Customer Review :
If you already have your health, a love of your life, education & travel experience, this HDTV should be next on your list.
After reading many reviews, talking to people, and viewing the product in store, I decided on the 52" Toshiba Regza 52XV54OU. I bought it primarily for movies and gaming - but will order the HDTV service within the week after choking down the $570 cost of the PVR. Before I hooked up even regular cable service to the TV, I attempted to see what an Xbox 360 game looked like. I have an original Xbox 360, so no HDMI, but I was using the VGA adapter. Hooking the game system up to the PC proved to be slightly problematic as I had the X360 set to the highest resolution. For some reason the TV couldn't accept it at the resolution - discovered that thanks to the internet! - so I had to hook up my PC monitor back to the X360 to change the resolution to the 2nd last highest setting. Note, you'll also have to turn on the "PC input" in the settings on the TV and set the TV to be on the PC setting via INPUT on the remote. Even thought it wasn't 1080p, the game looked out of this world fantastic. We watched Iron Man on the X360 and it was fantastic. I was all set to buy a PS3 for the BlueRay DVD (and for gaming) today, but after seeing how impressive a regular DVD looks on this bad boy, I decided to keep my money in my pocket a little longer.
Regular cable TV looks excellent on this set, better than most in my opinion, although the HDTV is jaw-dropping having seen it at the store. While I was at an electronics store, I happened to walk by a display which included a 46" Regza, surrounded by some Sharp, Sony and Samsung product. The folks standing around were admiring the picture of the Regza which was definitely sharper and superior to its peers. I think they walked out with one.
Haven't seen a need to try the Gaming Mode which decreases the time it takes for the button input on the controller to register with the onscreen movement.
Setup was incredibly easy and intuitive. Everything is labeled clearly and the onscreen menus are easy to navigate and understand. The TV takes awhile to turn on, but after reading the manual I realized it's because the TV is set to Power Saver Mode.
The TV speakers are functional and not bad at all, but if you're going this big you have to with some quality home theater speakers, natch.
I could not be happier with this TV. It's so big and vivid that it makes my wife ill - which is almost a bizarre selling feature. My son was playing Spider-Man Web of Shadows and I took to the skies and as I fell towards the streets of New York, I got butterflies in my stomach. That hasn't happened before.
There is literally no point in going to the theater anymore and paying big bucks to take the family as we've now got the best seats in the house and there's never a line up.

Best Deal for 120 hz TV
I've been looking at buying a 52 LCD for 6 months. Wanted a Toshiba lx177 from last year but decided to wait for further change in technology. Looked at last years Samsung 71's and Sony xbr4's and all had issues. I waited for the 52xv540 because the quality was there for the right price. This tv looked great out of the box and has dazzled my Sony owning nieghbors who paid more than a $1000 more for thier tv's. Bluray & ps3 are incredible and if you like the motion technology on these high end tv's, you'll love Toshibas version of it. It's less intrusive than Samsungs & Sony's version but still it's evident and gives the picture a 3D look. Your HD channels will really shine. SD tv looks pretty good but your not buying this tv to look at analog channels, right? If your looking at this tv or the thin bezel version xf550, then you'll want to compare it to the new Samsung 650's and the new Sony w series. Take a look at those and price compare, read some forums and I think you'll love this tv as much as I do! I saved over $800 by buying online!

