Great when it works. LOUSY Sony customer service!!!

Be very careful. I purchased both 46" and 40" XBR4. Great picture but chip sets in each TV have had to be replaced. First chip set was within one year warranty. Second chip set was one month out of warranty and Sony refused to honor warranty until multiple communications from dealer and from authorized repair facility at which point (after 15 phone calls and two months) they finally agreed to pay for $400 of a $600 repair. Problems revolved around HDMI connections (which we originally thought was a handshake issue) Great product when it works, but dreadful customer service, suggesting buyer beware or at very least consider extended warranty.

Buyer Beware

We purchased this television one year ago today. It has not worked for two months. We have spent endless hours with the Customer Service Dept on the phone. The parts (computer & panel) just went out on it for no reason. They do not have the parts to fix the television. They offered us a refurbished TV (someone elses problem TV) which we declined. If you take the refurbished TV, our warranty and extended warranty are null and void. We wanted ours fixed. Customer Service (India I suppose) lied numerous times regarding the delivery date of the parts. We went from "the Authorized Dealer will receive the part in 2 days" to "it is backordered until the end of February". They offered us a brand new xbr6 television replacement for an additional $300.00. They said it would be here within two weeks. No sight of that. Sony Customer Service is the worst I have ever dealt with, a bunch of liars. If you get lucky and get a TV with no problems, then you are good. I advise against buying any Sony products. I know I won't.

A Dice Roll

A lot of potential problems with this model. We have had three various Sony products, and none have lasted longer than a year and a half. Our advice is to look elsewhere.

It's nice but it won''t last long!

We purchased this tv new at Circuit City in April of 2007. In May of 2010, we started having problems with the screen display. After over $500 in repair attempts it's been diagnosed as a COMMON problem with this tv and it's the LCD screen...which costs $3000 for the parts and $300 for labor. We've found that Sony is aware of the problem but has not issued a resolution for a reasonable repair.

Good till it died

Bought this TV in November 07. Worked fine until it developed backlight problems after just two years and it had to be repaired. Sony said that the panel had to be switched out. They sent a panel but it was not the right one (right box, wrong panel, very puzzling). They sent the right panel two weeks later. Unfortunately the replacement panel is not working properly because I'm getting blurry picture caused by uneven backlighting. This happens when the TV set is initially turned on. Its almost like a fluorescent bulb which flickers and lights up after it gets hot. Except it takes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes for the TV picture to become normal. Very disconcerting. I was such a Sony fan until I bought this lemon. Thankfully the TV is under 4 year warranty with Best Buy and they will be coming again to either fix or replace the TV. In fairness to Sony though the TV (when it worked) had very good picture quality with vivid color especially hooked up to a Sony blue ray player. The speakers are ok but not surround sound quality. I got the Sony home theater to enhance the audio. The audio works great with the blu ray and other components but not with my cable TV box. The TV tech folks tell me that KDL TV models seem to be having sync problems with digital cable and sat boxes in my area. The audio keeps cutting out when you switch the audio to your home theater speakers. The audio is fine though through the TV speakers.

Bottom line with this TV though is that it seems to have backlight issues and I can only hope that Sony has taken care of this in later models. My next TV though will probably not be Sony.

Great for 3 years until it died.

I've had this TV for three years. I don't have any complaints about it. One day, it simply quit working. I called the extended warranty company, they came out, said the entire panel needs to be replaced. Now they're going to buy me out so I can buy another TV.

Very disappointing that this TV only lasted three years. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty. I normally don't buy them but back in 2007, Consumer Reports said the life of LCD's was unknown and that they are very expensive to repair. So I spent the money for one. Now I'm glad I did.

All I can say, is that this TV was perfect until it died. I was very happy with it. Mine was in a very bright room and there was no loss of color on the TV. I had lots of sunlight coming in and the picture quality was the same no matter how bright the room was. I also like that this TV does not have a piano finish. I did not want reflection off of the sides of the TV's due to all the sunlight and reflection that our family room has.

Not what I expected from a $2,400 TV, especially a branded name

Bought my KDL52W3000 from Sears on one of their sales in November 2007. $2,400 out the door seem like a pretty good deal on this TV.
It worked beautifully for about 14 months until it started to develop horizontal lines on the right side of the screen creating a ghosting image. If I turn it off for a while, the picture comes back to normal. But eventually, the problem comes back. I didn't get extended warranty cause didn't imagine that such a TV could go so bad so soon.
Pixel problems seems common for this TV based on the reviews.
I've been a big fan of Sony products especially of their tube TVs. Not any more.
I'm regretting not picking up the Samsung next to it.
My sister took a Samsung at the time and the picture seem more alive. I didn't get the Samsung because it had a glossy screen which can be bad when viewing in front of windows and such. But the glossy screen makes the contrast and black level so much better.
No more Sonys for me unless it's 50% off or better cause that's what I feel is worth.
If you're shopping for a TV, picture quality is important, but reliability is just as important because it can be very frustrating to see your money on the curb.

