Please don't waste your money

The Sony WEGA LCD projection TV's have a well known optical block issue that doesn't present itself immediately and in most instances not until the warranty has expired. Sony is aware of the problem and will not provide a recall. The cost to replace the optical block is approximately $1,200.00. Since Sony won't provide an honorable repair for the TV, please don't spend your hard earned money on a TV that will be unusable within 24 months like we did.

The is a known issue with this TV

I bought this TV 5 1/2 years ago. It now has a blue line and spots on the screen. It turns out that this is a known problem with Sony LCD projection TVs. There was a class action lawsuit against Sony. As a result Sony will be selling me a 55 inch LCD TV for $625. Overall I am quite happy with this deal but I have to send Sony the serial number tag to get it so there is only one exchange per TV.
BTW I was happy with the TV until the blue spots appeared.

DONT BUY THESE TVS- RIDDLED WITH PROBLEMS THEY DONT TELL YOU!!!

I purchased this exact TV only a 60 inch in 2004 and that was the beginning of my troubles. Let me tell you why simply it is not cost effective to purchase this tv even if it is FREE: Dont do it. This is why.

1. These are multiple class action law suits against Sony because all the LCDs they put out between 2003 to 2008 have bad parts, namely a big problem called the OPTICAL BLOCK. They new it and shipped them out anyway. It cost 1000 to 1500 to replace, but the kicker is all SONYs optical blocks for these TV are refurbished and subject to the same problems as the originals.

2. Blue or Green or Yellow Dots or lines begin to appear on your TV until you cant see your picture anymore. THis is what happens when the OPTICAL Block goes on these TVs. After being sued so many times, sony stopped making these rear projection TVs. Go to Google or Yahoo and search this phrase, "Blue dots on my sony lcd tv". There is more information than you want to read and all of it make me mad I purchase my tv in 2004 for 3500 bucks.

3. THey also dont tell you that every 1.5 years the picture lamp burns out and you have to replace it for a whooping 300 bucks a lamp. What a joke. I have have had to replace my 3 times. Sony says, well you watch the TV to much. The lamp is only designed to accomdate 10,000 hrs of viewing or whatever they said. But 300 bucks every 1.5 years is BS.

4. The picture sucks if you are not watching a HD Station or a movie. It is unreal how grainy and what this TV looks like when you get it home. Night and day.

DONT BUY THIS TV. DONT DO IT EVEN FOR FREE. CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF ON WEB AND SONY KNEW ALL ABOUT THESE PROBLEMS BUT COVERED THEM UP. These Tvs have so many problems the people selling their used TVs are the ones that SONY wheeled and dealed with. THey told me because they recongize their problem they would give me 50 percent off another Sony TV. NOT!!!!!

I would not sell this TV to anyone without telling them what they are getting into. Buying any sony rear projection TVs from they year 2003 to 2008 is bad news. Check out this link. Cut and paste it into your browser.

It was nice until the optical block went bad...

I got this TV in November 2004, and now 5 years later, started seeing blue dots all over the screen. I was not aware that there was an optical block issue on this model until now... Disappointing to be sure. My extended warranty has expired last year, and I didn't purchase a new one.

Just called Sony, and they would not offer any discount for a repair. I inquired about the price of the optical block (just the part, not the labor), and they quoted $562.
They did offer 4 TVs at what appears to be a good discount, so now I have 14 days to decide. Not sure what to do. Here are the TVs in case anyone is interested:
KDL-40VE5 $500
KDL-52VE5 $875
KDL-52XBR9 $1150
KDL-46W5100 $700

3LCD Chips --- The 3LCD technology at the heart of Sony's BRAVIA¿ televisions provide a bright picture, with high detail and natural color. These three key benefits are immediately apparent when viewing a BRAVIA¿ TV. You can expect to see an incredibly detailed picture with eye-popping colors. Sony uses three tiny LCD chips (0.73) with a combined resolution of over 2.76 million pixels. The light from a high output UHP lamp shines into a filtering system that splits the beam into red, green, and blue light streams. Each color goes through its own LCD chip, which passes or blocks the light. The three beams are then instantaneously recombined and sent to the projection lens. BRAVIA Engine¿ EX System --- The BRAVIA Engine¿ EX video processing system came about as a result of Sony's expertise and long heritage in bringing cutting-edge picture quality to consumer televisions. It contains intelligent picture enhancement technology that reduces unwanted digital artifacts and delivers superb clarity and detail along with vivid colors. Sony's own Digital Reality Creation Multi-function v1.0 (DRC-MFv1) processor replaces the original SD signal with its HD equivalent. The result of BRAVIA Engine EX processing? Picture quality has texture and detail, deep and vibrant colors, along with excellent depth and contrast.

lamp needs replacement in less than 3 months

We bought our Sony Bravia less than 3 months ago, and sometimes it won't turn on and the red Lamp light goes on. Apparently we need to get a new lamp (which costs $250)!
Sony sucks.

dead lamp after 80 days

Mine worked great for 80 days and now it is dead. The lamp light is on and there is no picture. 8000 hours lamp life? I figure mine was was more like 300 hours. The owners manual says contact Sony for a replacement bulb but they don't seem to have them available on the web site. They have them for similar models for $200-$300. Great.

