great TV, great PQ, advanced internet features lacking

I've been using this TV for about 4 months now. It's a great TV with a great picture. I won't bother repeating all of the technical stats since you can see them above, but suffice it to say that this TV has all the technical bells and whistles you'd want in terms of contrast ratio, refresh rate, etc.

In general Sony makes good products (although you do sometimes have to pay a little more for them). The Z series is their mid-range series - it's better than the S, V, and some others, but doesn't have all the features of the XBR series. This TV is the 4100 series, which unfortunately makes it just one model short of being able to do a lot of cool internet enabled things. For example, the 5100 model (and everything above that, including the XBR series) can stream netflix movies. I've also tried streaming video from a DLNA server and found it somewhat limited, While JPG images can display easily and you can play MP3s, (I got that working in just a few minutes), Sony doesn't guarantee support for anything other than basic mpeg2 video format (and I've had little luck even getting that to work). Since most internet video is distributed in other formats, this means you're going to have to get another device (HTPC, Bravia internet link, Roku box, Xbox, PS3, etc.), in order to get internet video. Depending on your plans for other home theater devices and budget, you may want to upgrade to the 5100 series or XBR for the additional internet based features, however if you're like me and getting a HTPC anyway, then it doesn't make sense to spend additional money for features you'll have through other devices.

Mesmerizing!

I have owned this TV (KDL-46Z4100, silver) for 1.5 years and though I will not be able to give many technical details but for rest of the people in plain english, you cannot go wrong with this TV. Ours is hooked with our old zenith home theater system so we don't use TV audio but our surround system. In addition TV is also connected with sony blue-ray player (that we got in a combined deal while buying TV) and samsung dvd player (for international disc formats). Earlier we had cable TV with HD-DVR and our TV always looked superior to our friend's samsung class TV (don't know the model no. but its top line 52 inch thing) but we and our other friends thought its because they have dish network and no HD signals are coming but then they subscribed to HD signal and the difference was still there. And now from past one month we also have dish network and we have concluded that this is just better TV. And also the samsung dvd player that we have....our friends also have it and they have bose surround system that they use with TV and same dvd on different TV gives better result in ours.
I still remember that setting the TV was not breeze but mainly because we were trying to get sound from our old zenith system and it did not have newer option available but rest was easy we just got HDMI cables to connect everything else. I like electronics but TVs were exception but after this TV....things have changed.

LCD Greatness

I purchased this TV February 2009, and it has since been shipped from S. Korea all the way to Portugal. been probably mishandled all the way around the world as well.
The Picture is amazing, i have read some minor complaints about some "greying" on the sides, i have none of that. I love this Television.

TV speakers are TV Speakers, what do you expect, better than nothing. i am not gentle with things i own, and turn it off and on repeatedly, or leave it on for extended amounts of time. i put TV's through what Automakers put their cars through in the desert... and this TV has lived up to the challenge

i dont really know what else to say, superior quality and reliability, for me anyways

Great TV

I've owned this TV for a little under a year now, not one problem. I have my Xbox 360, PS2, Blue-Ray, Stereo, HD cable box all hooked up to it. I payed 1450 last Christmas so I would think that now it should be found for around 1000.

Sony's Bravia W series Full HD 1080p televisions take performance to the next level with advanced HDMI v1.3 features such as x.v.Color which greatly broadens the color space input capabilities to include 1.8 times as many natural colors as existing HDTV signals. In addition, Deep Color input capability works with the 10-bit processor and panel to deliver 64 times the level of color expression versus current 8-bit systems. Wrap all of this up with an elegant a new brushed metal picture frame design and there's nothing like W-Series HDTVs.

Customer Review :

Good value for the money. Great picture. Good Sound.

This is a very good television with many options for expandability. The four HDMI ports are extremely useful and made hooking up my component add ons a breeze. I attached a DISH DVR, a DVD/VCR combo, a DVD player, a Blu-Ray player, and an A/V receiver -- and it was an absolute delight to find all of them worked perfectly with the Sony. The 120hz picture makes fast action scenes a pleasure: no blur. And, the 1080p shows up as such for viewing Blu-Ray discs. There is, occasionally, visible pixeling for certain scenes -- although they are hard to describe. The sound is the one disappointment that keeps me from giving this a higher rating; to hear clearly from the television speakers, the volume must be turned up to uncomfortably high levels. Using external speakers is the only way to go with this baby. The remote control is easy to use and handles all needed actions. Setup is a breeze. This model is available at high discounts from many places. I got mine at CostCo and have not felt cheated. You will, I believe, find this model -- with most of the latest technical improvements (alas, it does not have 240hz refresh)-- to be good value for the money. My only regret is not getting the 52 inch model; it, however, is overpriced in my opinion.