Good while it lasted!

you wouldn't expect a bad TV from SONY because of their history, heck I had a Sony tv my whole life and none of them every broke down on me.

but only after 2 years, this TV started developing those infamous ghost lines. After reading up on discussion boards, i realized that this was a very very common problem and was actually noticed by Sony so they had a recall.

the thing is, Sony's recall had an expiration date and ended become my tv started to act up. i actually called them and they said i have to pay for the repairs. repairs that are not my fault, that are a defect by Sony.

this is the last time i will ever buy a Sony TV.

The BRAVIA 'sweet spot'.

I picked this TV because it has great features and is reasonably priced. It's near the mid-point of the BRAVIA line, and has many of the important features of the XBR series TV's, but at a more reasonable price. The 120mhz Motion Flow technology was a big selling point.

This unit is identical to the Bravia W4100 series, except the lower portion is BLACK instead of silver.

The full specifications of this model are available on the Sony Style website under 'business' sales, and their LCD TV listings.

I bought it from J&R as they are one of the few retailers who carry this model... HIGHLY recommend it. And totally worth the price!

Customer Review :

I love this TV

This is my first wide screen TV. It was very easy to set up; even for a 64 year old guy. Connections to the cable box and DVD player were extremely easy. I highly recommend this for folks like me who are not experienced with HDMI and all of the other stuff that comes with the new digital and HD devices. From carton to viewing took less than an hour including connections. I had help from my son, but as it turns out; I could have done it alone. I recommend using help when you can get only because it is a great bonding experience; especially when everything goes right.

So far, I haven't had to refer to the instructions to use the set (after a week of regular use). I found the remote easy to figure out and kind of fun to play with. 40" inch screen is about right for our family room and a big step up from the 32" screen we had been using.

Picture quality is superb for HD TV stations. Yesterday I upgraded our Comcast cable box to HD and the difference is remarkable. I made all of the changes myself; it was a snap - unplugging and plugging in stuff - no instructions - no problems - no calls to Comcast (or to my son). So yes, as other reviewer commented you will absolutely want to upgrade your cable box if you have one. Images from TV stations on the old cable box was grainy and some of the words were difficult to read; I felt like I was going to get a headache trying to focus using the old cable box.

Extremely Pleased!!

I bought this TV at B&H Photo for $70 less than the S-series available at Walmart and V-series has a lot more features and capabilities than the S-series product. I am very pleased with the picture quality, sound and various features. I have watched a few fast-action movies have noticed no blurring as reported for other brands of 60Hz TV. I am also surprised that the digital out (optical) from TV connected to my audio receiver not only carries the digital sounds from DVD players, DirectV receiver, and rooftop antenna but also it appears that the analog sound from VCR is piped out of the optical digital output (I did not expect that at all). The 4-HDMI connections are more than plenty as I don't expect to use more than 3 at the most (using only two at this time). Picture quality for SD TV is fine but HD is superb. It has the capability to adjust the backlight intensity with the lighting in the room. Oh, the most pleasing thing...I have windows facing the TV (right behind me) and even with a bright sun, I don't see any glare on the screen (of course the shiny frame does have glare). It used to be a major problem with my old tube TV and I could not watch TV without my window shades drawn.

I love the TV guide feature for off-the-air channels (if picks up TV guide coded in the signal)...amazing. PAP/PIP work only if one of the inputs is cable/antenna...so, it is somewhat limited; but I have hardly used PAP/PIP in the two weeks of owning this TV.

There is one feature I wish it had: my 32" Vizio has a "panoramic screen" option for SD channels. The panoramic screen leaves the center of the picture unchanged but stretches the content away from the center to fill the screen. Sony 4150 does not have that feature.

I still cannot figure out why this TV (4150) is cheaper than 4100 even though 4150 has longer warranty (18 months as compare to 12 months). People say that 4100 and 4150 are "quite" the same except the warranty length...but I don't know what exactly are the differences (if any, apart from the warranty length).

Unfortunately, there is no description of 4150 model on the Sony website.

Overall, I am please to have spend $130 more than the the Phillips 42" TV I was seriously considering at Walmart. Sony V4150 has a lot more features and definitely far better picture and sound.

Excellent lcd tv

The Sony KDL-40V4150 appears to have very few differences when compared to the Sony KDL-40V4100, but it does have an extra 6 months on the manufacturer warranty. The picture is outstanding, even in a daylight bright room. In fact, the default "Vivid" picture setting is a bit too bright, but the "Standard" setting works out just right for us with no additional picture tweaks. 1080p and BluRay are simply incredible, enough said. I was a bit concerned that this is not a 120hz set, but I have not found any blurring or stuttering problems with movies or fast action sports. My old eyes may simply not be fast enough! Sound from the speakers is plenty loud and clear for an average family room, but movies are best with a surround system cranked up. I use a single very inexpensive (search Amazon) HDMI cable between the cable box and the tv, and another between BluRay and the tv. They both work great ... no cable mess behind the tv. Currently I run audio out from the tv to a basic surround system that I turn on for movies. This simple setup may get more complex when I install a new home entertainment system with its own HDMI switching and upconverting!

