Superb Sony HDTV and excellent networking features

We are very pleased with our Sony Bravia 40" HDTV. It arrived quickly, and has exceeded our expectations. The picture and sound quality are very good, which has been our experience with Sony products. However, Sony's new Internet-ready features make this unit one of our best electronic buys. We watch Netflix and even use it in conjunction with our HP EX495 1.5TB Mediasmart Home Server ( Black). The only downside to the latter is that videos will not stream wirelessly. This Bravia uses Sony's wireless USB adapter (Sony UWA-BR100 - Network adapter - USB - 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n -- sold separately), which works well though I wish that it could handle dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) wireless N transmission like our Tivo wireless N adapter and and all of our Apple devices. However, although we can view pictures and stream all kinds of music files, we can't do so with our video files. I know that Sony requires pretty specific formatting in order to play video files (MP4 encoded using h.264 codec and AAC audio), and I can actually use my relatively new Western Digital My Book AV DVR Expander 1 TB USB 2.0/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDBABT0010HBK-NESN (also ordered via Amazon) to play the same video files copied from my HP home server; they play well. There's nothing that I can do, though, to make this TV or my Sony Blu-ray home theater system (BDV-E570) recognize those streaming video files on my home server. I researched and confirmed that it's likely not an issue with HP or its Twonky Media DLNA software because the other files stream flawlessly. Hopefully Sony will improve this feature, although I've read posts that indicate that streaming video even via wireless N doesn't work well unless you have superb buffering technology, evidently like that used by Netflix and others. Regardless, we're still well-pleased with this Sony TV and would definitely recommend it. Sony has released a couple of updates even since we purchased our new Bravia several months ago, which have expanded the Internet-based options to include most streaming music websites and plenty of video websites as well. The only other improvement that I'd like to see is the ability to use the USB port more freely, as others have commented, because I think that it only supports Sony's wireless USB adapter at this point in terms of wireless options. As mentioned, it works well with the compatible My Book AV external drive and might even allow a USB hub (not sure about this, but I plan to test it).

List of options never ends

I couldn't be happier. Everything has worked as advertised and the quality of the unit is above average for all the junk I see these days. I wanted it for my master bedroom to mount on the wall and have as few wires and devices hanging off of it as possible. The Bluray/Dvd player works well and connecting to a network was a snap. I even streamed a video from one of my computers to it, but the streaming quality leaves a little bit to be desired. I believe that is mostly due to the infancy of the technology. The internet functions work great for what I want Youtube and netflix operate just fine.

Decent price with Built-In Blu-Ray player, bad SD-DVD playback

Got a chance to try and calibrate my neighbor's new Sony KDL-40EX40B.

Overall, it's a great "Mom & Dad" HDTV with a built-in Blu-Ray player... Why? no wires. Minimum fuss, and wire muss.

Picture was pretty good out of the box, especially when set to Cinema picture mode.

Blu-Ray movies take a minute or so to load and start playing. Downside: Blu-Ray movies stop playing when you access the video settings menu, and any calibration DVD you have playing will STOP playing, and the Sony goes to the "Television" mode when you enter the video settings... can't think of a more frustrating experience to try and idealize the Blu-Ray contrast/brightness/color/tint with a calibration disk. Impossible actually. So... you're back to using the "Mark One Eyeball" calibration, which can be very subjective to lighting, etc.

Overall, settings were:

Cinema 2
Contrast 88
Brightness 50
Color 45
Tint 0

All other settings OFF

Sound was terrible, in my opinion, but I'm also used to 5.1 surround through an A/V receiver and 10" SVS subwoofer.

The Standard Definition DVD playback was ATROCIOUS, with no apparent upscaling to 1080 AT ALL. My regular DVD movies never looked worse... lots of edge effects, pixelation... I just kept my mouth shut, so as not to make my neighbor feel bad for buying the TV. But, he'll probably love it. Better than the fuzzy "rabbit ears antenna" television he had been watching (we're in Okinawa)

High Definition Blu-Ray was great. Minimal improvement with frame rate interpolation "on". Didn't look to much like "video" with it set to AUTO.

The manual is MINIMAL, but there is an i-Manual if you have internet hooked up to the TV (didn't get a chance to try this out...will write back when he gets internet hooked up.)

The on-screen menu is the Sony PS3 "X-bar" menu, which is actually very intuitive to use... but why, oh why, does the input change when accessing the settings menu (!!!!!!!!!????????)

If your a home theater buff, stay away from this combo-TV, but it would make a nice gift for the parents or grandparents at this price point, especially for Blu-Ray DVD watching.