Excellent, still very happy a year and a half later

I thought I would write a review now even though I bought the TV on black Friday 2008, a year and a half ago. I think it may be of interest to others to know how I feel about this Sony KDL-46WL140 LCD TV after long term usage.
In one word, EXCELLENT, 100% positive. In the time I have owned it, this LCD TV set has given me many hours of most enjoyable experience, with a variety of programs including live sport on cable HD programming (NBA, tennis, soccer, football mostly) to Blu-Ray movies (latest one was Avatar, which looks absolutely stunning on this set) to video games. I have never come across a situation where I could fault the Bravia for anything. My children play games (I don't) on the Wii and the XBox 360, and they appreciate the very fast refresh and absence of blur, judder or ghosting.
My only not completely positive comments go to the zoom feature when viewing non-HD cable TV programming. The zoom pre-sets do not always allow to adjust the picture size the way I would like, when viewing non-HD programming (programs that do not come natively in the 16:9 aspect ratio of the screen). When viewing HD programming, it is perfect without needing adjustment of course. Please note that this issue is not unique to the Bravia, I have not found one TV that gave me the type of flexibility I wanted for regular (old style NTSC TV programs), so do not use that comment as an excuse for not getting this set.
Also, the sound could use a little more bass, but there again, most TV's built-in speakers have the same issue, they are simply too small for good bass. Other than the lack of deep bass, the speakers sound really good and natural. I do not agree with another reviewer's comment that the sound has to be cranked up. Most of the time, my sound level is set around 30, I never had to go above 50 (out of 100 full scale). The TV has 22W real watts of audio power and that is plenty in my very large living room.
I like being able to rename the inputs to something more useful than the defaults, but you can only choose from a relatively wide selection of presets (such as "Game", "BD", "Cable box" and such), you cannot not make up your own names.
I like also being able to control the TV from the Sony BD player's remote (a Sony BDP-BX1). However, the TV remote does not control the BD player, even though it has buttons intended for that purpose. The remote is not a universal type.
The TV has plenty of inputs and works extremely well as a monitor for my laptop, which I use to watch Hulu or other video programming, and occasionally for web browsing.
Finally, this TV looks good even when turned off. It has great style.
I know today you can buy TCD TVs that are thinner, but this one is fine as it is (4.5"), and a thinner TV is likely to have even less bass because there will be less space for the speakers, so before you fall for the "thinner is better" sales pitch, make sure you need it.
In summary, if I had to buy a 46" LCD TV again, I would definitely get it again. You can get a refurbished one for about $800 and that's a terrific deal in my opinion.

great value for the price

I purchased this tv at Sam's club on black Friday and couldn't be happier. The price was 1348.00. The tv came with internet hardware which I still haven't connected, I bought it to watch tv not some goof on u-tube. The menu on the tv is very simple to use and takes no time at all to start watching your favorite shows in HD. The picture is great along with very good sound. If you find one buy one.

Bravo to Bravia

For the last six weeks, we have enjoyed having Sony's Bravia KDL-46WL140 W series Full HD 1080p HDTV grace the wall of the family room, a spot previously hidden by a large wooden media cabinet that contained a 37" JVC CRT TV. The contrast in clarity and sharpness between the two TVs is amazing, and the Sony's crystal clear picture on HD TV shows just how much technology has changed in just nine years.

Before buying this model, I was looking for a flat screen with plenty of HDMI inputs (not that we need them now, but in three years, who knows?), a TV that itself was not ugly or overstated (didn't want any touches of red or other colors as I was not buying a car), and a TV that would make me stop and stare at the picture. A bit of research preceded my expedition to find the right TV (we were saving change for quite some time), and this model was the one I kept coming back to at the large consumer club where I bought it. The other TVs, all getting their feed from the same in-store source and all subject to the same harsh overhead lighting, all paled in comparison. (Plus, this was the last one in the store, showing that I was not alone in my opinion.)

We installed this 46 inch on a Sanus rack, and actually our measuring was the most time-consuming part of the installation. The set up menus were easy to follow, and the we had the TV up and running in about 30 minutes. We have tried out some of the options, and after some initial tweaking in the deeper levels of the menus, have not tended to leave the settings as is. I suspect once we add a blu-ray DVD player, we will need to reexamine the options.