Only complaints ... there can be a long delay when switching channels, but most of that seems to be caused by the cable box. With a direct antenna feed the tv channels switch very quickly. Also, I can't program either the tv remote or the cable box remote to handle all necessary functions, so I find myself with a remote in each hand fairly often.

Love the TV

This was a great purchase. Easy to set up. I did have a friend help me to slip the TV into its base. Selecting the channels to watch and those not to watch (delete) was relatively easy to do. The colors are amazing and I suppose they could be even better if I took the time and effort to make them so, but they were amazing just as they were when the TV was put on the first time. The 1080 TV is something else in the sense that when I watch individual persons on shows or the news, you can see all the zits, pimples, and makeup of stars and newscasters. You could also see who's really beautiful and who's really not.

Great Picture -Don't Believe 120hz

This is a great value. The picture is superb. I own a comparable 120hz Samsung which is also great, I have got to be honest I wish I had saved the extra $150 and gotten the Samsung with 60hz the "jutter" /shaky issue is bull. There is no noticeable difference and no noticeable "jutter. Both have great pictures with blu ray videos and live action sports.Just more hype to get more $$ from consumers.

Question : How do I hook up my Dell Laptop to my Sony LCD TV?
I have a dell laptop and I would like to hook it up to my larger LCD TV, I think I need the blue cord thing that goes from my laptop to the tv for the screen (what is this thing called?) and how do I get sound to go from my laptop to go through my tv speakers? Thanks In Advanced!!

Answer:
There are many ways to hook your Laptop to a TV. First, you need to make sure your TV has the same and correct input and the laptop the correct/same output.1. S-Video - This is probably the most common method out there currently because an S-Video cable is cheap as heck and just about every TV under the sun has a S-Video port. You’ll have to make sure you laptop is equipped with this port. Remember, there are two types of S-Video cables: 4-pin and 7-pin. Most laptops and PC’s are equipped with a 7-pin port, so if your TV only has a 4-pin S-Video port, then this method will not work.2. VGA - If you have a HDTV, then you will be better off connecting using a VGA cable. It gives much better quality than S-Video and as with S-Video, the cable is very cheap. You usually won’t find a VGA port on regular TV’s though, so this option is if you have an HDTV.3. DVI - DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface with “digital” being the key word there. The digital signal will give a higher quality picture than either S-Video or VGA. Of course, your computer will need to have a DVI connection and your TV will need to be an HDTV. This cord is definitely not cheap, it ranges anywhere from $40 to $80.4. HDMI - Using HDMI will give you the best quality by far. No computers that I know of yet have HDMI ports, but you can get a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to your HDTV. HDMI is compatible with DVI.5. Scan Converter Box - This is the last method that I could think of and it involves using a scan converter box, which takes a VGA signal and converts it into S-Video or component video.Direct quote from - http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-connect-your-laptoppccomputer-to-your-tv/

Question : How much would it cost to repair the LCD panel for a Sony LCD TV?
The bottom right hand corner of my Sony LCD TV (Bravia) cracked suddenly while I was watching TV. The display was distorted from the bottom right hand corner to the top. Actually I wonder if this could be repaired afterall.

Answer:
Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. The screens are plastic because they can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.I believe mine was defective and an impact that should not have broken it did break it. Try proving THAT! But why did the inner screen break instead of the outer?Sony would have none of that and that really thrilled Best Buy.Sony quoting $2300 to fix a TV I bought for $2000. I believe you. I believe that they are subject to break easier than normal but we cannot prove it.I went and bougth a plasma yesterday.

Question : Is it safe to download a movie torrent and watch it on my Sony Bravia LCD Tv using a Sony pen drive?
The manual says it is possible, provided I use a pen drive as mentioned in the list of compatible pen drives for my tv model. But, I was just wondering since torrent files are nothing but pirated, so would my tv face any problems because of that? I know that sony equipments are pretty sensitive.

Answer:
Yes, he's right. They may be invalid format issues with the video file so you cant hear sound/see video, but there is no way it is going to harm your tv. Your tv cant tell if the avi content is pirated or not.

Question : why is my brand new Sony color LCD TV in black & White?
I just purchased a new Sony TV and after connecting to my digital cable box i turned it on and its in Black & White..does anyone know why? or how i can fix the problem?

Answer:
What is the connection you are using to hook up the cable box? If you are using the 5 RCA type connections, then make sure that you select "composite" not "component" in the TV menu for that input. You maybe would want to hook up a HDMI cable instead.
