to a mode that created scaling artifacts on a 1080i input. As soon as these were adjusted to more realistic levels, and the picture set to "unscaled", the screen quality came to life.
There are many controls for how the image is displayed, play with them to get close to what pleases your eye, and then write them down when you are happy. From there you can tweak up and down to achieve close to perfection.
I like my picture somewhat on the dark side (akin to the movie theatre experience) which also lowers power consumption. Here are some settings you can use as a starting point (Firmware version 13). Try these before calling in the expensive home theatre guy to calibrate your set:
Contrast 38 Brightness 67 Color 33 Tint 0 Sharpness 3 Temperature - Warm Dynamic Contrast - On Digital Natural Motion - On Noise reduction - Off MPEG noise reduction - On Color enhancement - On Picture Format - Unscaled Vertical and Horizontal - Adjust to fit your source material so that the image fits perfectly into the screen.
Something no one has mentioned here is the ability to display your digital photos from a USB flash drive...the quality is phenomenal, the ultimate slide show!! You can also play music files from a flash drive.
Also, please note that this set has upgradable firmware. There is information on the Philips site for the latest version (correcting many of the issues that have been brought up in previous reviews) and the instructions for upgrading the firmware are in the manual. The set I purchased was already up to date as it was unboxed.

Great for the price!
I bought my Philips from a wholesale club for Christmas. I had been looking and comparing features of several models. This one was on display in the club and actually was on. I saw very little difference between the Philips and more expensive models. Best of all they told me I could bring it back within 90 days if I was dissatisfied with the quality. After a couple of months with several adjustments, I think I finally have it set up properly. I don't see as much blurring. The best picture is watching a movie on blue ray. It is crispy clear. When watching regular television, not sure if the transmission of that station affects the clarity of the picture.
Now that I look back on my observations in the club, they probably were playing a dvd on blue ray. The real test is when you try it with your local HDTV provider.
The remote control is so cheaply made, we are still unable to get the battery cover back in place. I don't understand why such a nice looking set would have such a drab looking remote. The buttons need to be larger and raised a little bit making it user friendly. My other tv has a shiny black laquered remote matching the set perfectly. But as someone else said, it gets the job done.
I am pleased with my first HDTV flat screen. It looks real good on my wall.

Very Nice, Really
We got this at a club store for under $1k.
Also got a blu-ray player and the latest Star Trek Blu-ray.
It's really incredible how awesome the picture quality is on this. It takes a little getting used to the individual whiskers/pores showing on actor's faces. There is a very distinct awareness of depth. It's not 3d, but just a simple awareness of depth.
I also tried my old Firefly DVDs. And again I was blown away by the detail and clarity.
My last TV was a 42" LG plasma. So it shouldn't be that much difference, but it is.
Then I turned on regular programming. Pixelation all over the place...Took me until the end of the first quarter of the big game to find the OUTPUT RESOLUTION setting on the HD cable box. Once I had that set to 1080i, the quality of picture was near perfect. Cable doesn't come in 1080p around here.
The blacks are as black as the TV's case. I've noticed an occasional digital blur, but for the most part the movement is not blurred at all.
I'm not a sound guru, but the TV sounds good to me.

Fifty Two Inches of crystal-clear High Definition
I bought this LCD TV five months ago, to upgrade from a my previous Philips 42PFL5332D/37 42" 720p LCD. I wanted to go bigger and 1080p and 120hz were too cool to resist. I was not disappointed, Watching a Blu-Ray movie is so phenomenal on this set, it feels like you are watching the studio's master copy. 120hz makes Video Games, Sports and Live broadcasts so lifelike and fluid, just dont use it for movies, it creates a "soap opera effect", this can be disabled by turning off the "Digital Natural Motion" in the OSD Menu. The chassis is handsome, with rounded edges reminds me of a giant I-phone. The clear plastic trim adds a sleek sophistication and looks nice compared to other dull square all-black sets. There are two mini-woofer drivers on the back of the TV as well as "invisible" tweeters, this TV is supposed to have improved audio over other HDTV's, I wouldnt know because I use a 7.1 Channel Surround system instead. 4x HDMI ports, its future-proof. Only drawback is its plain-jane remote, pick up a logitech harmony and youre all set. Let me put it to you this way.. I went to see my San Diego Chargers play the Tennessee Titans on Christmas Day, 8 rows from the field, but I actually still missed watching it on this Philips! its that good.