For a hundred dollars more, get a Samsung Plasma and a cheap, used (Sony Playstation 3) with HDMI hookup to watch movies... you will be MUCH BETTER OFF!!!!

Excellent tv for the price.

This tv has an excellent picture and looks great on the wall. The sound is good but not great but we intend to add a sound system soon so it isn't a real concern for us. The remote is quite large and programming it was a little difficult for me. I still haven't got all the features programmed i'd like but we use it with our cable remote and it works well. I would highly recommend this tv to anyone so far.

Excellent TV

Excellent TV, I got it for a great deal at Best Buy during Thanksgiving'2009 for $1599, with a PS3-120gb, PS3 game, Blue Ray movie.
I am a Sony fan, no one TV is 100% perfect. But this is surely definitely worth it. My little annoyance is with the 2 tiny keys on the remote (mute and jump), they could have made it a little bigger and easy to use. Also, it was hard to imagine that such a high price tag TV doesn't have a built-in wireless like PS3? I had to run a Ethernet cable directly from router/repeater to the TV to Internet videos working. Also, the interface is more intuitive for people who already own PSP or PS3.
Update: I noticed a newer model has the built-in wifi Sony BRAVIA NX 800 Series 52-Inch LCD TV, Black http://www.amazon.com/Sony-BRAVIA-800-52-Inch-Black/dp/B0035ER1N2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1276116303&sr=8-1

best picture quality i've seen

I've had my TV for about a year and have no problems whatsoever with it. The picture quality is simply amazing- in my opinion it definitely beats the competition and is worth the higher price.

Very Good LCD TV

We bought this TV in May. We are not a big TV watching family. However whenever we get to watch it or a DVD or BD the expereince is great. The sound system is very nice. However to improve the sound quality I hooked it up to a Sony received/amp. We had to change some factory picture settings to make it sharper and more crisp.
The controls very nice and easy to use. The net connectivity is amazing. We watch movies on Netflix and its great. Even the connectivity YouTube is also very nice. I would recommend this product from my experience so far.

Great picture.... When it is working

I had read many of the reviews here and was very excited when I purchased my 52" Sony XBR9.

The unit arrived and, initially, the picture lived up to my expectations. Not too bright, brillant colors, soft tones, etc. However, since I have had the unit I have had 3 issues...

1) Interfering with other HDMI devices. The Sony TVs are designed to be the "brains" of your home theater system - whether you want them to or not. As a result, they try to take control of the other devices in your home theater set-up via the HDMI hookup. When I first got the TV, I would turn it on, but for the first minute I was unable to adjust the volume (it was controlled by my receiver) or change the channel (Tivo) because the Sony device was trying to take charge.

After 3-4 hours on with customer support I got the issue fixed.

2) Bad Circuit Board. The next issue I had was a bad circuit board. Basically, a two inch bar of white starting showing up in the middle of the picture.

3-4 hours on with customer support, service call (I had to take time off work to have the set picked up and returned), new circuit board and I am working again.

3) Power issue. Now on my third issue which is with the power. When the set is off, there is a popping noise every 4 to 5 minutes like the set is trying to turn back on. Additionally the internal clock no longer keeps time.

2-3 more hours on with customer support and a scheduled service call.

The thing that frustrates me is the amount of time I have had to spend on the phone with customer support trying to get things fixed. The people on the phone have been helpful and have tried hard to solve the problem, but at what point should we just start over with a new unit?

Overall, I like the TV, but have not been impressed with the reliability of the unit. I regret having purchased this television and which I would have purchased another brand.

Just my humble opinion...

Warning-LCD Panel Failed just after 1 year & 4 month-Sony expect u to trash your TV-The LCD panel is made by Samsung

Here's my story, hope someone can learn from my tragic mistake. Furthermore, I just realized the LCD panel is actually made by Samsung NOT Sony. If you buy a Sony TV; why is the LCD Panel (the most important and expensive part of the TV) is made in Korea by Samsung. The picture might be good but how long will it last.....for me it only lasted 1 year and 4 months. Also If you do a simple search on Amazon you will find that Amazon does not sell Sony XBR LCD TV directly anymore since I guess they have so many complaints from their customers on the Sony LCD TV. Go ahead look and see you can find Amazon selling Sony XBR LCD TV directly...Amazon actually refer you to another brand like LG or other brands when you are looking any Sony XBR LCD TVs.....and my Full Story below:

5/9/2010- I brought the Sony XBR series TV on Amazon about 1 year and 4 months ago and now the TV have failed. The picture quality was amazing until just yesterday the picture started to degrade and now it has green clouds and rainbows all over the pictures. I just call the Sony authorize tech service from they said it will cost me $75 for the in house service since it's out of warranty. They also said that if it's the LCD panels has failed then it would cost as much as the TV itself. This is my first LCD from Sony but I have 3 other Sony TVs- 1 30" Sony CRT, 1 47" XBR rear projection and 1 65" XBR rear projection TV. All the previous Sony TVs had no problem at all and I am still using the 65" rear projection TV. What happen to Sony's quality and reliability product? I guess it went to the same place as other first rated Japanese products like Toyota. They are just too busy on cutting cost and lower their reliabilities so they can rack in the billion dollars profit. So if you like the picture quality of Sony TVs; be advice to buy their extended warranty. I wish I did because if the LCD panel failed then my LCD TV is just a big 52" black picture frame hanging on the wall. If you really, really have to get a Sony XBR LCD TV then I would recommend to get 5 years extended warranty plan for $299-it will save you a lot of frustration. And after 5 years, you will probably do a upgrade anyway.

5/11/2010 update: Today the tech came and verified that the LCD panel has gone bad after 1 year and 4 months of service. In the tech's own words-the panel is a factory defect since it should not failed after just a little over a year of service and that I should call Sony and see they will reimburse the cost of the panel. I am so disappointed on the product since I did not just buy any Sony TV but the top of the line XBR series TV. I called Sony and told them the whole story but they just told me to fax all the documents -receipt and repair cost to Sony and they will evaluate it. I will wait and see what happen - but at this point I am really disappointed and frustrated with the whole thing! :-(

Update: 5/13/2010-Just received a call from Sony "Customer Relations" today. It's official-Sony don't stand behind their products. They will not pay for the cost of their defective LCD panel since it's out of warranty (1 year) after 1 year and 4 month of service. They just lost a loyal customer. No more Sony products in my house. Sony customer relations representative even has the nerve to offer me $900 reimbursement on a $$3517.75 repair cost. That's right-I will have to pay $2617.76 to fix my $2018.88 LCD TV. So if you buy a Sony TV and you have a defective LCD panel after 1 year of use then you can just throw that TV in the trash because Sony will tell you go F yourself and trash the TV. Good luck on buying a Sony LCD TV because you going to need it-and looks like from my research, I am not the only customer that have a defect LCD panel after 1 year. In fact, the LCD panel is not even made by Sony but Samsung made in Korea. Samsung LCD Panels have notoriously for premature failure of their LCD panels. So no more Sony LCD for me or should I say Samsung LCD TV ....

    Sony KDL55HX800 TV

I bought this TV ( Sony KDL55HX800 ) at Fry's Electronic last month when they have a good promotion. It is perfect. Clear, sharp, deep black... You name it. I am really enjoyable this TV. Somebody like to buy Samsung TV, because it is cheaper. But I think Sony Company is the one that make the best TV in the world. You can pay a little bit more money than other brand, but you live in happy life. Trust me.

Excellent 2D HDTV, amazing 3D if you want it.

I've had this set for about a month now and absolutely loving it. If you are in the market for a new HDTV, you should try this set out at your local SonyStyle or B&M electronics store as a future proofed set even in the presence of so many 3D skeptics. If you like gaming, you will be pleased to see HD gaming has been taken to the next level. Just play Motor Storm 3D and you will believe.

2D is amazing, and 3D is stunning! I didn't notice ghosting when viewing native 3D content as compared to the Samsung/LG sets (where ghosting was extremely obvious). Although this is an LCD set, the 3D clarity were similar to the Panasonic plasma sets I also tried. I ended up going with this set because the glasses felt better designed.

Only negative is the limited native 3D content so far... but things should get better by this winter and early next year. Can't wait for some football on ESPN 3D.

One of the Best Edge Lit LED Panels of 2010

In a world of so many options for LED LCD TV's, I can say that this is an excellent choice. I sold my Pioneer Elite plasma due to the flicker, and was looking for a CCFL backlit LCD, but was not impressed with the selection this year (wanted CCFL backlit as I own a Samsung 46B750 LCD from 2009, and the picture is spectacular). You will often see reviews of edge lit LED's state issues with clouding or flashlighting and uneven backlighting. The HX800 has a very uniform backlight with no issues seen with other manufacturers. I would recommend, however, to purchase the panel from somewhere like Amazon with a liberal return policy because you don't want to get stuck with a panel that does have issues. For the price, this is an excellent panel with accurate colors, very good black levels and shadow detail, and excellent motion handling. Before buying this panel I had bought the LG 55LX9500 full array LED local dimming set and was disappointed with the banding and uneven backlighting. Overall, the HX800 is a great panel.

