Sony has lost a loyal customer of 15 years

This piece of f&*cking sh#t has a blue hue on the corner and middle of the screen. This is a KNOWN ISSUE with these rear projection LCDs...not just this model, but all of Sony's rear projection LCDs. Just Google "Sony Grand Wega Blue Hue" and there'll be tons of links to others who've had this problem. The TV was purchased in 2005 for $2500.

It is a very costly repair, as this is related to the "heart of the TV."

Don't buy this TV!!!!!

Sony has known issues with this TV, and they will not permanently, correctly fix it. Once the warranty runs out, you're screwed! The projection bulbs are $200 so be prepared to replace them. The light module (LCD screen) wil also go bad. Your replacement will also go bad.

This TV is not worth owning, and re-consider buying ANY SONY TV since they knowingly sold these TVs with serious design flaws.

Lamp Housing

First of all the it was a great TV one of the best ones that I ever owned. We got the tv in June 2004 we never had a problem until the last 8 months. We went thru 3 bulbs in the last 6 months and at over 200.00 a pop it became costly. We had a service tech come to our home and we found out that we had something called and optic block. Then the tech removed the lamp housing and we found a greater problem the entire lamp housing had started to melt and was a fire hazard. With the tv out of warranty it was going to cost over $1500.00 to fix. The service tech called Sony and after 3 days Sony called and offered us KDL52S5100 Flat panel tv for $475.00 with a list price of over $1800.00 it was a deal that could not be passed up from Sony. I hope we get as many years out of this new one.

It's starting to show its age - no HDMI or ATSC tuner

We've had this TV for about 4 years now. I think I bought it in 2004. Anyway, at the time it was a good compromise, because flat screen LCD tv's were very expensive, and plasma was a crapshoot as to quality. And DLP was the big deal then. Not anymore. So, this TV's resolution is 1024 X 848. Yes, its a strange resolution, what it really means is that its a hair taller than most widescreen TV's. But its not 1080p. Also, it has NO ATSC tuner - if you want HDTV you have to buy a standalone tuner for it. I knew this when I bought it. Cable company HDTV box will also work. It has NO HDMI connections. Only 1 DVI connector, the rest are component Y/Pb/Pr connections and RCA jacks. But at the time DVI was all the rage and HDMI didnt exist.

Now, the number one expense in this set is the lightbulb. Our first one lasted about 2 1/2 years. We are still on our second bulb, which was not made by Sony and which is not as bright, but it gets the job done. I noticed that light bulbs ( they are called PL-2100U I think) are now down to about $120 - $140. Cheaper than when I bought the first replacement bulb.

Also, standard def TV doesn't look really sharp on these sets. The flat panel LCD sets now everywhere do a better job of this I think. But, I bought this set expecting it to last 10 years, and I have 5 and a half to go, and it seems to be fine. My next set will have a built in tuner and hang on the wall. I think the next revolution in content is going to come from the internet, and you will be able to stream everything from your laptop to your TV. You can do this now easily if you have HDMI. Cable networks should beware, their days of charging a lot for content are numbered, soon we'll only need them for internet and VOIP phone.

Still going strong after 6.5 years

I've had my Sony KF-50WE610 since January 2004. Original bulb, excellent picture and sound. No problems what so ever. Very happy with the value of this TV.

3 years and still going!

I started looking for a big screen TV in 2004, but they were so expensive. In 2005 while buying DVD's I wanted to stroll thru the TV's and see the new technology. That's when I came across Sony's art work. Stylish frame with the side speakers was impressive. A matte front panel to protect the screen and reduce glare (not many with this feature), good for little kids that have to touch everything! It's more affordable with the combination of projection with the sharp picture of an HD LCD. If your kids play a lot of video games (me sometimes) you don't have to worry about screen burn. HDMI connections with more than enough video ports to hook up everything - HD satellite box, receiver/amplifier, DVD, VCR, Xbox, Wii, Play Station 3. Plus Memory stick compatible to really show off the family pictures (so your old parents can see them)! ;^) As far as HD action goes - I watch Discovery HD, HD sports, HD movies action and Sci Fi with no problems. Once you go HD it's difficult to watch standard definition. Put it this way, after looking at it on the sales room floor and finding out about it's features I looked at my wife to discuss finances when she said "Go ahead and get it, I love it.". Sold!
Writing this in June 2008 with over 8300+ hrs on the lamp timer and just replaced the lamp. I found one online for $130 and how to reset the timer myself. It's an easy change out. I'm as happy with this, correction, Sony's KDF-60XS955 60 inch HD LCD Projection TV now as when I first bought it. I would rather spend a little more for a quality product and be happy than go cheap and end up cussing every time something went wrong.