Great Value
I also bought this at my local wholesale club (you know, the one next to the largest big box store in the world) for less than a grand. I have 3 inputs connected to it - the cable box, an upconverting DVD player, and the PS3 - all using HDMI. And there's still one free HDMI port on the side. The audio output (S/PDIF only, so I needed a coax/optical adapter) is connected to my 5.1 surround sound system.
The video looks amazing. This replaced an older 50" Toshiba LCD (1080i max, 1 DVI input, about $2,500 and it was a deal!), and the difference is astounding. It's mounted on a stand we got for it, in the middle of a custom wall unit, so it's a bit recessed.
The initial setup uses a wizard to guide you through your preferred settings - you see two pictures next to each other, and pick the one that looks better to you. So you don't need any special calibration software, just follow the wizard.
Using HDMI cables made a big difference. I originally connected it to the PS3 using component cables because the HDMI cables I had ordered hadn't arrived yet. When they came, I switched cables, and the difference was huge.
The remote is only for the TV - it's not an all-in-one. But what would you expect? The remote is perfectly adequate for controlling the TV.
The only thing I can complain about is the sound. The speakers are in the back of the TV, so the sound projects at the back wall, and as a result, it sounds muffled. I have no idea what they were thinking with this design. However, it doesn't matter if you hook this up to your surround sound system - we just always use the surround sound now.
We liked this TV so much we bought a second one for the game/exercise room. That one is mounted over the fireplace and is open on the sides, and the sound on that one is fine.
Great TV. Amazing value.

good, when it works
I bought one of these and it stopped turning on about a week after getting it. I called Philips support, who shipped me out a new one without much hassle. I got the new one along with a pre-paid FedEx label. Free shipping back was nice, although dropping off to FedEx is a pain if you don't live near a dropoff center. Anyway, the second TV stopped turning on as well about two weeks later. Same issue. On a hunch, I unplugged the power cable for about 30 mins, and the TV worked after plugging it back in. Not the best solution for a brand new TV, but better than sending TVs back and forth constantly and getting the same crappy model back.
Philips customer service seemed very nice (and english-speaking), but this model is a definite lemon.

When it works it works good
I gave this to my wife for Christmas. After about i month it would not turn on. My wife called Phillips and they sent out a new TV. After 1 1/2 weeks the new one does the same thing. If they are unplugged for a while they turn on and remember all of the settings. When it works, it looks and sounds good. Setup was very easy and it detected the 10 digital stations we get from cable. Rather than get another problem tv sent to us I may just plug it in to a power strip and turn it off and on from that. The TV does have a sleep timer. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy this again or recommend it to anyone else.

Don't even go there . . .
I bought two of these at a local store in the spring. They were for guest rooms that are occupied maybe 4 or 5 weekends a year. Got home and decided to check Amazon reviews. (I know, cart before the horse.) So, I read the reviews and think hmmm . . . what are the chances this TV is REALLY that bad? Pretty good chances, as it turns out. But the reviews had haunted me. (I actually hung on to the boxes until October, and the TVs were working when I checked them then.) Today I went in one of the guest rooms to change the linens, so I turned it on, just for kicks. Dead as a door nail. The TV has not been watched more than 20 hours total since purchased. The second is still working. At least the reviews made me nervous enough that I saved all my paperwork, including receipt, and for once I actually did mail in the warranty card. But save yourself the heartache, and Just Don't Do It.

Don't buy Philips
We bought this TV a little more than a year ago for our bedroom. It's worked well up until 3 months ago when we started having problems that many, many others seem to have with Philips TVs (just do a search). When you first turn it on, the sound is terrible - sounds like static and popping. After 20 minutes, the sound is better, but still not clear as it used to be. Additionally, there is a static popping sound that comes occasionally from the back of the TV and it will turn itself off. The only way to get it to come back on is to unplug it for a minute and then plug it back in. Philips support is basically non-existent. Save your money and the environment by buying something that will last more than one year!!