Question : What is making noises on my Sony SXRD LCD TV?
I have a Sony SXRD series KDS50A2000 rear projection lcd. Lately it has been making an occasional humming sound from the back of the TV. Has anyone else experieced this problem? if you have and the issue is resolved, please let me know so I can get the repair company to stop playing games with me.

Answer:
That is only the fan. Check the menu and see if "high altitude" is on. If so, turn it off and it should work fine

Question : Is it safe to download a movie torrent and watch it on my Sony Bravia LCD Tv using a Sony pen drive?
The manual says it is possible, provided I use a pen drive as mentioned in the list of compatible pen drives for my tv model. But, I was just wondering since torrent files are nothing but pirated, so would my tv face any problems because of that? I know that sony equipments are pretty sensitive.

Answer:
Yes, he's right. They may be invalid format issues with the video file so you cant hear sound/see video, but there is no way it is going to harm your tv. Your tv cant tell if the avi content is pirated or not.

Question : My Sony Bravia 40'' Lcd TV suddenly has a gray spot on the right side of the screen. Can this be fixed?
A gray spot a sized of a palm suddenly appeared on my sony lcd tv which annoys us while using the tv.Can this be fixed and will it be costly on my budget?

Answer:
is the problem right in the corner of your tv screen? if so, it may have developed a problem called screen bleeding where basically pixels are letting light through when they shouldnt be. Mine does it slightly and the problem is only visible on very dark scenes. The only solution really is to have the panel replaced (which would be uneconomical)I found that i could reduce the problem by adjusting the backlight, brightness and contrast levels but it will always be there. i also find that the problem is worst when the set is first turned on and gradually gets better.Put quite simply - live with it or replace the tv.

Question : which is the best LCD TV Sony or Samsung?
I need to know, which is the best LCD TV Sony or Samsung?I want to buy 46" LCD TV, and the offers for both sony and samsung is good, and I have no idea about the quality of samsung's tv. and is there any information or websites that show benchmark or LCD tv tests.

Answer:
CNET has good reviews: http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/Having said that, nothing beats the naked eye. This is purely an individual preference. I can tell you my experience: I bought a 46" Samsung because the Best Buy worker was pushing it. He told me that he has one, and he likes it better than the Sony. So, I bit. Got it home, set it up, and it looked nice. However, the net morning, when I opened the blinds, it became a giant reflective mirror. The piano gloss finish reflected sunlight and the screen itself is very reflective. You won't see these issues in any professional performance review. I couldn't stand it. Took it back and bought a Sony Bravia XBR4, and wow... the difference was indescribable. The screen is a floating glass design that does not reflect light, which is nice. The frame is also non reflective. The icing on the cake, however, was the picture quality. To my eyes, Sony destroys Samsung. No competition. The best LCD television on the market is the Sony XBR series. Right now, I think it's up to XBR9, but I heard the XBR8 uses LED backlighting, so that might be a great buy.

Question : What Sony LCD TV should I get?
Folks! I am looking at the Sony KDL40xxxx series LCD TV's. There is the V series, X and W series that I can see. Could any of you techie gurus advise me on which one to get?

Answer:
You should definately get an x series. yes it is a bit more expensive however it is the only FULL HD t.v of the lot. The others are hd ready. this means a lot more reolution. Known as 1080p rather than 720p. this will be more future proof and it will play hd and blu-ray to full potential. if you buy hd ready do you want to regret it next year when true hd is used on the ps3? if you only watch freeview then go with v or w series as full hd will not be broadcast for 5 years. a u series can be a great deal if latest tech is not essential.

No, the DM (Digital Media) port is not a USB port, but a port that can take the cable from a IPod docking cradle. Via an IPod and the DM Port, you can view digital photos, play music clips or videos. Via the USB port, you can use a flash drive to view photo files or play music clips.

Question : What are optimal audio settings for a Sony LCD TV?
What are the best audio settings you can get with a Sony LCD TV with its built-in speakers? Specifically, a Sony KDL-32L4000, it gave me sound modes; Dynamic, Standard, and Clear Voice but I can't tell the difference and all I can adjust are the Treble and Bass. I can't put a surround sound system because there's not enough space for one. Any help?