Truly Amazing

This is truly an amazing television. The below reviews sum it up nicely, but I'll take this opportunity to reinforce the positive feedback. I've had a few widescreen HDTV sets, and this is clearly the best. Sony did this one very, very right.

Problem with light block engine

Light block goes bad after 2 to 3 years, Sony does nothing to help. Sony settled a class action suit on this tv but did not contact other existing customers of the problem and when the set goes bad Sony will not help.

Great TV

The TV had a great picture, but what really surprised me was the quality of sound it produces. I have a big surround sound, but even without it, the tv sounds great. It was definately worth the money at the time (Jan 05), but by now there may be better deals.

Questions & Answers
Question : I can get a good deal on a 740 37 inch Sony LCD TV. If all stations start broadcasting in 1080 will my TV ?
in 740 still look good?

Answer:
Im guessing by 740 you mean 720p? if so no worries because no one will go exclusive 1080p for a long time to come. As for a good deal on a sony, I'd save some more cash and buy something better like a Samsung

Question : Which of the two are better LCD TV manufacturers-- Sony or Samsung?
I am looking to buy a Full HD LCD TV and I have checked out the 32 inch LCD in Sony KLV32W400 and Samsung 550 series.Which of the two brands is good. Also, I was told by the salesperson that there is not much difference in HD (780 resolution) and the Full HD (1080), when it comes to buying a TV below 37 inches. It only matters in TVs 40 inches and above.

Answer:
Personally i would go for the samsung one. I have both the sony and the samsung one and i like the samsung one just that little bit more.

Question : What are optimal audio settings for a Sony LCD TV?
What are the best audio settings you can get with a Sony LCD TV with its built-in speakers? Specifically, a Sony KDL-32L4000, it gave me sound modes; Dynamic, Standard, and Clear Voice but I can't tell the difference and all I can adjust are the Treble and Bass. I can't put a surround sound system because there's not enough space for one. Any help?

Answer:
Effects you should be experiencing:Dynamic - greater difference between the quiet & loud sounds.Standard - normal volume range or slightly compressed between the quiet & loud sounds.Clear Voice - Bass and treble cut so that voice isn't too boomy or shrill.

Question : i cannot get a picture when connecting my hp laptop to my sony lcd tv using a vga to hdmi cable. why is this?
i have already tried using the fn button but this makes no difference.

Answer:
I've never heard of such a cable... VGA is Analog video (PC), HDMI is Digital, there's no way a cable can convert analog video to digital video. What you need is a VGA to component (R/G/B) cable adapter, then you can take the output from your PC and display it on your LCD, (as long as it has Y/Pb/Pr connections)

what makes your prescribed model superior to the rest of the models of Sony as well to its competitors?

If your set is rented and I had the repair call on. it would be debriefed as sco (service change over recommended) and on to next job. Sucking air through teeth ,Sorry sounds like a workshop job. Flashing led's not usually a quick job. Try where you bought it from. Best of luck

i got SONY bravia LCD TV, i wanta set up a surround sound system, maybe i should get wireless speakers so i can put them in all sides of the room? whats the best company? and what set should i get?

There is no "best one". You really need to research specs and prices and then evaluate yourself on the basis of listening with your own ears. Whatever anybody tells you is the best will be immediately countered by somebody else's opinion......

Question : how to play blu-ray dvd on sony vgnfz21m laptop thru hdmi cable to sony lcd tv hd ready?
Is it possible to overcome the block that sony have put on preventing the export of the blu-ray display from the computer. I assume they have done this to maximise sales of blu-ray players. I do not have any problem using the tv as a second monitor, it just won't take the blu-ray signal. I would be very grateful for any help with this.

Answer:
Your question doesn't make much sense. If your computer is connected to your LCD via HDMI cable then you should be good. Just extend your desktop to the second monitor. Drag Windows Media Player over to the second monitor and hit play. Anything displayed on your laptop can be moved to your second monitor.

Question : I have a sony lcd tv . How can i clean the lcd?