at it's price range near the top in features
This tv is the best at it's PRICE range for a 52" lcd tv. At this price range you want to consider this tv and a sony z series. I will elaborate on the reason why in this review. It's got a great picture but it's not as sharp as the sony z series which costs the same amount for a smaller 46" generally. The toshiba does have a slightly better picture than the new sony 52" w series of the same size which is around the same price. However the toshiba does support deep color and 5:5 pulldown which is the same thing as 24 p or film speed or 24 frames per second. this is a important new technology that samsung forgot to include on their new lcd series. Many blu ray players output blu rays at 24p if your tv can take the signal. When this happens the movie looks like it did in the movie theater with smooth motion. The same sized sony w series does this also but isn't as sharp picture wise as this tv but and it lacks deep color which this tv has. Anyways if you have a blu ray player or ps3 you want a tv that can intake 24p or 5:5 pulldown. (these are the same thing). the toshiba does this and gives you deep color and the w series of sony of the same size just gives you 24p. You get more picture size for a little more money with this toshiba than the z series. But you don't get x.v. color which helps expand the color. the sony z series and above do this function. the new sony xbr6 will have 24p, deep color, and x.v. color too and will be the same size as this tv but will run you alot more. Of course you DON'T want any lcd that can't do 120hz and most NEW lcd tv's do that. At this price range for this size of tv , toshiba is the best bet. If you want a sharper picture though you will have to drop down to the z series which is only a 46" or xbr5 which is more expensive. Why am I going on about x.v. color , deep color, and 24p (5:5 pulldown)?, because these are the standards that will carry us into the far future. deep color and x.v. color allow the tv to accept more color and show more color. if they offer tv's with greater than 1080p this is LESS important because nothing will be set to output at that anyway. so it's not that important. but having a lcd tv that can do 120 hz, is a good thing, greater hz(240) lcds will come in the next few years probably, but you will have a good enough tv to be satisfied with a 120 hz tv. for many , many , years to come. and this tv is good enough to be happy with for at least five years conservatively. It has the 24p (5:5 pulldown)amd deep color and a large screen. It doesn't have the x.v. color but to get it at this price you must find a smaller z series from sony. Many representitives at stores have not been informed on these new standards , which you will want far into the future. But if you have blu ray you NEED a tv that does 24p (5:5 pulldown). why spend money on a LARGER 42' and above lcd without this feature? So it comes down to it at this price range, a smaller z series with all the new standards or this great tv with two of the new standards. But whatever you get you want the 24p standard. this has it, sadly the samsung lcd ranges and many others don't. If you can't live without a 52 inch then this a good buy also. but if you want the best picture (at this price range) out there right now you would go with a z series. These are the new 2008 models of course that this review has been comparing. This is a long review but few salesmen are telling their customers about the new standards at all. And you do get two of them on this tv so that makes this a better buy than alot of other tv's at this price. At this price range I would suggest you look at this in a showroom, the picture quality is great , the z series is clearer though but smaller for the same price range. So far the models on showrooms here show no defects or purple blotches. Some lcds get those defects in early runs. So that is more good news. All in all , this is a fine tv with a great picture and good blacks, it has a good processor too so it is a better buy than the sony w series of the same size. And it's not as great a tv as the sony z series but it is bigger. Many go for the samsungs at this size but they shortchanged their customers by leaving off 24p film speed and deep color. So skip them and think toshiba or sony lcd and then compare.

Very Pleased!
Thumbs Up on this Toshiba 52" LCD.. I pondered this purchase for a while, but finally committed at great price directly through Amazon. I picked this Toshiba over the Samsung and competing sets due to the semi-matte screen, rather than a more reflective surface, as my room has a bunch of reflected light issues. I am happy that I made this choice. The delivery went perfectly, and the set was delivered and unpacked by the crew with care. After installation I have been totally pleased and content with the video quality. I really cannot comment on the built in sound and tuner since I have an external home theater set-up, but the visual performance of this unit is stunning, with no flaws.