Don't Buy Philips!
I had this TV over 1 year and it is having the same problems other customers are experiencing. When I turn the TV on, the picture becomes quickly distorted. It automatically turns itself off and on, then makes a loud alarm sound then turns itself off and on again. It goes through this routine a few times. I have to unplug and plug back in, turn on and then the picture will come back but no sound. I have to leave it like this for awhile then unplug/plug back in - then it works. This process takes 20 minutes and it is EVERY SINGLE time I turn on the tv. I will NOT buy another Philips!

After a year and half, the sound went out
The television was purchased in January of 2008 for my grandma who was entering a memory care unit in a home. A year and half later, the sound no longer works which is annoying to anyone but is even harder on a person with dementia and Alzheimer's. It can not be returned as the store has a 90 day return policy and when I contacted Philips to see if they could be of help, their insulting response was: "If you have already visited the support site and require additional assistance, as your TV is out of warranty, please refer to your local Yellow Pages under 'Television Service and Repair'. A repair center will help determine the extent of your TV's repair needs.
I will never buy a Philips product again because of the poor quality and even more for the poor customer service. For someone that receives $75 a month, I wonder how many months she will have to save up to have it repaired?

LEMON!!!
DO NOT BUY THIS LEMON! For the first 15 months this t.v. was great... Then it began turning itself on and off, making high-pitched squealing noises, the image appears as if you are viewing through a glass shower door, the sound cuts in and out. This started out as an intermittent problem, now it continues all day, every day. I bought this t.v. because my previous Philips lasted over 20 years. They just don't make them like they used to.

No Clue what the others are talking about
I bought my TV in the spring of 2007. 2 and a half years later, mine still works as good as the day I bought it. The only problem I've had with it is that the "Phillips" letters started falling off a week after I bought it, and now instead of saying "PHILLIPS" it now reads "ILIP," not really something that has anything to do with the quality of the TV. The HD picture is superb, Blu-ray movies look spectacular, and PS3 games look amazing. The sound quality is still good. Maybe I just got lucky, but as I said, my TV is still as good as the day I bought it.

Customer Review :
Best 47 inch TV series available today.
Having just purchased a model from same Philips series, I concur with a prior positive review 110%. In my quest for the best, I went as far as buying, assembling and then returning 3 other 47" TVs within a 24 hour period. After hours of internet research and staring at countless screens in every major retail store, my eyes told me that the Philips 47PFL6704D is THE BEST 47 inch at any price, including those advertised as 240hz oe LED. It seems the differences between the 47PFL5704D and 6704D are as follows: Thinner bezel (frame around screen) on the 6704, lighter weight (6704 under 54 pounds), higher contrast ratio (50,000 to 1 on 6704). Having owned and gifted too many Sony, Samsung, VIZIO, Hitachi and Toshiba big screen TVs over the past 10 years, I can say without a doubt, this line of Philips is the best available today for ease of use, picture quality, clean design and although Philips is not a household name in the USA, in Europe they have been a top brand for all kinds of household appliances for many decades. In fact, every day I brush my teeth with a Philips Sonicare.
My only complaints with this Philips are that the images appear to be too bright and too realistic at times. I watch most DVD movies using my VIZIO Blu-Ray player because it seems to upconvert regular DVDs to 1080p better than my Samsung and JVC players. Unless I change the Philips TV mode to MOVIE, everything appears closer to live TV instead of a film because the Philips TV does such a great job at delivering razor sharp images with details I'd expect to see only from a 3D Blu-Ray DVD. The TV lacks 2 inputs I expected and found on all my former big screens. It only has 1 coax input for antenna or cable and uses standard left & right RCA connections for mating with a home theatre systems (vs. a single digital jack). On a positive note, my former big screen only had 3 HDMI jacks and this one has 4 so I can hook up my home theatre system, Blu-Ray player, DVD recorder and DVD/VHS recorder as well.
Sound quality also surpasses what i experienced with 6 prior Samsung and Hitachi big screens that had much larger cabinets and speakers. Most home theatre systems (HTS) will still deliver deeper bass and surround sound, but without an HTS you can still enjoy whatever you're watching as this TV mesmerizes you.