It took a bit longer for me to figure out all the inputs and get the surround sound working through my older non-HDMI receiver, but I agree with others, that the TV's sound is a bit anemic, and the added muscle from surround sound really enhances movies and concerts.

Guests have all commented on the quality of the picture and the size of the 46 inch screen. For us, this is plenty of TV, and we should be "future proof" for a few years yet. I have not yet hooked up the Internet component (though it is installed) but plan to run an ethernet cable directly from a router to the TV in the next few weeks.

Sony's Bravia KDL-46WL140 W series Full HD 1080p HDTV

We've only had this for a few days, but couldn't be more happy about our purchase. We upgraded from a 32" Westinghouse, and the picture improvement is beyond words. Watching blu-ray had almost a 3D effect given vivid mode, 1080P, 120Hz, and our Playstation 3 which supports the 24P mode.

Have watched in direct sunlight and darkened room, with no issues on visibility of the screen. I don't have the sound issues others have stated, but I only use the TV sound for the Internet broadcasts (have regular sound going through an Onkyo receiver).

We attached the included Internet device not expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised by the various internet "channels" available. Tested the HD download from Amazon (an Ironman trailer) and it looked great. We have 15mbps FIOS, so thoughput doesn't appear to have any issues.

Other channels beyond Amazon's video download (which you can link with your Bravia account for easy purchase) are CBS (with most of their TV lineups available), SI, a trailer channel, and many others (about 20 in all upon its initial search. I haven't experimented with adding anything yet, as I'm curious how hulu will work with this.

Overall, a great TV at a great price from Costco. A 2 year warranty tops off the package well.

Sony makes a difference

I live in a rural area, and could not get any store to deliver a television to me. Even delivery companies would not deliver a television in particular. Amazon came through with shining colors. The delivery was prompt - understand that the delivery company will CALL by telephone for an appointment. I waited for an email for longer than I had to prior to checking my phone messages, whereupon I found the Television waiting to be delivered. The service was very good, if not "white glove." The delivery man offered to help me take the television inside, which was nice - but he's certainly wasn't familiar with the television set, and so I didn't want him to hook it up.

The television arrived in in perfect shape, and performs spectacularly.

Why this set is special:

- Picture quality is superior coming from this television's image processing software.

- Exterior of the television is matte black, not reflective lacquer like Samsung and Sharp. That reflection is distracting from the picture.

Looking at this sony as well as a Sharp and Samsung that had better specs on paper (higher resolution), this television's picture quality was superior. The Sony has better image processing software/hardware built in so that it "cleans up" standard input signals AND cleans up compressed mpeg image quality (from less-than-perfect DVD's). That really made the difference in my purchasing decision. The numbers alone don't tell the whole story. When researching HD Televisions, be sure you check the type of input and ensure that the settings on the television are calibrated to that input. This is where Sony really excels.

Another commenter mentioned that standard DVD's looked better after purchasing an "upconverting" DVD player. This is very key. The one that I have found to be close to perfect is made by Oppo :
OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player

The connection by HDMI is also key. A lovely signal transmitting through a mediocre line is wasted.

Still, as with any HD television, the connection between the two machines must be made carefully. When I changed the output of the DVD player from 480p (standard DVD) to 720p, the image quality improved RADICALLY. - Then I looked to ensure that "noise filtering" was off (default setting is "low" ) - and once turned off (no need to filter a gorgeous signal)... the picture is flawless - well as close to that as I need. The good news is that one can save settings for a particular input. So that once you set your settings for the DVD player, you aren't required to adjust them again. Though, DVD's vary and changing settings accordingly may do some good.

The control menus are easy to navigate, and after a few minutes of figuring, one will be very comfortable trying this setting or that.

Overall, the television and the delivery were both superlative.

I couldn't be happier.

Afterall, Sony is the best for a reason

We love this TV. I bought a Sony rear projection 60" for my family room about 4 years ago and have never regretted it. So naturally when it came time to buy a big one for the bedroom, we upgraded in technology and stuck with Sony. When you're spending this much on a TV, pay a little more for the best. I research all my high ticket purchases so I expected the quality to be as good as it is. We don't have it hooked up to surround side or an HD box and you'd never know it. The picture is crystal clear. We've had the tv for about a year and no complaints yet. We feel like we're at the movies when we lay in bed.