Great TV & delivery
I ordered this TV with a lot of trepidation. Not because of the TV, because I had looked at it at a local Fry's Electronics and new it was a good-looking TV. I wanted to save money since Amazon was cheaper and I wouldn't have to pay sales tax, but I was leery of ordering such a big ticket item online.
Fortunately, my fears were unwarranted. The white glove delivery service was excellent. They brought the TV into my apartment, unboxed it and placed it on my TV stand. The delivery men then waited, somewhat patiently (but were still in a hurry), while I plugged in the HDMI cable from the cable box and checked the set for any sign of dead pixels or screen damage.
So far, the TV has been great. I wish it had slightly less reflections on the screen, but it's at least a matte screen, so they aren't bad. And really I only see them when the TV is off or on really dark screen sections. I think some curtains in the living room will clear them up.
I've only had it less than a week so far, so I haven't done everything with it, but I've watched some standard def DVDs, standard def TV, and HDTV. The standard def TV is good, but it's not what you buy this TV for. The HDTV channels are AMAZING. DVDs look great, too (playing through my PS3, which is upconverting). I can't wait to get Iron Man as my first Blu-ray disc and check it out.

PLEASE DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT
Please save yourself from buying this TV, I bought one a year ago and I have been trying to fix it about 4 months ago, poor suport from Toshiba and from all the part suppliers that they have, I just dont know what else to do with this piece of junk. If you want to keep your money save try other options like Sony or Samsung, good suport and good products from them.

Most bang for your buck
I've had this TV since May 08' and I've been very impressed. I use it for everything: TV, Blu-Ray Movies, Games, extended computer screen, etc... Only thing better would be 120Hz, but I've compared it to those screens and see very little difference. The colors are bright, the picture is sharp, and Toshiba is a great name in home electronics. What's even better is the weight, this TV is only 50 lbs! This is the best TV I've ever owned and I will definitely be looking at Toshiba TV's when upgrading in the future.

Awesome picture!
The tv was rated one of the top 42' LCD's on consumer reports and it is definitely living up to that! As for sound we have a surround sound system so we can't say much about the tv sound. If you can get this tv for under 1K I say go for it! Very easy to set up and all you need is a digital receiver to get the channels which is only $1 more a month than the regular receiver.

Not as good as a Samsung or a Sony, but better than the rest.
This review probably doesn't matter anymore since 42RV530U is not sold any longer.
Pros - Great picture, lots of connections (4 HDMI, 1 component, 1 optical digital audio, 1 VGA, etc), easy to operate, menus are good and easily customizable. I bought it for $1049 ($1199 - 150 discount) and at that time it was a great price. The sound is also very good for a TV speaker.
Cons - Ever since I bought this TV (more than a year before) there has been a small white light bleeding from the top right corner of the screen. This is not very visible when you watch programs during the day, but during night, especially where there is a lot of black on the screen or during a dark scene it is very irritating. I never bothered to send it back to Toshiba or to take it back to Circuit City.

Purchase an extended warranty with this TV
I purchased this TV on August 1, 2007. A year later, the TV would not always power on. The instructions advise resetting the TV by holding the on/off button down for five seconds. This generally took care of the problem. Last week, the TV would not power on at all and would not reset. Repairs to the TV are $484, over 75% of the cost of the TV. Like others who have written about this TV, the TV has a faulty power board, apparently a problem with this TV. If you purchase this TV, you should also purchase an extended warranty.

Recommended (with a caveat)
I purchased this TV for use in my home office, since I tend to watch most movies in that room. When the TV arrived, it did not work out of the box. I had no problems in reaching a person at Toshiba's help line, but I quickly found out that I could not return it for a new TV, which was incredibly frustrating. Instead, I had to register the TV, then take it to a Toshiba authorized service center for repair. Because this happened just before the Christmas season, the length of time for the repair was a little longer than it would've been otherwise. (A seasonal thing, obviously, so I can't fault anyone for that.) The gentleman at the repairshop was able to diagnose the problem right away, but indicated that the part had to be ordered. Basically, the TV would turn on, and I could get audio, but no video. I also was not able to access any of the TV's menus, obviously, because of the video problem.
It's a great TV, and has worked absolutely wonderfully since the day I got it back from the repair shop. I still recommend the TV, despite the problem I had with it, but I would suggest not purchasing high ticket items like this online. You might pay a little more getting a TV from a big box store, but you at least know that if it doesn't work out of the box, you can return it and get a new one in exchange on the same day and not suffer the hassles I had to.
Otherwise, I very much recommend this TV if you have need for one in a small room.