The pain of research pays off!
O.K., if you're reading this, it's probably only one in a long line of reviews that you'll be researching in your seemingly epic quest for the right LCD T.V. I know your pain. If you have a family like me, you don't drop a cool grand or more on anything unless you're positive that you're getting the most for your money. I am here to lay your fears to rest. The saying goes "I don't know art, but I know what I like." I didn't know anything about this new technology until I started to look for the right LCD. And the manufacturers do not make that task simple. There always seemed to be some compromise for the sake of size or the brand name or the contrast ratio or the 120Hz...(gasp, pant). But I digress, this T.V. blew me away. Philips isn't exactly one of the big names you think of when it comes to HDTV, not like Sony or Samsung. That's what I used to think. This set stood out from the seas of hi-def splattered on the walls of department stores. The picture quality is truly astounding. Not just for this price, for any price. Although 120 Hz isn't exactly my thing, (I think it makes everything look too computer animated), the rest of the features were a God send. For example, I can't stand having too many options for my picture. I never want to mess with the Gamma settings of my T.V., nor do I have the desire to even know what that means. I just want to WATCH my T.V., and I want it to look pretty. So, this T.V. has presets that optimize it for different viewing experiences, ex. movies, games, low power "night" mode, and so on. The simplicity of the beauty on my screen only adds to my love for this product. Have had zero issues with quality or reliability. Haven't had to deal with Philips cust. service, so I can't speak to that end. The sound, with sufficient volume, is more than enough to feel immersed in whatever you're watching. So, if you're finally tired of hunting, comparing, contrasting, compromising, agonizing, side-by-siding, and scrutinizing, rest at ease with this purchase. I haven't regretted it, and I hope you won't either.

Philips 47"TV
I have had the Philips 47" flat screen model number 47PFL7422D/37 for over a year.It looks like this TV is just a later model from the one I have. I really like this TV. I like the way the remote can choose the different formats for picture size. It is very easy to use and the picture quality is great. My hearing is not great so I can't speek for the sound quality. My neighbor has one also and he loves his too.

Question : I have a Philips LCD TV. There's a USB port in it. How do I view movies through this?
Do I connect my computer to the TV directly or copy the movie onto a USB drive?
Answer:
Copy to flash drive then put it in do not hook up your comp to it that could blow both the comp and the tv and be a major problem. Also I think that usb is just for pictures but i could be wrong so don't quote me on that.

Question : Philips LCD tv cracked. repair?
i have a philips 20' LCD tv. i recently moved and now when i turn on the tv it looks like there is a crack and it takes up most of the screen. the crack isnt actually there, only when i turn on the tv. can it be fixed and is it worth it?
Answer:
If there has been a lot of pressure on the screen there could be a crack on one of the inside layers. There are multiple layers of plastic that make up the screen. The LCD panel will cost more to replace than to buy a new TV.

Question : Trying to hook my toshiba satellite to Philips LCD TV???
Ok, I've been at this for three days. I'm a PC tech, so I've tried all the basics. My laptop has VGA and S-Video out. I'm not happy with the S-video quality, and my tv only has HDMI (not DVI) and component for Hi-Def. I bought a VGA to Component (RGB) cable. I combed through the web trying to get some info on this. The native resolution for my tv us 1366x768. Of course this resolution is not one of the selections for my Intel 945GM adapter. I know power strip is not compatible with this intel card, and I also tried to hack the .inf file with the help a brilliant post I found on the web, and still nothing. When I connect my laptop to the tv, the picture is very noisy, then after a while, it's just black. HELP!!!! Just tell me if this is possible or not. I'm driving myself nuts over this trying to make this work when it may not even be possible. Just give it to me straight, I need to get some sleep... lol thanks.
Answer:
VGA is sinple RGB with some extra signals thrown in. Component is RGB where some of the extra signals are included in the RGB. So, a VGA to RGB cable doesn't hack it. You need a VGAS to component converter.

Question : I have a Philips 32in LCD tv. PFL5332D/37. I have a problem where it seems to just shut off on its own but the
blue light stays on. I try to use the remote and the light blinks and nothing happens. I try to turn it off on the remote and the tv its self but nothing happens. Than it randomly comes on and sometimes it doesnt at all and than the blue light will disappear and a red light will appear and start blinking. Whats wrong with the tv?
Answer:
One of many possibilities....Power supply for the Backlight panel is badPower inverter for the Backlight is badBalancer module for the Backlight is badA KEY test we use to isolate the problem further is "DOES the backlight FLASH ON during the startup procedure?"If it does....then your POWER supply is OK....But we still have to isolate the problem to the inverter or the balancer....An Authorized Philips servicer is your best choice in resolving your problem.....