Great TV

I have had this product for over a month and it is fabulous! I had my buddy come over and hook up this color calibrater which did a great job! its no professional calibrator but it did turn pale colors for some movies into bright and vibrant and expanded on those that already looked good! only thing i suppose is lack of 1080p. I watch alot of blu-ray and would like to see them in their full potential, but for the price it is one of the best pictures i could find!

Fantastic picture, bargin price!

I had no intentions of buying a TV - we went out looking for a Nintendo DS and some PSP games. But there it was on display promoting DirecTV. It was marked down to $799 and Time Warner would take another $100 off if we signed up for digital cable. We ended up getting the TV (KDF-37H1000) for $676 brand new in a sealed box.

The picture is fantastic, much better than my 50" Samsung DLP in the living room. I plugged in a coax splitter and hooked up my basic cable to one side and rabbit ears to the other. Within minutes the TV had scanned all available channels and locked them in. There's no need to switch between over-the-air (OTA) channels and cable, the TV does that automatically. It's bright, the picture is completely configurable and even with basic cable looks great. TWC is installing an HD box in the bedroom so we'll be able to take advantage of all the HD channels they have to offer.

All in all this is a great TV and a fantastic price. Why so cheap? Sony is getting out of the DLP business and focusing on LCD. If you see this TV for sale buy it. Replacement bulbs are $185 and last 4 years based on 8 hours of TV per day. Mine's in the bedroom so I anticipate it lasting 10 years before needing to have the bulb replaced. If they had another in stock I would have bought it for the play room.

Excellent.

I purchased the TV on clearance from Circuit City in January. It has a great picture when just hooked up normally. I have it hooked up with hdmi to digital cable and the picture is amazing. The only drawback, (which isn't really a drawback) is that it takes a little while to load (appx 10-12 seconds to see the picture, 20-25 seconds to fully load). But, trust me, it's worth the wait.

Questions & Answers
Question : i cannot get a picture when connecting my hp laptop to my sony lcd tv using a vga to hdmi cable. why is this?
i have already tried using the fn button but this makes no difference.

Answer:
I've never heard of such a cable... VGA is Analog video (PC), HDMI is Digital, there's no way a cable can convert analog video to digital video. What you need is a VGA to component (R/G/B) cable adapter, then you can take the output from your PC and display it on your LCD, (as long as it has Y/Pb/Pr connections)

Question : How do I link my laptop to my sony lcd tv?
Sony KDFE42A10 42" LCD Rear Projection TelevisionToshiba satellite laptop. Does anyone know which cable I need to connect the two together?

Ah yes.... you have the 42" version of my 70"..... Well, what kind of outputs do you have on your laptop? If you have an S-Video output on there, perfect. Now you'll just have to get an S-Video cable. Question : is it important to use exspensive scart leads on my new sony lcd tv?
is it important to use exspensive scart leads on my new sony lcd tv?

Answer:
We always have gold plated scart plugs with metal bodies (cheap ones can be metal covered plastic) and they have individually screened conductors. We have never paid more than £10 each and have found a marked difference between these and the cheaper quality ones. Considering the price, added to the fact that you don't have to replace them regularly, I can't understand anyone buying the cheap ones! Why spoil good quality equipment by using inferior quality leads and connectors?

Question : Which of the two are better LCD TV manufacturers-- Sony or Samsung?
I am looking to buy a Full HD LCD TV and I have checked out the 32 inch LCD in Sony KLV32W400 and Samsung 550 series.Which of the two brands is good. Also, I was told by the salesperson that there is not much difference in HD (780 resolution) and the Full HD (1080), when it comes to buying a TV below 37 inches. It only matters in TVs 40 inches and above.

Answer:
Personally i would go for the samsung one. I have both the sony and the samsung one and i like the samsung one just that little bit more.

Question : How much would it cost to repair the LCD panel for a Sony LCD TV?
The bottom right hand corner of my Sony LCD TV (Bravia) cracked suddenly while I was watching TV. The display was distorted from the bottom right hand corner to the top. Actually I wonder if this could be repaired afterall.

Answer:
Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. The screens are plastic because they can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.I believe mine was defective and an impact that should not have broken it did break it. Try proving THAT! But why did the inner screen break instead of the outer?Sony would have none of that and that really thrilled Best Buy.Sony quoting $2300 to fix a TV I bought for $2000. I believe you. I believe that they are subject to break easier than normal but we cannot prove it.I went and bougth a plasma yesterday.

Question : I just got a Sony Bravia LCD TV, i wanta get surround sound for it, which is the best one?
i got SONY bravia LCD TV, i wanta set up a surround sound system, maybe i should get wireless speakers so i can put them in all sides of the room? whats the best company? and what set should i get?

Answer:
There is no "best one". You really need to research specs and prices and then evaluate yourself on the basis of listening with your own ears. Whatever anybody tells you is the best will be immediately countered by somebody else's opinion......

Question : What is making noises on my Sony SXRD LCD TV?
I have a Sony SXRD series KDS50A2000 rear projection lcd. Lately it has been making an occasional humming sound from the back of the TV. Has anyone else experieced this problem? if you have and the issue is resolved, please let me know so I can get the repair company to stop playing games with me.

Answer:
That is only the fan. Check the menu and see if "high altitude" is on. If so, turn it off and it should work fine