"Customer Service" at Toshiba is an Oxymoron
Enjoyed this TV for 9 months, when it began powering itself on and off. It then began turning itself off every 10 minutes. One-year warranty provided for home servicing, but Toshiba said I lived too far away from repair center but they will pick up & return the set. Not a problem. After 2 weeks, learned that 1 part was not in stock. After 2 more weeks, Toshiba finally sent a powerboard. It was defective. They sent a 2nd one -- it too was defective, according to authorized service center. Toshiba rep actually giggled when I asked about a loaner or replacement TV. It will be TWO MONTHS on 7/28/08, with several more attempts to install parts that do not fix this TV.
One day after the above appeared on Amazon, my TV was returned, with 4 new (3 major) parts installed, & it still works 2 days later. It sure was a hassle, so I still wouldn't recommend Toshiba.

Loving this lil TV so far..
The picture at 720p is excellent. Hands down.
The sound could be a lil better- but it can fill a small room quite nicely (I'ts in my bedroom)
Looks great hooked up to Any video gaming system.
Only con is I wish it was a little flatter and I'd like some "master" buttons on the unit just in case you lose that remote.

Died after 18 months
It was a great TV until the screen failed 18 months after we bought it. Just a big black blob in the middle of the screen, with the picture brightening slightly toward the edges. Why do TVs have such short lifetimes these days?

very good for its price but ....
Some problem over hdmi: you must switch the tv on only after your device has been activated or you may get the fuzzy-snow-screen.
It has *only* two hdmi(s).
Audio is good and so is the picture. 1080i format is available. It's one the best money-worth hd TV on the market.

Never again!
I've bought Toshiba for years and have never had a problem. I have a Toshiba Television in every bedroom, my den and my living room but this is the last Toshiba I'll ever buy. Pro: when it works it has a beautiful picture. Cons: It hardly ever works. I have to turn the set on and off multiple times to get it to come on and at times it just goes blank. The sound goes off for no reason and you have to turn it off and then back on for the sound to return. I looked on the net to see if anyone else had the same problem and found I was far from alone. Why Toshiba hasn't recalled this set is beyond me. Bye Bye Toshiba!

Customer Service???
TV purchased in May. I was pretty happy with the picture for the relatively low price of the TV. TV has some limitations in picture quality that you would expect when you have a bargain price. Picture went out in October. Six weeks later find out the the part for repair will not be available till March 2009. Not a good sign! Still waiting for Toshiba to resolve the issue.

Never buying Toshiba again
I've had this TV for over a year and I'm not happy with it. Out of the box the picture and sound were both good, just what you would expect for the money. After some time however you discover a particular problem. What I've learned from tech forums since purchasing mine is that many owners of this model are experiencing the same problem. Often when you turn the TV on after it's been off for a while you will get sound but no picture. So you turn it off, count to three, then turn it on and hope you get a picture this time. I usually don't have repeat this routine more than twice. Usually, anyway. Many people on the tech forums for Toshiba reported having to do this many times. Worse yet they have gone through the whole song and dance routine with Toshiba's support and the long and short of it is this: Toshiba is aware of the problem, Toshiba doesn't have a solution for the problem, Toshiba doesn't care. It would help if this TV did what a lot of others do and made a beeping sound when turned on. It takes a few seconds for every flat screen to get the video going. For this Toshiba that would be a particularly convenient feature since you don't know once you turn it on if you are going to get a picture at all. But you at least don't want to second guess yourself as to whether or not you turned the thing on successfully while you wait. Secondly when you feed video to the TV from a PC through the PC-in connector, the upper right hand corner of the screen is frequently distorted - a problem I've since been able to attribute solely to the TV and not any PC. So now I just wonder when I'll switch this on and never get a picture again, while I wish I could go back in time and buy the Sony Bravia. You pay more for Sony but you can seldom go wrong with one.