It is also very light and thin. I am a 125 pound woman and I can lift it myself. Perfect if you have the wall space but don't want to take up too much room.

Great TV, poor service

TV: Since this TV replaced a Sony XBR with 1080i resolution, the picture quality we see is only slightly better. Also, I have not noticed the clouding problem that many other buyers of other S series models had problem with.

Good:
- very good HD pictures
- color & brightness when using HDMI input
- sound quality is much better, could be due to HDMI

Bad:
- the response (switching between inputs, volume change) is way too slow, even compared to a much cheaper brand LCD we have.
- there is no way to skip the coax cable input which we don't use.
- no picture in picture (I knew this before buying)

Delivery: very bad experience
The delivery was late and it cannot be considered "white glove" because all the delivery guys offered to do is to hook up the TV at the nearest outlet in my living room to prove that it was not dead. Secondly, it took over a week (half dozen email/calls) to get Amazon to agree to their policy (that because of the late delivery, return shipping should be paid by Amazon), which also meant that I could not refuse the shipment and ultimately hooked it up while getting this resolved. Oh yes, they offered a $15 coupon and are yet to respond to my final comments on this experience after four days.

Great LCD TV for Great Price! Go SONY Bravia!

This was by far the BEST Picture on the Showroom Floor and got it for $1200 clearance at BestBuy! When I got home I thought that the Picture would suffer as I only have a Standard Antenna to pick up local Stations. However, I was amazed at the picture and brought in my Nieghbor whom works for verizon on the Fiber Optics line. he stated that there is no better image engine then what the Sony Bravia Creates.

Question : What Sony LCD TV should I get?
Folks! I am looking at the Sony KDL40xxxx series LCD TV's. There is the V series, X and W series that I can see. Could any of you techie gurus advise me on which one to get?

Answer:
You should definately get an x series. yes it is a bit more expensive however it is the only FULL HD t.v of the lot. The others are hd ready. this means a lot more reolution. Known as 1080p rather than 720p. this will be more future proof and it will play hd and blu-ray to full potential. if you buy hd ready do you want to regret it next year when true hd is used on the ps3? if you only watch freeview then go with v or w series as full hd will not be broadcast for 5 years. a u series can be a great deal if latest tech is not essential.

Question : how do i use 32" sony bravia lcd tv as my computer monitor?
Hi...i wanna get the 32" sony bravia lcd tv to use as monitor for my computer. What cables do i need to buy for that? Is the quality gonna be as same as using the regular computer monitors? Or is everything going to be pixelated? Can i watch videos from youtuves in fullscreen wihout compromising the quality? Any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks!

Answer:
Keep in mind most YouTube videos look pixilated even on regular small computer monitors. If the quality of the video is bad to begin with, it won't look good on an HDTV either.Anyway, the 32" Bravia LCD does make a nice computer monitor. As Rodger says, use a DVI-to-HDMI cable to connect your computer to it if your computer has DVI ports.I'm using my computer on a 52" Bravia LCD HDTV myself. The DVI-to-HDMI cable works very nicely in my setup.

Question : Is it safe to download a movie torrent and watch it on my Sony Bravia LCD Tv using a Sony pen drive?
The manual says it is possible, provided I use a pen drive as mentioned in the list of compatible pen drives for my tv model. But, I was just wondering since torrent files are nothing but pirated, so would my tv face any problems because of that? I know that sony equipments are pretty sensitive.

Answer:
Yes, he's right. They may be invalid format issues with the video file so you cant hear sound/see video, but there is no way it is going to harm your tv. Your tv cant tell if the avi content is pirated or not.

Question : My Sony LCD TV just displays solid pink after a brief power interruption. Any ideas?
I still get audio for every channel AND the TV displays menus and channel identifications, just not the actual video from the channels themselves. Furthermore, I’ve tested with another television and confirmed that this is not a cable line issue (everything works fine on the other TV).Anything you know will be very much appreciated!Oh, it’s a Sony MFM-HT205 if that helps.

Answer:
I would try unplugging the tv for about 5 minutes and let it reset to the factory default and plug it back in. If it is still the same. Try calling or emailing Sony. They will probably just tell you to take it to an authorized repair facility to be checked out. There customer service support center is not very helpful most of the time. You might have to replace your tv, due to the price of labor being so expensive nowadays. Hope this will help you out.