Question : is this toshiba lcd tv i bought rubbish?
i recently bought my first lcd tv, a 32" toshiba...i dont really have anything to compare it to, except a CRT but to be honest the picture looks very pixelated/blurry when up close to the screen, especially any writing. from a distance it is ok. i thought it might be the feed but sky, freeview and dvd's look the same. i would have thought a dvd should be crystal clear. am i expecting to much or is this tv rubbish. the model is : Toshiba Regza 32AV615DB 32-inch Widescreen HD Ready
Answer:
HD signals should look nice and clear. Standard def signals may actually look worse on a digital TV compared to an analog TV. This is because a standard def digital picture is made up of only 480 horizontal lines. Your HDTV has either 720 or 1080 horizontal lines, so a standard def picture has to be increased to about double its original size.Bottom line: HDTVs are intended for HD signals.

Question : Problem using toshiba lcd tv as PC monitor?
Ok I can usually fix anything on a computer but this problem has me stumped after 3 hours of troubleshooting.I have a Nivida Geforce 8400 video card in my PC running windows XP SP3. The PC works fine on my other monitor boots up fine. Well I got a Toshiba 20HL85 model LCD TV screen. I think that model is discontinued on the website but I got it probably 2 or 3 years ago.I put the LCD TV in PC mode, pluged in the VGA cable from my PC/Video card to the LCD TV. Here's the strange problem. My computer boot up and start up shows up on the LCD TV and everything seems fine. After the normal Windows XP loading bar with black background for about 20 to 30 seconds the LCD TV just goes black as if nothing is pluged in with a "PC" in the lower right corner denoting it's on the PC video setting (basically as if I unplugged it).I've plugged it back into my other monitor and fooled around with the resolutions and acceleration settings. I've checked and fooled around with my video card driver and it's settings. Nothing.I consulted the LCD TV manual and there's nothing with this issue in it.I can't find any drivers that I need.Is there anyone who has heard of this issue or knows what to check that I missed? This is the key thing....After windows boots, the LCD TV goes blank and stays there as if nothing is plugged into it when it is powered on.I have A+ cert and have been fixing computers since I was 12 so I'm not a newb at this stuff. My guess is that it's the video card because I was able to get into safe mode and use safe mode on the LCD TVso far only safe mode and VGA mode works on the LCD TV but goes blank after normal boot up.I've tried it with refresh rate at 60hz as well... no luck.
Answer:
Simple. Your Windows is set to run at a resolution too high for your LCD TV to handle. When an LCD TV encounters a resolution too high for it to display, it displays nothing. That is why it works in safe mode and you can see the bootup screens, when the video signal from your PC is still at a lower resolution your LCD TV can display. Once it boots into normal-mode Windows, it uses the resolution you set it at, which is too high and refuses to work. You need to re-connect your PC to the last monitor that worked, drop the resolution down to something lower, then reconnect your TV.Oh, and you really should be using a DVI-to-HDMI cable instead of VGA.

From channel 30 and up it gets so fuzzy some more than others. It's 7 month's old. On ch 50 & 51 it sometimes gets frozen and most turn off to get it to work. Bad tuner...get it to your nearest Toshiba Authorized service center, and bring your purchase reciept so they can copy it, to get Warranty Repair on your TV set.

Question : My new Toshiba LCD TV keeps switching it self on and off?
We got a new Toshiba LCD TV, about a week ago now and it's starting to keep turning itself off and then turning it self on about every hour or so, we ignored it but it's starting to get really annoying when watching a movie or playing on the PS3. We've try'd unplugging it for 4 hours and plugging it back in but still it keeps turning off, it turns off for about 3 seconds and turns back on.Help?
Answer:
Both answers posted before me are correct, but that's only half of it. if the sleep timer isn't the problem then the tv may be suffering a power issue. the TVs internal power switch may be going haywire.
